WoW: Scroll of Resurrection Revamp - Free lvl 80 Character

Anyone else see this as desperation to keep stockholders from freaking the fuck out? First the subscribe for a year because we have zero content coming with a side of diablo 3. Now this.

I am considering just saying "fuck it", back out of my 12 month commitment, unsub for 3 months, and resub for the free 80. The free 80 is worth more to me than the $60 for Diablo 3. I'd like to play another character through Cata and dungeons, but don't want to go through the (now boring to me) 1-80 grind.

You may as well, there's not going to be any new content coming sans slight remixes of holidays.

Wait, you can do this?

Maybe...maybe not.

Here's their legal wording on the subject:

If your World of Warcraft subscription lapses during the Twelve Month Commitment, or if you fail to make any required payments or timely payments, Blizzard reserves the right to terminate your participation in this offer in addition to any and all other remedies that may be available to Blizzard at law.

Nah, they're trying to boost you closer to the point in the game where it becomes this other game where you have to be online at certain times and run raids with dozens of other people who are also structuring their lives around what time they're supposed to meet with their guildies. They probably realized that their longest subscribers are those types, whereas more of the casuals are probably looking at their credit card statements and going, "woah, I still subscribe to that game?"

well thats the crux of the problem isn't it, with a badly designed game that invalidates raid content with each new patch/raid addition there simply is not longstanding content and you need to be boosted to maintain viability.

Blizzard has changed what it meant to be a MMO and made single player game with that amount of content.

SWTOR has the same problem they horribly got wrong the exp curve.

Wait, you can do this?
Nope.

Any active World of Warcraft non-trial player can send a Scroll of Resurrection. To be eligible to receive a Scroll of Resurrection, your friend must have previously purchased at least one month of game time at any point in the past, and your friend’s account must have been inactive since March 4, 2012 or earlier. A few other prerequisites apply -- such as a free upgrade to a Battle.net account for players who haven’t played since 2009 or earlier -- so be sure to check out the FAQ for full eligibility details.

Hilariously good timing.

Let my sub lapse two weeks ago. /giggle

Burning this last time card I have sitting around to gain a free 80. It'll be worth it even if I don't play these next two months.

Just received my scroll, and am going through the free reward claim process now, in case anyone has questions that I can offer to answer.

I freaked out at first, because I hit Accept and got the "this account isn't eligible for Resurrection" message. I was 99% positive I'd never been Res'd in the past, and the History of Res's is clear. I hit back, and hit Accept again, and it worked. So...yeah, if that happens to you, try again. Seems to be buggy.

The interface is clean and straightforward. All my characters on all my accounts are displayed, and the game's offering me the chance to boost any of them to 80. Right now, it seems like I can move any character (not just the boosted one) to my friend's server/faction. I'm 99% sure it has to be their server, less sure than it has to be their faction, and unsure altogether if you can do just one but not the other.

The interface makes it explicit that I can log in right now to create a brand new character and then come back to this page to boost that one to 80, so that's nice.

What do you think guys, for me. Rogue, Warrior or Warlock?

Those are all the classes I have at 10-30 and have the least experience with. Heavily leaning toward Warrior.

It will.

This is pretty much a cycle that has been around forever. The same thing happened in WOTLK, middle of the expansion came and Blizzard was losing subs. Internet was going on and on about how it was the end of WoW and nothing would ever be the same. Of course Cataclysm came around and subs jumped way back up and passed the previous record.

4.2 was basically that same problem. Normal Firelands was a pretty big step up in difficulty from normal launch content and most of the people who didn't have the time or skill for it simply quit. The reason we saw less people drop off this quarter though, is due to them finally adding raid finder. Now the worst player in the world who also happens to only play at 3 in the morning can go slay all the current end game bosses and have a chance at new shiny gear, people are seriously addicted to it and it's about time Blizzard added it.

Anyway, subs are probably going to jump up again when MoP come out, that's just how this works.

In my opinion, it won't. It'll see an occasional bump, like you say with the expansion but it'll plummet down faster after it and it'll bleed a bit especially as the market saturates with more and more big online games this year.

This is a lot different than the lulls during BC and Cataclysm and the only reason it slowed down is they aligned the planets during the Holiday with 4.3 and a huge promotion among other things and ate a giant revenue loss to do so. Blizzard has been very conservative with these sweeteners in the past now they're lobbing them out at a rate that makes legitimately dying MMOs look tame. They're doing some very smart stuff here, but it's all happening for a reason.

I mean I don't think it's keeling over, not even close, but it's clear it's winding down on it's way out to pasture while the effort is all going into their new titles. It's just an old game and it doesn't have any fangs to sink into a lot of people anymore.

Ok, clarification. You definitely can only transfer the character you're boosting. You can click on just one, and both options will be listed on the one page.

You can opt instead to forgo the boost and simply transfer an 80+ character.

edit-

Oh shit, I didn't realize you get all of this too:

Confirm your Scroll of Resurrection rewards claim:

LEVEL UP TO:80
TALENT SPEC: Protection

Wait, there's more! Your character will also receive:

Level 80 bags, reagents, food, and water.
280% flight speed skill (if not yet learned).
Flight paths for a level 80 character.

Wait, you can do this?

You can if you call up Blizzard directly. However it flags your account/card and you won't ever be able to do stuff like this again. Basically, they treat it the same as if you had a chargeback/payment dispute and cleared it up.

Pretty certain that canceling the annual pass would make you ineligble for the Scroll of Resurrection rewards.

This is truly hilarious! I'm suddenly rolling an 80 Tauren Warrior I didn't have yesterday, full Prot-specced and in a full tank-oriented set of 232 greens (which look hideous btw, but w/e).

Also, another small panic moment; when you first log into your server character select screen, your upgraded character will still appear to be in old gear and at its original level. Log in, and you'll be 80 with the new gear on.

Another warning: Make sure that if you want to claim the transfer, you do so all at once while you're level-boosting. I opted not to (wanted to keep the character on Mal'ganis), and for curiosity's sake, I tried to go transfer him now and the option isn't there. Only a paid one.

I'm sure that if you bitch at Blizzard and claim you intended to claim the transfer but misclicked, they'd do it for you, but just avoid the hassle.

What the fuck? Epic flying too?

I know, right? lol

I'm going to log back in to actually confirm that's there. I forgot to check.

My character was plopped right into Orgrimmar in a full green 232 set with 4 Frostweave bags, and my mailbox crammed with all the shit my character was once carrying in his old bags.

Edit-

Confirmed:

280 Flying, and all relevant flying skills (Artisan, Flight Master's License, Cold Weather Flying, etc.), except Master Riding, which still costs 4k+ at the trainer.

Oh, and bonus: they've given me maxed (450/450) First Aid. lol

I've played a lot of MMORPGs so I get a lot of e-mails from a number of them about signing back up, but his is probably the most extensive set of bonuses I've seen any MMORPG offer for resubbing. Seems like a rather boring and lazy means of trying to get people back into the game though, so at least for me it's not particularly enticing. The free upgrade to Cataclysm is pretty crazy though if you didn't have that before.

Best e-mail I ever got trying to get me to come back to an MMORPG was this one though:

What about other professions. 450/450 Fishing or no go.
lol

Confirmed that all the class skills have been learned up to and including level 80.

For talents, in my case (I chose a Prot Warrior), they dumped enough points into Prot to get the talent at the end of the tree (ignoring a few along the way -- I don't know Prot well enough to know if this is random, or if the talents were the ideal prot cookie cutter build), and they put the 4 remaining points into the other trees, 2 in each to max out one talent each.

Nothin else. My 1/75 Mining that was there before is still there, haha.

Reputations look to be completely untouched.

In addition to the flying skill, they also gave me an actual flying mount too.

You know I wonder how many people would go back for a sub that is half price.

$9.99/month - Normal
$8.99/month - 3 month sub
$7.99/month - 6 month sub

Current subscribers convert to whatever...

I know minimum 15-20 people that would re-sub in a heartbeat ;P

Personally I have played since launch, and will keep playing till a game makes me stop playing WoW. Or until I stop having fun in it. I only play 2-3 times a week for a few hours and it is the perfect amount.

Oh snap, which one did you get? Plain Griffon/Windrider?

Thats actually pretty neat of them to put you in a set of 232 gear so that you will be functional. Ditto for training your skills and everything and giving you a flying mount and the skill to use it. That will pretty much ensure you can just... start playing immediately.

They dont put that much thought into 90% of the other crap they do or change in game.

Datdeclininguserbase. :biteslip:

Gah.. wish my account wasn't banned. It got hacked like 6 months back when I wasn't even playing it and sense I wasnt I never bothered to get it unbanned.

They're looking at almost a full year without a content patch in 2012. Mists of Pandaria was supposed to be a Spring release in their original estimates. By now they've learned their lesson not to schedule for a 18 month production cycle.

At this point I'm just tired of Azeroth in general. Even if it were F2P, a lot of people wouldn't play it. The enthusiasm going into Mists of Pandaria is the lowest ever for one of their expansions.

They better start showing some Titan stuff at this point, and do a linked WoW / Titan account system.

5 Dungeons and 2 raids were added since Cataclysm launch. 2 of those dungeons were already in the game and just re-tuned.

Content delivery is beyond awful at this point.

Good try WoW. Never again.....never again....

Seriously though, for the people that played in Vanilla WoW and are still playing, how has the raiding scene not gotten incredibly boring for you yet? Is it because of your guild?

Every expansion I bought I joined a guild, made buddies, raided for a bit, then everyone loses interest and quits. I don't see how people raid for months and months on end with the same grind and play mechanics unless it's more of a friendship thing then an entertainment thing. I was literally making up any excuse possible to not raid the last time I was actively subbed.

So tempting lol.........

But I wouldn't even know what class to be, my main was a rogue but I did play a mage and a hunter to level 30ish

My guild is what keeps me going. That, and a desire to see harder content. Sadly, the content is a bit lacking at the moment.

I get the most enjoyment out of the game now by helping my guildmates, and fellow players.

That, and trolling the ones who are arrogant little shits.

What the fuck? Epic flying too?

Now that is some serious bullshit if I ever saw any.

I'd be more than willing to send a scroll to anyone who wants one. I'd love to get that spectral wind rider on a couple of my characters. Just drop me a PM if you want me to send you a scroll.

Meh, Im moving to Diablo 3 but Ill play some WoW till then. Ive got mild interest in their next MMO. Super time consuming MMO's were easy for me to manage in the past, but that was years and years ago. Something I can play in short bursts like D3 is much better.

Same, if you want a scroll, hit me up, Id send you one.

Do the friend you give the scroll to get to keep their account updated to Cata if they haven't bought it or do they have to buy after their initial free time?

I have a friend who quit after BC, and he might be interested in this actually if he doesn't have to buy WOTLK and Cata if I send him a scroll.

Ladies and gentlemen: Panic Mode Blizzard.

Anyone playing the game knows they've been in panic mode for most of Cataclysm. Content was rushed, one hell of a switcharoo in design philosophy, raids not finished, outright lying in articles (See: Cataclysm Dungeon Post Mortem for a fantastic example), and all around general sloppiness with how they handled it.

Could i get a scroll please :)

You sure could. PM me an email and I'll get on it as soon as battle.net comes back up.

You get upgraded all the way to Cata free. No need to buy Wrath. As it's promotional deal and a limited time, you probably have to buy within the promotional period. =P

Not sure what I am going to do with this information lol. I suppose at minimum I will re-upp one of my alt accounts for free Cata and the mount.

Do they have to pay for one month for the sender to get a mount? 'cause I'd love to get that sparkle ponny 2.0.
