I might pay if they made it a mandatory thing, but the model as it stands is really good for the sake of quality discussion. You have to have an exclusive email address, you have to wait a long time to get approved, and you can get banned for being a moron. The ads aren't very intrusive anyway.

Also, I'm assuming Evilore makes money off of guests seeing ads while browsing. If he got rid of ads and made it monthly subscription thing, we'd essentially have to cover the cost of non-paying guests who browse the site if he wanted to make the same amount of money.

i would pay only if the specific perk/benefit is some kush discreetly sent to me each month. Otherwise, paying to post on a forum. Wtf man?

What extra value / options for the Gaf Gold members?

Other than that... I don't mind paying for place I visit every now and then. The only thing I miss are those avatars gifs.

I'd rather see a huge banner around this time every year with Evilore's smiling face and "I need your support" somewhere in there, just like the Wikipedia guy did for a few years.

I never donated then, but they made for good photoshop material.

Evilore makes way more than enough money to ever do this anyway. This would never happen, even as an option. He's adamantly against donations too.

Still, porn and being able to say whatever I want would be fun.

If I pay can I get shares then.

God help us if that ever happens

I would never pay a subscription fee for a message board. I am not, however, against paying for special features if I find them beneficial and worth the cost of admission.

No. I'm fine with some of the rules of google supported gad. I'm just that poor.
And after having several meeting Evil in several occasions, he's doing good work and deserves that monetary gain.
After all gaf is more than games at this point. It's one of the best message boards.

No. That's crazy.

Why pay for something you get free elsewhere at equal or better quality? Besides, Evilore is overflowing with ad revenue. It would really be dumb to want to personally give him your own money.

I know there's a sucker born every minute, but that sucker ain't me.

I think this is a good question, and something I would like to see explored.

Even though the OP makes it clear that the fee would only be for certain premium features, I think most people still read it as "Would you pay to access NeoGAF exactly as it is now, and have everyone who doesn't pay get kicked out?" Why would you quit the forum entirely if there was still an option to read and participate for free?

If it was just a service extension and it did not splinter discussion into Members-Only forums, I don't see the problem with it at all. The bonuses offered in the OP are not particularly compelling, though. I think I'd like to see the Search feature improved, most of all. Maybe allow YouTube/web video embedding. Maybe allow Gold members to directly link and see direct links to mildly NSFW content (none of this stuff like "Do a Google Image Search for some girl's name and you'll see what I'm talking about").

The problem is that it is difficult to come up with features that justify an added cost, and don't just feel like they are being hidden behind a pay-wall for the sake of money-making. This is the problem with Xbox Live Gold, because they charge you for a ton of features that cost them almost nothing to implement or maintain.

A monthly fee sounds hard to swallow, esp. being unemployed now. I can be more easily convinced on a yearly fee... For example I always felt Flickr's fee of 30 bucks (or is it 25?) a year for a Pro account is a great deal (if u actually use Flickr enough to benefit from the subscription).

And even though I occasionally miss being able to use an animated GIF as an avatar, I'm happier not having to see some of the animated avatars used here in the past. So I don't want them back.

No. One of the best things about GAF is the huge variety of people we get here and joining in discussions. Astrolad said it best.

I honestly would, and I've said it many times before, but GAF overall would suffer for it.

Being ad-supported means you get a wide variety of perspectives and expertise on here -- things that are really valuable like poors who have nothing better than to sit around all day waiting for iOS apps to drop .25 so they can post about it on GAF or people who spend days creating painfully comprehensive official threads (updated daily) for mediocre games.

No one who has any sort of a job or career would have time to even think about doing that, which is what makes the Freedom of GAF so valuable to everyone, even those of us who could "spare a dime" for it.
