Would you buy a Steambox?

I don't have a gaming PC.

So yes, I would purchase one if it was decent.

It would need a dvd drive though. I can't download every game (Canadian caps and all)

No, simply because I don't think I need one.
The product is being made more for the console audience. It's a box that will be designed to compete with next-gen consoles - rather than be at the highest possible standard of tech for the money. You're going to get a better deal buying parts separately, and building your own "Steambox".

A Steambox would definitely NOT be a console. It goes against everything Valve strives for.

It would need to be an open platform, upgradable, so yeah, definitely not a console.

(in a perfect world)

It launches with full compatibly with all current/future steam games at med/max settings and with Half life 3 running on Source 2.0 with the new engine being specifically designed around the hardware inside steambox.

TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!!

Part of me hopes it is more of an accessory to the PC than a new console because I got my PC about a month ago and I want to get a PS4 down the road.

It depends much upon:

1) price(under 300€?)
2) games(HL3?)
3) controls
4) features

By all means, colour me interested, if Valve enters the console market I hope they know what they're doing; for sure it's going to be tough, there's much competition as for now, but after all when Microsoft launched the first Xbox they were absoute newcomers and look at them now after all these years...

It would have to be insanely cheaper than a PC with the same hardware, since I would be losing like every single PC feature for a box that can only run Steam.

I really hope "Steambox" is more of a standard.

So Valve sells the Steam box as a target spec for games. Which means any PC game that is "steambox" certified is guaranteed to run a at a certain performance level (ie 1080p/solid framrate/ mid teir effects).

So if you buy the box from valve you do not have to worry if you meet the spec requirements or upgrading for each new game. I think this would solve the biggest barrier keeping causal gamers from becoming pc gamers.

Then if you are an enthusiastic you can upgrade or build your own box that is more powerful and can run the game at higher resolution/framrate/fx/etc.

^^^ If thats how they do it I 100% support the idea. It was the original vision for the Xbox if i remember correctly.

Definitely. Been considering the PC bandwagon lately.

No. I have a gaming desktop and a gaming laptop that play 10,000-ish games rather than the couple dozen a Steambox will play. Games which I will be able to play on my Windows gaming desktop/laptop anyway.

edit: Or in other words, gaming laptop HDMI out to HDTV HDMI in = Far more powerful and versatile device than the Steambox could ever be.

I would if:

1) My current account (and all games) carry over, which I'm sure they would.

2) I hadn't just finished building.

I think it's a great idea to bring the console masses into the fold. Valve needs to continue encouraging the 360 gamepad support for games, and in general encouraging developers to make their games living-room friendly.

Depends what the specs are. I have no doubt it would be better than my PC but it would need to have whatever is top of the line for its time. It would save me a lot of hassle from finding out what parts to get and then driving hours to have my friend put it together.

Oh and it can't be a Linux box either. Windows or bust.

I would not be against buying a steambox, but I'd have to know more.

I'd PREFER to be able to create my own steam box though if possible.

no, to me it seems like a stupid idea as it serves no real purpose and it would seem like an attempt from valve to monopolize pc gaming as a whole by somehow claiming ownership over the entire platform

Brilliant.

It depends on what it is exactly I guess.

I highly doubt it based on the rumours so far since I'm just going to get a gaming PC and at least one of the next gen consoles. Should have me covered as far as gaming goes.

Can you upgrade it? I mean, my PC can handle most 360/PS3 ports but struggles with Battlefield 3/Metro 2033. If it manages to get a decent fps with "high" settings for most games, I'd jump on that ASAP.
