Writers Guild of America: Videogames Noms Announced

As the NeoGAF ambassador from WET-topia, or the only guy who actually played WET, have no fear that you are missing out on some incredibly well written narrative experience.

WET is B-Movie shlock with an absolute obsession for Quentin Tarantino, but with none of his dialogue flair or intricate writing. Kill Bill, which WET desperatly wishes to ape, paws over martial arts and wushu movies with a film makers adoration while WET simply cribs the visuals and dialogue because "its cool".

WET is dumb, its shallow and there's nothing here that would put the game above practically any other video game released this year. I'm not sure why I'm even capitalising the game's name - as if it deserves such recognition.

Arkham Asylum is far more deserving a slot than WET.

I can't believe Paul Dini didn't get nominated for Batman:AA. Even outside of the "cliched" storyline, which isn't really all that cliched, it's just an action film. But for all the Joker messages that go out over the intercom, the Arkham med center voice overs, the Arkham stone tablets, and best of all, the inmate interviews, Batman:AA was so fucking well written.

I guess I find it hard to believe that after all the years of working on Batman:TAS that he isn't a member of the WGA, and therefore up for consideration...

Stupid list but at least UC2 is there so it can win, its the only decent game with decent writing this year.

Lol @ MW2.

I can only wonder about the thought process that leads to a list of writing award nominees that fails to include Tales of Monkey Island. The mind boggles.

Uncharted 2 has the best story of the nominees, but I still don't know if it is worthy of an award. I would say the story itself was pretty weak, but the characterisation and dialogue was excellent.

Who cares? None of these stories are actually any good. There are better things to argue about.

Right which is why we are wondering where those games are.

This is interesting. I thought that Braid was amazing, and that Blow is a wonderful designer. However, I did not like the actual writing in the game much, I must say. The narrative was superb but the writing in the little book bits wouldn't stand up in the medium that he thinks it is most comparable (that of modern literary fiction). If he had a writer/editor, I think that Braid would have been ever better than it was.

He does have a point about who is allowed to win this, however; and it seems rather closed-minded to do a recruitment drive only to the people you've already recruited...

It's not some bro conspiracy. How many WGA members play games? They vote for what they've heard of, or whatever "name" writer did a game.

If the SAG people voted for voice actors, Hugh Jackman would win in a landslide. If there was a musicians union, they would vote for Hans Zimmer.

Ghostbusters was a brand new Ghostbusters script written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis just for the game.

(not to mention voiced by the original cast)

HOW DID THIS NOT GET THEIR ATTENTION?

Who are the judges?

Came for the om nom nom jokes, stayed for the outrage. I'm pretty surprised that Dragon Age didn't get a nod considering that, at the very least, it had the most writing of any major game released last year.

Edit: ah the entrants have to be WGA members or at least have applied to join. Carry on.

Too many cooks and all that. I wonder how that compares to the first Modern Warfare, where the story was genuinely top notch.

Uncharted 2 is the only worthy choice there.

This is the same group which nominated Star Trek's script for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Avatar for best original :lol

They manage to come up with an entire list of non-deserving titles.

OMEGLE warfare 2
when you start chat, shout "STAR"
if no response, order your men to "STAY FROSTY"
if greeted with "TEXAS", ask where their unit is
they should repond with "WHISKEY HOTEL"
if greeted with anything else order your men to "OPEN FIRE"
any punctuation alone is counted as a no response
if you encounter any pauses, your enemy is likely dead and you should order "RAMIREZ TAKE POINT"
if no response, that means you just got a kill
never order anyone other than Ramirez to take care of anything
if the coast is clear, order "WE'RE OSCAR MIKE"
press Disconnect to move to the next area
if your stranger disconnects, it is counted as a kill
however, if he catches on about mw2, you take a casualty

Maybe they should to games from 1 or 2 gens ago. :/

Maybe people wouldn't notice if they nominated Broken Sword and Grim Fandango and Planescape Torment instead of 2009's games.

Uncharted 2 and A.Creed 2 I can see from what I played, with U2 getting that nod imho. Seriously though, MW2 is getting FAR too much credit here. It has some of the most elementary and generic writing out there. Worst part is, it doesn't have the acting to save it. Far and aways, overrated, probably due to the hype. Even KZ2 has better writing compared to MW2, if that says anything.

Maybe they could do a non-2009 list?

Or a list where more than one or two nominees are adequate?

Low blow =/ The noms aren't that bad. UC2 had great writing.

Dude, Wet.

Think about that for a sec.

HOW DID THIS NOT GET THEIR ATTENTION?
Because it's not true. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis did not write the script for Ghostbusters: The Game. They consulted and contributed. While they had final say over elements of the fiction, that's not the same as being the writers.

I'd put Brütal Legend above a few games in that list. Just finished the game because I thought the setting, characters and story were pretty cool even though I hated the RTS gameplay :)

According to the comments, Tim Langdell is the vice chair of the WGA video game writer's caucus and was Chair of the Videogame Writing Award Committee. If there was ever a reason to disregard the WGA, this is it. Why won't this guy just leave video games alone?!

Can anyone tell offhand if any of these games used the word 'edge' anywhere in any of the scripts?

Between this and the previous winners being "Dead Head Fred" and "Star Wars: The Force Unleahsed", the WGA awards may have managed to become the least noteworthy video game awards ever.

"To be eligible for entry, games must have been released between December 1, 2008 and November 30, 2009, the work must contain separate writing credit(s), and the credited game writer(s) must have been and/or must have applied to become members of the WGA’s Videogame Writers Caucus at the time scripts were submitted."

So these awards are worthless unless we know who was actually eligible for it.

Wait a minute...

You mean to tell me, that on the face of this planet there exists a human being...

named Duppy Demetrius!?

i cant believe people think UC2 had a good story or good writing, i really cant. nothing about it grabbed me in any way. and some of the dialogue just completely killed it for me, especially the
unbelievably old and tired "im scared of clowns" joke at the end...
. what in the hell were they thinking!? that one idiotic line made me lose all respect for the game's writing. it was just too much.

and dont get me started on MW2.... hahah, oh my goodness.

to be honest, i cant think of any game last year that had a really good story. Demon's Souls maybe, but thats because there's very little story and it's all so subtle. helps keep a mysterious vibe which i like.
