Wreck-It Ralph |OT| I'm Gonna Wreck It!

In the art book there is a picture of a small brown bear wearing a green cap that looks exactly like this character. I'm sorry, but it isn't Link. Also, that turtle/frog thing is Frogger.
The bear you are thinking of wears a red cap. I still think it may be Link. Also I don't remember Frogger having a shell or being blue.
Pokeymans don't have arcade releases.
There are lots of game character references that never had an arcade release in this movie. Also Pokemon Pinball.

I went for an 8PM showing (2D), the whole theater was filled with adults only.

This movie is a big hit with adults who grew up as video-game enthusiastic, I applaud the homage to arcade games primarily especially classic 80s games

<================ best cameo of the movie

Nintendo actually has a lot of their mascots in modern arcade releases now. Shouldn't be too hard to put them in the sequel. I mean there's Pokemon Battrio, Donkey Kong Jungle Fever, Mario Kart GP, F-Zero AX, Punch-Out!!, etc.

nah, I rather them stick to real arcade characters such as original Donkey Kong, Jr, Excite Bike, Mario Bros., Wild GunMan

Saw it today with my parents (well the only reason I got the tickets was through something my mother is a member of so I couldn't exactly not take her). Now my dad knows nothing about videogames outside of who Mario, Link and Pikachu are and even he enjoyed it. The fact that most of videogame references are not is your face and anyone can enjoy the movie whatever their level of knowledge is a strength. This could have so easily fallen into the "us gamers" pitfall so I'm glad they avoided that. And yes a tear did drizzle down my face.

Almost certain most people in the cinema mistook Tapper (unless I ended up in the same room as the mysterious Under 10s Tapper Appreciation Society) as a Mario cameo. Though I will admit I looked him up shortly after the first trailer was released.

And of course most people walked out during the credits, which is stupid since there was still more to see during them. Well they missed out on the
kill screen
so tough titties to them.

Shame I can't talk to anyone I know about it until February.

The thing being highlighed in the Grand Game Central is not Luke Skywalker on his tauntaun (?), it's a Joust knight riding his ostrich!

The owner of the arcade was an obvious hommage to Walter Day, legendary figure in the retro arcade world and owner of Twin Galaxy, the arcade gaming competition featured in King of Kong

Felix Fix It is a mix of Donkey Kong and especiall The Intellivision classic BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (no relation at all with the movies), which was released in 1982 or so

beauty_and_the_beast.png

Video of Beauty and the Beast:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nN11J60EHv0

Even the ending of the game is the same, with the beast falling off the building in a 'cutscene'. Just like Felix, you climb up using windows while stuff is being throw down on you by the beast and etc etc etc..

Had a great time with my wife and son today for Wreck it Ralph in 3D. Some good moments but not a lot of laughs like I was hoping for, still very enjoyable.

The trailer for The Hobbit was badass and crystal clear.

Probably. It is more of an actual movie then the trailer lets on. Best way to describe it is a mix of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Toy Story, and a dash of another animated classic I can't say. Now it does have flaws so don't go in with too lofty expectations but it is a wonderful film. The nostalgia stuff is just the sprinkles on top of an already good cake so to speak. They are mostly in the first 10 minutes of the movie but they are not, wisely, too overwhelming to lose the audience.

That is my two cents on it in a nutshell. Hope it helps.
this is very helpful, thanks

I liked how the credits for Original Score came up at the same time as a High Score screen.

Because score.

Subtle wordplay.

With that said, Sugar Rush as a racing theme video game is kinda a misconception right? I mean candy-themed tracks exist sure but they generally are just one or two tracks of a game rather than the whole racing game being built upon it. :P

When I watched it I thought I would like to play Sugar Rush, but then I realised it would be one of those grindy korean racing mmos. ):

Anyone else notice there is a rainbow road and a reference to the donkey kong track*?

* from mario kart wii where you go up a mountain then a huge cannon shoots all the racers

Yeah, they had several references to kart racing games and popular kart racing tracks during the race sequence. Sugar Rush was kind of weird, it was a bit shift tone from the other areas of the film and did feel sort of the least game-like, but then it also was in some ways the most game-like because of it's structure and, for lack of a better term, 'mechanics'.
IE, the customizing kart option, the 'mini-game', the actual kart race was really game-like, the behind-the-scenes coding, the glitch, and of course, the final boss battle.
Thematically it was more like a weird cross between Alice in Wonderland and Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, but it did manage to still feel like a video game even if most of the jokes at that point were coming from the candy stuff.

And below is the NOISIA remixed Skrillex track as it appears on the album. Parts of this play during the Hero's Duty sequence. I think it's pretty catchy, actually. It's got a real Super Metroid vibe going on before the dance stuff kicks in and then you gotta love that sample. :)

I totally balked when I saw the Skrillex cameo in the movie, followed by the music for Hero's Duty, BUT! I kinda liked it, probably because of said Metroidiness and it really did fit the game...... I suppose it didn't ruin anything, I so guess... there is a reluctant redemption story in here somewhere, lol

I don't quite understand the whole "Sugar Rush was not game-like enough!" complaint, as if we have some universally agreed-upon definition of what a decidedly "game-like" world is. Makes me think people say that only because it's not "8-bit style" like Fix-It Felix (as in, no low-res art, no beeps and bloops). A more modern game like Sugar Rush was not going to have those elements.

It's not like Sugar Rush was completely devoid of video-game elements either.
Selectable characters, race-win coins, leaderboards, glitched characters, glitched geometry you can clip through, unfinished levels, car creation mini-games, a ton of Mario Kart references, etc., etc., etc.

ah... thought the original design might have been a homage

Nah, his design is influenced by an old style soda jerk or a member of a barbershop quartet.

There are changes to the sprite between the two versions of the Tapper game however.

That version is definitely more soda jerk while the other one is turn-of-the-century bartender.

paperman was a gorgeous short. loved the animation and direction.

wreck-it-ralph felt like a movie made by 80s arcade dwellers who stopped playing video games right before street fighter ii came out. you have sonic give a psa, and don't start it with 'sonic sez' or end it with 'and that's... no good!'? come on!

i genuinely did not see the plot twist coming at the end. that was a surprise.

the movie itself wasn't bad, but i thought sarah silverman was fucking terrible.

IAWTP, except the physics in Paperman were terrible.

Tee hee
kill screen over the Disney logo at the end of the credits.

Yeah, I missed that. Is it up anywhere?

So was Paperman 3D, 2D or a mix? Was there some sort of rotoscoping? I loved it, but it looked like nothing I've ever seen before.

The more and more I think about this movie the more I love it.

I think one of the best story decisions they made was not making Felix and Ralph antagonists. They actually like each other-in any other movie, they would have been out to undermine each other. Even though Ralph was jealous of the attention that Felix got-he didn't rest Felix himself.

Yeah, I was surprised when Felix
invited him inside for cake
.

Damn right! One of the best games ever in arcade history.

Really enjoyed the movie, it was done really well.

You could tell that he didn't really want to...but he's too good of a guy to just say no.

Gene, on the other hand, is a boss.
"Well now, you can live alone in the penthouse."

Great movie. Took 4 kids to a viewing and at the end of the movie there was thunderous applause and cheering from the audience.

The scene with
the two of them outside the party was amusing for that reason. They didn't actively hate each other (which would've been the obvious, lazy way of setting up the characters), they were more like the awkward co-workers who are just uncomfortable in the same room and very, very rarely over spoke to each other. It was the rest of the building that were actively assholes to him. Or maybe just Gene.

One of the best Disney movies in the last decade (not saying much I know). I truly enjoyed it. The AKB song at the end was a funny surprise.

Took my daughter this afternoon and the place was packed.Had to to sit in like the 5th row in the pit area down front.Actually liked it.

As far as the movie goes,we both had a good time with the story. We didn`t expect there to be as much as there was.She didnt really get the retro arcade aspects but when I explained everything as it came on screen she seemed to get into it more. Now she wants a cabinet in her room...

She came home and immediately played Mario Kart. Also HATED the Rihanna song.

Probably my most significant complaint was the use of that Rihanna song during the training montage.

WTF was with that? It was so out of place.

All kinds of little things that were well-thought-out.

Vannelope is
on the side of the machine, but she's not playable...but nobody in the arcade notices this as a problem due to the rotating roster of characters. It's the same reason the king doesn't seem out of place.

The king
would want to stay in a cutesy, non-threatening racing world like Sugar Rush, since any death would be permanent for him.

AND
It's the latest, greatest racing game-so he's popular. Brilliant.

Yeah, the Rihanna song was a strange choice. I mean it didn't feel wrong for the scene, it just kind of felt out of place being the only lyrical song and the only licensed song. If it was kind of like how Tron Legacy did and add some music from the period of the arcades, then yeah, that works, but it just felt kind of off.

Would it be? He was part of the game's code at that point, so it's a bit of a different scenario than everyone else's game hopping.

Well, I'm not sure about the details.
I don't remember if they gave a specific time that he "went Turbo," but presumably it was a long time ago for it to be the thing that it is around the arcade. The game that triggered the event looked 16-bit era at best.

So how many years has he been sneaking around in the background, somehow making sure that nobody knew he was still alive? Either Sugar Rush is older than we think, or he's been hiding for an implausibly long time.

We don't know the details of how it worked.
A KING of some sort was part of the game's code, and perhaps the game recognized him as that king, but that doesn't mean he was safe as a result.

We know that
the game he first went Turbo on was RoadBlasters which came out in 1987. Sugar Rush came out in 1997. So, he was lingering around for close to a decade.

"Shit Up and Drive" was not the only licensed song, nor was it the only song with words. "Celebration" is playing in Felix Jr's apartment during their party.

Also, regarding the king:
He locked up their memories so whether or not there was a king before him was irrelevant. Though they make it quite clear at the end that there was a queen.

People really having issues with Rihanna's "Shut Up and Drive" song? It fit fine with the scene, and added zing and groove to Vanellope's training.

And it's not like the song just came out of nowhere....it's been around since 2008 from Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad" album....

Saw the movie again and it's even more awesome the second time around catching all the references and cameos! Best Disney gem and treat for the year!
