I'm so glad gaf dropped smileys, so obnoxious.

Encourage them to?

We might be heading to where we all choose our own names.

You think some of us identify more with the name we choose than the name we're given?

Hmm? Are you suggesting that people might want or should name themselves IRL? Or something like that.

I wonder, am i [given name], Woorloog/Empyrus (gamertag) or someone else? I am me, that's for sure but what is my true name? What/who am i?
Eh, forgive me, i'm on philosophical mood. Revelation that the universe might be a hologram does that.

Is "xXx" some kind of group, or just a standard thing to put around your name when the one you wanted is already taken?

Because I feel like we have a lot of xXx handles around here.

I don't know how it is for everyone else but my name is simply a joke.

three x's can stand for straight edge though!

Not a good idea. After posting my opinions criticising Sony for retroactively removing features from their consoles/demanding the IP addresses of anyone and everyone who dared to watch a video regarding homebrew that the corporation disagreed with, I faced a number of attempts over a prolonged period to access my account from all over the world. I eventually figured out there was a significant chance it was some disgruntled Sony enthusiasts that had created a fake password for me on a dodgy site claiming that my login details were "IloveGeoHOT" (an opinion I don't even hold) or something of that nature. The password sharing site itself is mentioned in that linked thread.

For weeks on end, my account was being repeatedly temporarily locked due to failed log in attempts, because I was vocal in my disagreement with the way "their" Sony had handled the homebrew situation.

I know I ruffled some feathers in my defense of consumer rights against Sony in those threads, but was very relieved that the enthusiasts didn't have my real-life information to target, frankly. Would it have helped if I said I actually love my PS3?

jesus

Wouldn't mind if people called me by my first name, I actually used to put a variation of my name when I made accounts before I came up with "Kisaya."

Would I display my full name though? No. My last name is pretty uncommon (and I hate it).

Even at the GAF meet up in Toronto, I gave kraftwerk my real name...and he just introduced himself as Kraftwerk...

Y U HURT MAH FEEL, BRO?! :'(

What's in a name, Woorloog? I took a stray recently and had a hard time coming up with a name for her. I wanted her to announce it. Alas, the cat but miows. And I've once before named a cat "Mao". There are science fiction stories a plently that use numbers for names. I've got at least 16 online names (or words I use there).

If you're feeling philosophical, why not question what the words/ideas like 'name' mean to you and others? For my part, I'm called Ben. No great shakes though about that.

Well then.

Probably the best argument in the thread for why this is a bad idea.

Things have names, descriptions to help us recognize them. A person's name is that person's description. (Odd, that thought came to me very fast and naturally). Here, i want people to describe me as Woorloog. On Xbox Live, Empyrus. IRL, my given name.
I choose to keep my given name, it feels okay, so it describes me well.

I probably wouldn't name a pet. In case of a cat, it would be just "cat". Unless i really felt some word is fitting description for the cat. If it comes to me when called, i assume it would be satisfied with the given name.

EDIT now i'm feeling really odd. Wonder if i struck some fundamental truth or something.

If we lived in a world where potential employers couldn't google your name and make judgments on stances you have taken on issues, or things you might have said in jest, then yes.

But we dont live in that world so no.

I frequented another forum that went through a "real name" phase for a while. I don't really get it. On one hand, I don't post anything here that I would be mortified to have attached to my real name-- detective GAF could figure it out if they were so motivated. But general anonymity contributes to a freer expression of opinions. Some of them are ugly, sure, but what can you do.

Not interested in having my name out there in a public forum, I'm sure people would act quite a bit different around here if their name was out there though. It would be interesting to see how behavior would change.

My initial reaction is "hell no", but in my case, the fact of the matter is that so much of my life has been tied to this name that in some ways I might as well be using my real name.

No way would I want to use my real name on GAF. I wouldn't want my life to be a completely open book and have my real name here too. That's too much.
