WWDC10 Thread of iPhones and iProducts galore

I got my 3GS on June 16, 2009. Am I eligible for the subsidized price? Before the keynote ATT.com said I'm eligible for iPhone upgrades for just $18. Now, I'm reading that they are only giving six months early which would be like Dec, 2009.
Dial *639# and see what you get back.

That's going to be what AT&T considers your upgrade eligibility for the new ones.

peoples screens never scratch because they rarely ever put it on a surface with the screen down. I bet we'll see some scratching on the glass back.
Not so. The front is in people's pockets with keys... the front gets dropped on the ground, etc.

Glass doesn't scuff easily. It takes a lot. I used to pull out a key and use it on the front of my iPhone to prove a point that screen protectors aren't needed.

So he's right on more than half of what he said.

With "worse UI" being a pretty subjective statement regarding stock android vs. Sense UI, which (as I understand it) you can turn off.

So I'm wrong on everything except the 1 thing that is subjective, but generally agreed upon as being better (HTC Sense vs. Standard Google) and the processor which is a newer model, even if it's the same clockspeed?

The way you worded that makes it sound like I was completely wrong...but even according to you I'm 3/5'ths right. :lol

True but I would rather they improve things that actually suck before improving the already good enough screen... like make it a better phone, put a better camera in it (is it better? or did they just add one for video chat?)
upped to 5 megapixel

Nexus one does hotspot.
is it supported by the carrier, or are you talking about rooting and "making it work"? because Sprint supports the feature specifically.

pxleyes said:
Nexus one has a better display, just .3 inches smaller.
no, it's .6 inches smaller. 4.3 vs. 3.7. pretend that's small if you want to.

pxleyes said:
Nexus one has wireless n.
doesn't matter. the wireless speed only matters in an internal network scenario, and I don't plan on using a mobile phone to stream 1080p content in my network. sooooo....yea.

pxleyes said:
such as? because looking at the chart, the Evo 4G appears to be clearly superior.

A random list. So half until you bring up other points. The Evo is not some master device, especially with hits absolutely HORRID battery life.

It's a much better camera.

5 MP... better than 3MP but that doesn't even matter: the sensor is better.

Do you troll the Evo thread, too, or do you just reserve that love for the iPhone threads?

Hotspot AND tethering are supported direclty in the Android 2.2 OS. How hard is that to comprehend?

Wireless n doesn't matter when the Evo doesn't have it and the iphone 4 and N1 do? riiiight

Ah yes, someone brings up an opposing viewpoint and they are automatically trolling. Seriously dude, fuck off.

I don't agree.

Also if I remember correctly from my rock minerals class in college, glass has higher density than most minerals (5.6?) and even if you rub the rock directly on the glass, the glass won't scratch.

This is how you test for streak, etc.

Also Apple's video shows them stress testing the glass and their test machine exerts more force than any drop could do. So yeah, I don't agree.

I'm pretty sure it's not regular glass. I put my phone in my pocket with keys, change and other crap in my pocket and I've yet to have a scratch on it. I laugh at people with scratch protectors ;)

the phone itself may be better with the phone antenna being built into the metal ring going around the phone.

Are you really acting like you are being anything more than a gnat in this thread? :lol

You've been such a downer the entire time, and you've made it clear you have no intention of buying the device, as you're clearly loving your Android phone.

What else would you call your constant activity in here but trolling?

after you root the phone. why is being completely honest about it hard for you to do?

oh wait...you're the guy that rolls every thread.

carry on. I'm done.

I really hope that the iPod Touch that comes out later this year has all the same features minus the phone bit (dual cameras, processor, GPS, mics, gyro, etc). I plan on keeping my Nexus One and using my unlimited data / free WiFi tethering for a 2nd gen iPad (which should have all the features minus the phone too) and/or a 4th gen iPod touch.

Oh damn.. didn't see that!

As someone who does have a shattered glass screen (which is a weakness of glass) on my iPhone.. that has me interested.

The screen resolution was a major thing that was making the iphone seem a little out of date when compared to other phones, now Apple can parade around that they have a kick-ass display and the consumer benefits with a cleaner display. Don't see how this is a bad thing at all, or how Apple could have spent the time/money to fix "things that suck".

And how convenient... you hold a phone in your hand and can look at it as closely as possible.

Sure if you like going blind so you can admire your tiny ass pixels knock yourself out. :lol

I've had my 3GS since launch and I checked upgrade eligibility before and after ATT announced they would let you upgrade early. The first text I got was that I wasn't eligible for an upgrade until 11/20/2010. The second text said I was eligible for an upgrade right away with an $18 upgrade fee.

Do they have those videos posted yet?

Did the Evo kick your child? Dear God.

My understanding is that Android needs some more babying in regards to battery life, but that you'll be able to get a full day out of the Evo as long as you're not constantly on 4G/3G, which seems to match a lot of smartphones (with the exception of Blackberry's). I know that my buds' iPhones seem to crap out after a full day's use.

Tethering is built straight into Android 2.2 Froyo. The Nexus One also seems to be the only phone that will be getting direct firmware updates from Google, so it'll have wireless tethering built-in.

oh wow my carier is going to rape me if i want the new one even though my contract is still running for a year or so …

Go try scratching a window with a key... "regular glass" is pretty unscratchable too.

As LiuKang pointed out a few pages back... why do people assume glass is easily scratchable? It's one of the few common materials that isn't!

Flo_Evans said:
haha. As many will tell you at certain sizes/viewing distances, extra pixels are wasted. A 10" 1080p HDTV viewed from across the room will look exactly the same as an SDTV.
Why would you be looking at a ten inch screen from across the room

Sorry to make this absurd request, but can someone post (in a nice list format) ALL of the new features that we know of? I'm sure it exists somewhere, but I'm on a road trip and all I have is my iPhone with EDGE. :(

I hope the fact that there's a steel rim means that the areas around the connector and headphone jack won't crack anymore. I can't even use headphones on my 3G anymore because they won't stay in

Worse UI
Worse RAM
Worse processor
No 4G
No front facing camera

...there are pros and cons to each.

agreed, just to clarify though... processor is exactly the same, one is for CDMA one is for GSM

Ok you must be acting dumb on purpose. NO ROOTING REQUIRED.

Fixed for those who only read what they see in charts:

^ This almost reads like a sarcastic joke.

why would you be looking at a phone from more than a few inches away from your face?

you don’t need to hold it inches from your face to see the difference.

jeesh. with some folks, apple just can’t win. I’m just glad they’re upping the standard for portable screens and we don’t have to pay more for it.

Good. I too got mine on launch day and the text I got five minutes ago says I'm eligible for the $18 upgrade fee.

with most of the iPhone 4's features + a few extra, that big ass screen, 4G/WiMax, and a truly unlimited data plan ($79.99 for unlimited EVERYTHING!)...gonna be a hard decision for me. I've enjoyed my iPhone, but the competition has clearly caught up in most appreciable ways.

right now, I think I'm playing ~$100/month for just 450 talk time minutes during the day, unlimited text and unlimited data for my iPhone. that's $20 less/month for me, similar service (maybe better/worse in my area? I'll have to find out), that big screen, Froyo coming soon, similar battery life...

damn. may the best phone and service get my $$$.

Maybe I am lucky with the battery, but I have used my Evo the same as my iPhone3G and had no problems with he battery, plus I was using 4G today to boot. Not to mention I can swap out batteries with the Evo if need be.

Yes, glass is very scratch resistant
The stress test only showed bending with a big surface area, not an impact on a single point. Which in my opinion would better demonstrate real world crash tests on glass.

The iphone 4 will scratch, the iphone4 will break. All given the right circumstances. Yet I also do believe these circumstances will be alot more extreme compared to the phones we have now.

Just realized something! AT&T is now changing from unlimited internet to a cap system and therefore changing your contract. Even though this doesn't effect current iPhone owners, it nevertheless allows you to opt out of your contract without paying the ETF. This happened to me with T-Mobile. They changed the price for text messages for NEW customers and even though it didn't effect me I was able to argue that they either offer me a complete upgrade on a new phone or I will leave and won't pay the ETF. It worked. I would highly recommend all of you to use this argument to get a complete upgrade price.

theres a video somewhere of scratching an iPad with keys/needles etc. nothing happens to the screen

I had a friend who's iPod was moderately scratched. He put it face down on top of a table that had a bit of sand on it. His nephew started playing and rubbing the surface of the phone over the table.

It didn't make the screen unusable, but it was enough to make you cringe.

To ask again, by looking at AT&Ts 3G coverage map, any area that is not blue will have absolutely no web coverage correct?
I'd recommend calling AT&T. if coverage is a concern, best to speak with them directly about it.
