Would you fund a kickstarter based on creating a modern successor to Waverace 64?

I haven't contributed to a single kickstarter yet, but as I thought about it, this is the one project I could immediately see myself throwing $50+ at, assuming the team in place had some credibility.

Since Nintendo seems content pretending the franchise no longer exists, I'd be thrilled to see anyone give it a shot. It's one of the greatest racing games ever made IMO.

We already had Wave Race Blue Storm on the Gamecube I wasn't that impressed. I'd spend $5 max on a downloadable 3DS version.

edit: I thought about it and lowered my contribution 10 dollars.

I thought the GameCube game was better?
From what I hear anyway.

It's debatable. Both are great games. I think the original is a bit better, so I chose to use it as the template, but honestly I'd just love to see anyone create a water based racer with the Waverace franchise as it's inspiration.

Only if the original guys were involved. Because even as Blue Storm proved, there's a fine line between greatness and meh. I'd need to be convinced they could pull off a worthy update.

And, yes, that would be the first time I funded a kickstarter.

I would if the quality was there but I don't see anyone being able to replicate what made that game so special.

Nintendo themselves couldn't do it, not sure anyone else can make the Wave Race game that I want....

Wave Race 64 is a masterpiece, I feel like no other water based racing game will ever top it at this point.

Agreed. That game is almost perfect, if not outright so.

I don't think enough people understand why Wave Race 64 was so amazing. This is one of the 3 or 4 n64 games I still play today. It has a perfect sense of zenness and simplicity that other jetski game lacks (especially Blue Storm). The tracks are immaculate, the announcer in both the US and especially japanese version perfectly compliment the mood. The trick mode is amazing, the music just gets it so right. I would gladly pay $100, only if the kickstarter was with the original developer, Paradigm Simulation. These geniuses are the same guys who made my other favorite game, Pilotwings 64.

If Nintendo did it. And Nintendo going to Kickstarter would never happen. So probably not. I want a Wave Race sequel. Not an indie jet ski game.

See, you get it. It's hard to explain why this isn't just a racing game in the water. Pilot Wings and this were ridiculously fun. That night level in Wave Race 64 was insane. I felt like I was really there.

Fuck no. I'd buy it day one, but Nintendo and these other big companies have enough money to not use Kickstarter for these things. It's scummy as hell.

Nintendo racing games on N64:

Wave Race 64
Mario Kart 64
1080 Snowboarding
F-Zero X
ExciteBike 64
Diddy Kong Racing

On GameCube:

Wave Race: Blue Storm
Mario Kart Double Dash
1080 Avalanche
F-Zero GX
Kirby Air Ride

On Wii:

Mario Kart Wii
Excite Truck
Excitebots

If this trend continues we're going to have like... only 1 or 2 Nintendo racing games on Wii U :(

But to answer the question in the OP... maybe? It depends on how good it looks. If they nailed everything, then yes, absolutely.

I enjoyed WR64.

I bought the NGC one based on that love.

I don't want to play any WR game again.

Mostly in the same boat. I think Blue Storm was a good game, but I didn't care for it too much at an older age. Nostalgia glasses on the first one on 64.

Yup. The controls are so perfectly dialed in that you just feel like you have total control over the jet ski.

Wave Race 64 was a masterpiece.

The design, the controls, the amazing physics, everything about it was so brilliant.

It's the kind of game that needs lots of talent and huge amount of polish.

I'm not sure if a proper spiritual successor can be created through Kickstarter.

Honestly, I'm not sure if even Nintendo themselves can top WR64 (Blue Storm was nowhere near as good as its predecessor).

You're right about people not understanding the little things that separate it from BS. BS never came close to capturing it.

Wasn't a Paradigm game though. This was an EAD game mainly done by Giles Goddard and Colin Reed. They were a couple of Englishmen who were basically acquired from the Argonaut days (when Argonaut helped with Stunt Race FX and StarFox for the SNES).

Those two were also the main people responsible for 1080 (which they made in under 9 months).

No. I'd rather donate money to charity than Kickstart a banal exercise in nostalgia that contributes nothing to a cultural conversation.

Plus, there are a handful of recent waterbased racing games that do the same thing more or less.

If you only concern yourself with games that contribute to a cultural conversation, I'd guess you're not playing too many videogames these days.

I only Kickstart things that do such a thing, which is another way of saying that I have never been tempted to contribute to a gaming Kickstarter.

I played hundreds of hours of Waverace 64 while recovering from surgery.

Objectively, Blue Storm is better in almost every regard.

That being said... yeah, what the shit? Where's our post-GCN/XBox gen Waverace?
