Would you rather have a sequel or a spiritual successor?

For your favorite game without a sequel, would you rather have a new IP that has similar characters, gameplay act, or a direct follow up?

It kind of depends, because I love revisiting settings, but if it's a really huge departure like Chrono Cross, I'd prefer it have a spiritual connection instead.

That depends on how the game ended. If everything was wrapped up in a neat little bow, I think a spiritual successor would fit best. If there was still MORE I wanted to know about the characters or world, a sequel would work.

Also, for creators that are no longer w/ the company, since they can't legally make a sequel, a spiritual successor works great, like mighty no 9.

If the game is good then a direct sequel, if the series has taken a bad direction then it's better a spiritual successor that goes back to the roots.

Probably at this point, a spiritual successor.

I would fucking lavish a game in the vein of Majora's Mask but perhaps in a more modern setting with better combat. Damn, you made me want something I can't have. I'll take another Zelda sequel too, but now you put the thought in my head, I can't get over a Majora's Mask spiritual successor.

My favorite game without a sequel that I can remember right now is Shadow of the Colossus. That said, definitely a spiritual sequence (like TLG).

Modern Zelda.

Depends. Sometimes you just want to know what comes next.

But I'm all for reimaginings. If Sega decided to make a Skies of Arcadia game at this point, I wouldn't want it to be a direct sequel.

Sequel.

The only time I see that a spiritual successor is necessary is when there is extreme narrative baggage (which there are few franchises that meet this criteria, namely Gears and AC) or one of the mechanics to be changed is an integral one (even fewer examples).

My favorite game is Chrono Trigger and I don't want modern Square to come anywhere near that franchise. Squaresoft struggled making a sequel....... Square Enix would just plain butcher it.

But in general I think it really depends.
There are games that feel like the world, story and characters could be used for a direct sequel while other feel more "complete" and would work better with a Spiritual successor

depends if the story or the gameplay was the strength

Bloodborne is a perfect example of a spiritual successor being more desirable.

Certain series I would never have rebooted or bucked for a spiritual successor.

If the original team is in tact, then a sequel is fine. If it is a long duration or the original team is detached/fragmented then I would always prefer a spiritual successor.

I would actually love to see a prequel to TLOU on PS4. So many explosions/hordes in the beginning. And then they would finally be able to introduce a horde mode into multiplayer.

Spiritual usually as most game stories aren't really needing following up on. Like, do I need Condemned 3, given the way that story turned? Not really. I'd rather they just make a new horror game if they felt compelled to go down that route.

It honestly all comes down to the game itself and if the ending left anything opened up. Like lets say a true sequel to MGS4, I just couldn't imagine it happening because of how it ended. Now for a game like Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, I would have loved to see a Sequel towards and not a spiritual successor. I felt like the game itself was left open for a sequel, but we never got it and I doubt we ever will :(

It depends on the game and whether it would work as a franchise or not.

I would like a sequel to Sonic 3 and I'm surprised Sega have never tried to make a Sonic 4

I'd prefer a spiritual successor to Ghost Trick because of how well it ended.

Depends entirely on the game. A story heavy game like Uncharted? Sequel of course.

Something like Souls? I think a spiritual successor is better for that. DS1 lost a lot of its mysteriousness and vastness by the mere existence of a DS2.

It depends on why I liked the original in the first place. If it was more about the gameplay then a spiritual successor is fine. If I was more invested in the story/setting/characters and the story arc wasn't wrapped up neatly then I would prefer a direct sequel.

I'm going to rub reality all in your face 😆

I am indifferent. I do not mind stories that span multiple installments, no matter how many. I rarely take the "convoluted" critique seriously. On the other hand, I understand the practicality of having spiritual successors and the opportunity of having a clean slate while still retaining key characteristics of the originator.

Someone doesn't Kingdom Hearts and Metal Gear.

Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid, GOW I would prefer to have a sequel.

Games like ICO and SoTC are the kind I would prefer to have spiritual successors.

While I can't think of any games to apply this would be my rule.

If it was the story I absolutely liked then a sequel.

If it was just gameplay than a spiritual succesor.

Games with both would lean on The sequel side.

I would love a spiritual successor to Okami by Platinum Games.
Same. Okami ended in a great way to me, a sequel isn't needed but I did love everything so I definitely want a spiritual successor.

I would like to see Streets of Rage rebooted.

I want a spiritual successor to The Warriors game.

I crave a ZoE3 though.

Most games I'd prefer a successor instead I think.

The only games where sequels are acceptable are:
Sport games
Grand Theft Auto
Racing games e.g. GT, Forza
Soul's games
Metal Gear Solid games

However, I very much prefer spiritual successors. Bloodborne very much captures the spirit of the Soul's games yet it's an exciting new IP.

I am dying to see sequels to certain games though e.g. Jedi Knight II, Republic Commando, SWAT 4. Hell at this point I'll just take a spiritual successor.

If the existing story had good closure then the spiritual successor. No need to dig back into something that finished on a good note already. It rarely ever improves things.

If there's hardly any plot or it's just dumb then sequel away! I really don't care much either way as long as it plays well.

Metal Gear is my favorite series!

MGS is the one series I hope never gets a reboot, at least not in my lifetime. The series spanning decades is one of the coolest things about it. I mean here we are in 2014 awaiting a game that further details the intricate origins of a mustache-twirling villain of a 2D top-down 1987 MSX game. Like holy shit.
