Tried to watch an American Dad episode...

Hulu is for recent episodes, not their entire back catalogue.

Except when you want current season episodes. :D

I really do like Netflix more than Hulu though, much better deal.

I don't know how many shows that Hulu has in total but I can say that I went there once to try it out and they only had clips and featurettes on the shows I searched for. They probably should have focused on expanding their catalog before trying for money.

You get more with Netflix though.

Yeah, but it's not the same content in most cases. Netflix is a good deal, but Hulu Plus will no doubt grow, as well. I don't think it's really a matter of picking one or the other.

Oh you! The tradition lives on!

The "tranny surprise" tab meme was, I believe, banned here for a while. But then it was decided that "tranny" isn't offensive for those who can't be bothered to care, so maybe it isn't or maybe I'm wrong in thinking it had become so.

Who cares if it is? You'll be sacrificing yourself on the altar of tradition. No greater way for a man to go than to go fighting for what he believes. I, for one, WILL NOT stand idly by while some new age hippy kills tranny surprise. NO, SIR.

If Hulu took content away to make it Premium, that would suck. And I bet to some extent they did that. But for the most part, what they did was provide a premium experience.

Err, wasn't this thread started because OP used to be able to watch old episodes and now can't. I'd say they took away a pretty big chunk of content in order to make a premium experience. Then, of course, you pay 10 a month but still have to watch ads (according to Wikipedia which may or may not be right.)

whoa, wait? i thought that the "it's a trap" thing was banned, but tranny surprise is too?

That seems like a pretty reasonable price for on demand TV content. Especially compared to cable prices.

No recent episodes. 95% of their content can't be streamed. Netflix means waiting for days for a dirty, scratched disk containing three episodes of year old TV shows.

It does until you consider their competition (Netflix) which offers similar content for the same price. Granted you can't watch new episodes but you can already watch those with Hulu free and you get a metric ton more for your 10 bucks with Netflix. Netflix is already starting to get up to date content with stuff like Party Down so if they expand that it'll be pretty much all over for Hulu Plus unless they start finding ways to add real premium content of some sort.

I find Hulu to be extremely expensive for what you are getting. If there were no ads, maybe, if they had more content, probably. As it is right now though? It doesn't seem like that great of a deal per-dollar per-hour of entertainment.

This is an outrage. Is Google going to monetize searches you make?

I think this is great. Now you know how us euros feel everytime someone goes "HEY CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO IT'S THE BEST EVERRRR' and we can't watch it.

It used to be specifically mentioned as being banned in the FAQ banned memes list. It isn't mentioned on the current list anymore though.

I hardly believe Party Down is on the top of anyone's list of "most desired content."

I mean, here's the deal. Content on the internet has to be monetized or changed drastically from what it is now. People who work in print need money, people who work in television need money, people who work in film or music need money. And I'm not just talking about the fatcats, this includes everyone from top to bottom.

If the internet, as a medium, is going to absorb the content from these industries and vaporize revenue streams, then it must be monetized in some way. Hopefully we can use this as an opportunity to normalize costs, but at some point, people still need to be paid.

Get used to it, or watch content slowly decay (well, I guess there's always homemade stuff on Youtube, but hey, that needs ads, too).

Netflix takes care of the movies and "general" television content, Hulu takes care of the current, targeted network and cable content. That's why you don't have to choose between one or the other, they fill different niches.

Hulu Plus seems like a waste imo.

Dunno if they changed it/added more, but with 24 at least they had the five most recent episodes for regular Hulu viewers and 22 eps total for Hulu Plus. Yet Netflix has the entire catalog of all seven seasons (and the TV movie) for streaming and without the bullshit ads.

i don't like watching things on hulu. the commercial interruptions in particular make it seem too. . . commercial, and planned or something. netflix instant is a lot more what i'm looking for, though what differentiates the two i'm not entirely clear on.

actually, it could be that i just don't like a lot of the newest content on television, and prefer picking stuff from the past which i've heard is good and watching it straight through. piecemeal television watching is available to me on the television.

Not claiming it is. What I mean is they are starting to make content available day and date or close to it.

Not sure why you go on a tangent about monetizing the internet since there was never an argument that all content should be free on Hulu. Of course monetizing their content is ok (although they already had done that since the beginning due to the ads they put in their programming.)

My main issue is with them doing a subscription and then leaving ads in which were what was supporting Hulu before. They want to have their cake and eat it too which is just going to leave customers with a sour taste in their mouths. TV does it but TV stations actually makes content. Hulu just redistributes prior content.

Well, Party Down was cancelled, so it's kind of dead content now, anyway. But I was pointing out that this sort of premium service is going to become more common if you want the quality of content you are used to receiving.

We knew the Hulu gravy train wasn't going to last forever, and part of the move to Plus was getting the service onto set-top boxes and through other mediums, which people have clamored for since the day it first launched.

Part of doing that was no doubt cutting a deal with content providers which required them to charge for it. Much of Hulu is owned by those content providers, so even if the service doesn't make the content, it IS a conduit for it just like cable companies are.

Maybe it seems a little odd to keep ads in, but you still see far less than you would during a broadcast episode through cable. Perhaps it *is* necessary to subsidize costs, even with the monthly fee. Hopefully once Plus moves out of Beta, they can start to address some of these concerns (more actual customers = less need for ads).

I'd say it's the consumers who want to have their cake and eat it, too. If you want the content, you will be paying for it somewhere along the line. For my money, it's a lot cheaper than cable, and once the content starts to fill out, I'll have no problem dropping Comcast altogether (well, except for the internet access).

the internet is going to the shitter.

First Youtube started with deleting music and restricting content to different countries

then southpark.com started with the same shit.

now the piratebay is not updating with new films and stuff.

Man I do hope some awesome hacker invents some cool new program I can use to browse all things no matter where in the world i live.

I hate the internet censorship that is going on at the moment, fuck the entertainment industry.

The entertainment industry has to make money or it will cease to exist.

Google already has a (very good) revenue stream.
Yep. Somehow Google has found a way to get rich enough to pay for a gazillion servers, photograph entire countries and sponsor everything that moves.

It's also advertising that pays for actual, old-fashioned television.

Yet somehow this doesn't work for Hulu? I don't get it.

I subscribe to both Hulu Plus and Netflix. The content occassionally overlaps, but usually both services offer something unique. I subscribed to Hulu Plus to have access to the iPod touch app, because sitting at my computer desk is a little uncomfortable after a while, and I cant do anything else while I watch the show. Yes, it has commercials, but they are pretty short; for every 45 minutes of show, the commercials add up to about 4 minutes.

Do you still get ads when you get the Premium package?

EDIT - Ugh. Well at $10 a month it should be expected. Wish they had a $20 a month package without them.

First off I agree with you, but to be fair I think the entertainment industry should also try adapting with the 21st century.

Your other arguments are understandable, but this? Really? I mean really?

Once Hulu Plus stops being Playsation Plus exclusive, I plan on dropping my Netflix sub from 4 discs at a time to 2, saving me $12 per month, which I'll use for Hulu Plus.

It was? Man, it's really hard to keep track of these things. :/

As I've pointed out in about 200 threads before, don't think of stuff this way. A lot of people do, and the implied meaning is that GAF moderation is arbitrary or tyrannical or jerks. Besides the ones listed in the FAQ, there's no fixed list of memes people will always or never be banned for. Don't try to memorize things.

Just, when you post, ask yourself "Am I contributing to the discussion or making a joke that I honestly believe is funny?"--if so, you're probably fine--or, alternatively, "Is my post a low effort one-line driveby? Is my post racist, sexist, or designed to offend? Am I just posting the equivalent of 'first!!!!!'? Have I bothered to read the thread and give the same attention to other people's posts that I want people to give to mine? Am I trying to derail the thread? Is my post better suited for PMs? Am I pirating or advocating theft? Am I spamming?"--if not, you're definitely fine.

I think a few people were banned for "trannysurprise", but it wasn't because "tranny" is or is not offensive, it's because at a certain breaking point, when every second thread just has a regurgitated meme posted in it with no effort or variation and fifteen replies to the thread consist of "OMG THAT IS A MEME THAT I HAVE SEEN BEFORE! I ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR MEME!", there needs to be a pressure release so we can get back to actual conversation.

I don't personally think the situation is the same now, I haven't seen it in probably at least a year. Obviously I am speaking for myself here, I'm sure different moderators have different thresholds for where an individual trend gets annoying enough to respond to, but when people do get banned for more innocent or juvenile mistakes like that, it tends to be a very short (2 days-1 week or so) temp ban where the ban message is something like "Come on, get some new material man".

Hope this clarifies. No one should feel like they're scared or walking on eggshells when posting here and in my experience if you understand what I've just written the moderation decisions and policies generally tend to make a lot of sense.
