WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

So it's iOS4 day, and surprisingly few app updates have come out so far with support for iOS4. The only one I have on my phone that does it is Dropbox. Canabalt came out with an update with an iOS4 bug fix but no support for fast-app switching. Is there going to be a deluge of updates right when iOS4 goes live or is it just that everyone's taking a wait-and-see approach.

Not even the apps Apple showed off at the event in March or at WWDC are lookin' like they're going live. I guess Skype's said they're not ready yet.
Somebody on AppleInsider said Apple aren't even allowing updates made in iOS4 SDK to be submitted yet, but who knows.

I noticed this too. Maybe they're all waiting until this week?

We've been able to submit iOS4 apps for a few weeks now. They are probably not approving them until this week.

I'm sure we'll get lots of updates this week and next.

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about. I've gotten several app updates that include iOS 4 support. In fact, I just got a PaistBot update five minutes ago that said "Support for iOS 4". A couple of game updates like Space Ace said it had iOS 4 support as well. I think I got that one on Friday.

yeah, hoping most games get resubmitted soon as they need to be compiled in ios4 at minimum to get fast app switching support.

my guess though is apple probably has a massive submission queue to get through.. between regular app submissions, regular updates, and now devs recompiling for ios4.. things will probably be even more backed up than usual for the next month or so.

I have been trying for 3 hours on and off to get into AT&T support queue to explain my situation. I can't even get placed on hold because there are so many people calling. Amazing...

Yes. It sucks.

Before the iPad launched, apps used to be approved in less than 3 days. Updates would be approved in less than 24hrs.

Now, new apps take 7 days to be approved and updates about 5 days.

How do you know! There's no size restrictions are there? I wonder what game holds the record now, I just checked and the one by squaresoft is a lot smaller than I thought, I was sure it would be over 1GB, but it's only 250 megs.

In my defense, these games are using the old resolution. Games release for the 960x480 could easily see a tremendous size increase if all the assets are increased in quality/size too.
2GB is the current hard limit for any app. It has to do with the compression used.

Wow I just woke up to an email stating that my order was canceled. WTF, I pre-ordered on day fucking one? What gives? This is from the AT&T store locally btw

So I'm on the GM build of iOS4, is the one coming out later the same build? If not, will iTunes recognise the difference and prompt for the new download or will I have to do it manually?

nobody knows, chances are its the same ;)

what color are you guys getting?
Black with a black bumper.

I think it's kinda ridiculous that they are selling the bumpers individually. $30 for what is basically a thick rubber band? LOL. $30 for a whole set of colors seems much more reasonable.

Apple tax, son.

I hope its different because iOS 4 has been running pretty bad on my 3G. Mail glitches, Calendar, apps taking way too long to open, etc.

Yea it does but this is Apple we are talking about. I'm not going to buy a bumper, i think a few co-workers and i will probably trek to an apple store and buy a case and film for the phone and gawk at the long line for the iphone 4. One of my co-workers said she is going to be taking pictures.

Apple fans only have themselves to blame for constantly ponying up $30 for a plastic white dock and shitty headphones.

Yeah, it does run bad.

My wife still has a 3G and she is excited about getting my 3GS after I get the 4. 3G was already slow, but on iOS4, it's just painful. Feels like an Android phone. :D

iOS4 runs pretty well on 3GS, but the home screen scrolling isn't quite as smooth as it used to be. Was 60 fps, now it feels a bit lower. Everything else is just as smooth, though.

How are you going to get it at launch if you were still undecided?

Reserved the 32GB one :)

Is anyone getting the dock? I got one last time and I don't really feel like spending another £25 on another one. So I might just use the dick adapter

Yeah, though maybe its because mine is filmed almost to the end. My brother is getting this 3G but he has a fraction of the media I do. Out of 16G he'll prolly use 4. I'm pushing 14+ all the time.

The what?!

Question 1: Will the iPhone 4 ship with a SIM card? Just wondering how all that works. I've got a 3G right now, and I'm wondering if I need to head to an AT&T store to get a micro SIM for the new phone, or if it just comes with it.

Question 2: Can I keep my 3G (which I'm giving to my wife) on the current OS and still use apps that are iOS4 compatible, or am I forced to upgrade the firmware? I'm a bit concerned with all the talk of how iOS4 gimps the 3G.

Talked to Best Buy today.

They said they won't have ANY extra units for the non-preorders, so they aren't going to let people line up. I've 4th in the order sequence, so they're going to schedule "appointments" in 30-45 minute blocks with folks so that they can crowd control and also try to sell you on a ton of accessories. They already let me know about the bundle's they're going to be creating.

They should be calling for appointments tomorrow or Wednesday, once they're more sure of their allocation.

But, at least now I feel a bit more comfortable that I'll be able to pick up on launch day...

it comes with a SIM. When you activate the phone your number will be transferred over to the new SIM. At that point your 3G will be "deactivated".

yes, you would activate it on her line. If an app is ios4 compatible, but not required, then yes it will work on the 3G with ios3 installed. if the phone requires ios4 for some reason, then no, it will not work.

when ios3 launched, almost every game/app remained ios2 compatible because the update was a paid update for the ipod touches. Being that ios4 is free and will only not run on first gen devices (i.e. very old devices), I would expect a lot more apps/games now to require ios4. obviously she can still upgrade for free when needed, but my guess is you will start to see many notable ios4-required apps in the coming months, and then a ton more once the ipad gets it.

Pandora just got updated with iOS4 support BTW.

You can control it from the lockscreen and also from the left side menu on the multitasking bar. The iPod icon on the right side gets replaced by the Pandora icon.

Works pretty awesome I have to say

That's cool - the only people that have it easier are the people that are getting them shipped out directly to their address. With an appointment you have no lines or chaos to deal with.

Even with a preorder hold at the Apple Store I'm expecting some madness. As long as I get my phone I'm cool with it and I'll embrace the hype!

Great, thanks for the info.

You mean the shitty headphones that come free with the iPhone? :lol

If you're talking about the in-ears, they are pretty fucking awesome for their price and worth every penny, IMO. I use mine every day for hours and they sound great and are never uncomfortable.

Definitely. I've had mine for over a year and still love them. And they're in great shape after a ton of use.

Just got this puppy

Just wanted to mention:

If you have any intentions of selling your current iPhone then DO NOT UPGRADE TO iOS 4.0.

You will get much more money for your phone if its UNLOCKED. There is currently no Unlock for 4.0 and who knows when it's coming.

So hold off if you want to sell it.

Going to give my old phone to my GF when I get an Iphone 4.
