Would you buy a Wii U for $100?

I bought a WiiU at launch here in the UK, i wouldn't spend another £300+ on a Wii2 just three years after buying a WiiU, i would just feel let down that Nintendo have dropped the console i had invested money in just a couple of years before, what sort of message does it send out, you can say that the WiiU launch was a learning experience, but they had that with the launch of the 3DS when it wasn't selling had no games, the WiiU has to last just a couple of years short of the X1 & PS4.

Nintendo discontinued the Virtual Boy when it didn't catch on, even after continued price drops. I mean yeah, it would suck for many Wii U owners. Kind of reminds me when I worked for Pepsi and some people would get all pissed off when I told them their favorite soda was discontinued. What can I say, it wasn't selling. Nintendo is a business. If they can't turn the Wii U around and if things just get worse, then they need to move on. Anyway, let me throw out a hypothetical scenario here:

The Wii U continues to do poorly. Nintendo launches the Super Duper Nintendo (or whatever, lol) in Fall 2015. It has similar stats with the PS4/XBO or maybe a little less to cut cost. It can play both Wii and Wii U games. It has some major launch-window release titles, such as the next EAD Tokyo Mario game, the next Zelda game (maybe as crossgen?), and perhaps a new Metroid Prime, Star Fox, F-Zero or whatever IP revival from Retro. Third parties are back on board with Nintendo since porting takes little effort now. Maybe it even gets Final Fantasy XV? The console comes with a Pro Controller and will support Wii Remote Plus and the Wii U gamepad (now an accessory). Nintendo gets their Nintendo ID universal account system all sorted out and improves the eShop. And it comes with a 500GB or larger hard drive.

Let's say they sell this hypothetical console for $349.99 (or £250). Assuming you could afford it, would you buy it? If not, would you buy it if they gave all existing Club Nintendo members with a registered Wii U a $50 rebate for the new console or a $50 (or maybe £50) eShop code or something?

At 150. Maybe. Its just hard to justify when you have an Xbox one and ps4. That is 2 games and dlc. Actually I won't buy Wii u at all. Too many games on ps4 and xb1. Sorry Nintendo. If come with a new console in 2015 or 2016 with great specs and some cool launch games than maybe I will jump back in the train

And the scenario ends here as it would become a SF. One of the reasons Wii U is less powerful is to ensure the backward compatibility with Wii while maintaining the costs of the chips under control. A PS4 like console wouldn't be able to have backward compatibility unless it will have both new chips and Wii U chips in it. And that will skyrocket the costs (not to mention all the other issues that might arise from this). That's the main reason both Xbone and PS4 have dropped the backward compatibility. Unhappy ending.

I bought a PS3 a year ago for $230. I would buy a Wii U for $200 (seeing as that is the price point for 360 and PS3 now, and Wii U is more comparable to those systems than PS4 and Xbox One). Additionally, the thing barely has any storage space, and I'd want to buy digital, so the inevitable external hard drive is an added cost. How Nintendo can expect people to buy that thing at $300-$350 is beyond me.

Interesting. Then how about just Wii B/C and a promise to port select 1st party Wii U titles to the new console? Make the ports about half price. People that registered the game with Club Nintendo can maybe get a discount or something?

Even so. Why would I buy a new console from the company that failed me by not supporting the console I bought from them? Whatever discount I get, it's about trust. Why non-Wii U owners would buy a new console with several games at launch? Just because is more powerful? That's crazy. Will it be more powerful than PS4? If not who will buy 3rd party games on it? Why would the 3rd party developers support it? If yes, will they buy a Nintendo console for $399? Who in a sane mind will throw money at a hardware producer that dumped the previous product so early in its life?

So buying a console with at list 8-9 good and very good exclusives at $250 (or even $219) is not worthy, but buying one with launch games from the same developer (obviously far less than 8) at $399 makes perfect sense?

I would, but already did for $300, and am happy with it so far.

While I think this will change in a year or so, it seems like everyone this gen believes they'll be supporting one platform or console, until that one game that is exclusive comes out. I hope those saying "it doesn't have any games I want" at least looked at the current library to see for themselves.

If you read my other comment, I have my own opinion on what Nintendo should do to try and turn the Wii U around. If they don't remodel/rebrand/reprice the Wii U and drop the gamepad, then I think they should just ride it out for a couple more years. So in that scenario, they do support it, for at least the next 2 years. What I am saying, is if the Wii U can't turn around and just goes downhill from here in sales, then would you be all that opposed to buying their next gen console if they decided to launch it earlier than expected? If they can make a console that can get 3rd party support back by being more powerful. If they can price it competitively to the PS4 and maybe throw Wii U owners a bone with a price cut or credit of some kind.

It's a big if. First they have to solve the big issue (bigger than not selling console) that the Wii U owners are not buying a fucking game. Or maybe they are buying one. But that's it. Not even the 1st party games.

I wouldn't buy a new console if it's launched before holiday 2016. 3 years is not a normal lifetime for a console.

Yes, I would buy one for $100. $200 is tempting and we are getting closer to a sale pushing it in that direction.

OPs comments make sense, but in Nintendo's current climate, they aren't necessarily competing directly with MS or Sony from my viewpoint anyhow. Nintendo fans want them for the exclusive, some casuals want it because it is family friendly; but they have just failed to convert the Wii userbase over. It is not surprising really, they lost that market will before they transitioned to the new console.

In 2014 I'm looking at getting a PS4. Possibly when Destiny hits in September. And maybe a Vita for a Black Friday deal. I have plenty of other stuff to play until then - including 3DS, Wii, PS3, and PC games. Buying a Wii U makes no sense for me. 3D World looks awesome... but I still haven't played Galaxy 2!

My bet is that I'll be getting a Wii U in November 2015 for $199, bundled with a game that I want to play like 3D World or Mario Kart.
