WWDC11 Thread of iOS 5, Mac OS X Lion and iCloud

I like the flatness of the back. The only issue is it is so slick that it slips in the hand. Of course, that is what the case is for.

Aww, man. I got bottom-paged. Post #100! Whoo! Short of the long, put an LED on it and let devs access the volume buttons for non volume functions. I too would like a camera button. It's hard to keep steady while trying to tap the button on the screen.

What is he talking about? Tweets popping up via Growl notifications? Or an ability for 3rd parties to hook into iOS natively, like Android apps can?

well, no one can say for sure but it sure sounds like OS level twitter integration meaning potential to do the kind of stuff that was demoed in Mango the other day.

could also make it more seamless for third party apps to integrate twitter (you don't need to enter your twitter account info for each app)

and, yeah, notifications without having to use boxcar.

Probably a messaging service like bbm but using twitter?
I'm pretty attached to the flatness. Say what you want about the OS but when it comes to the phone itself I think they iPhone 4 may be the most beautiful electronic device I've ever owned.

Gruber was praising this stuff in Mango. I bet it's something like this. He wouldn't praise anything other than Apple unless he knew this was coming :P

My dad has an OG Droid running on the Verizon network, and he's contemplating switching me and my mom over to Verizon to get the whole family on one bill (me and my mom are rocking old-school Nextel phones, and my sister has a Blackberry on the Verizon network). My dad offered to buy me an iPhone, but I want to wait on the iPhone 5. Do the rumors indicate that it will have a faster processor?

New notifications system would be nice, but there is only things that I really care about: Apple exposing the API for quicklook and spotlight(with siri natural language integration) on iOS.

This is where the future will be at, this will get them the most bang for their buck, and I believe the time is right to do it now. I fear that they will focus on iCloud (which is also good and needed) this year and push off what I'd like done until iOS 6. *sigh*

Everything is pointing to this fall's phone being a more minor upgrade....

heh heh, he can squeak out a compliment for the competition if they make certain, clever design choices :)

he's also praised web OS many times, as well.

I guess that means cards are coming to iOS

(no it doesn't)

Haha, I was thinking the same thing - Nice to have you back Liu Kang.

Oh, and I am sad Steve is doing the Keynote, I was hoping they would pass on the torch.

You make me want to cry.
Aww, don't be so sad. There will be two models coming out within the next year: an iPhone 5 similar in shape to the iPad2/iPT4G, known as the Pro version, and an iPhone 4S with the flat glass back, known as the crybaby version ;)

They're probably allowing "accounts" to be added to the device so apps can interact with their data.

The wait for this is kinda killing me. Can't wait to see iOS5.

That's probably the cleanest way to do it. At the same time, it hampers newer stuff from taking hold. Not that I care. Just yet.

My big "wish" for the iPhone is that Apple announces that the iPhone will now be available on any and every provider out there including T-Mobile, Sprint and the one I need it on, Virgin. Even as a Prepaid option. I'd pay full unsubsidized price for an iPhone if I could get it on my cheap monthly Virgin $25/mo plan. I keep holding out for it.

I mean whatever next phone they release. The 5th iteration.

@Charred, "arrows/trackball/trackpad"? You can't be serious.

It's also really ridiculous that it still can't be officially unlocked in the US.

Reading Macrumors.com, it sounds like the iPhone 4S may be available on T-Mobile and Sprint.

Two out of three ain't bad, I suppose.

Faster processor, better camera... if the 4S has a 64GB option so I can stuff it with music and apps, I'll get that. I'm convinced that the iPhone 5 is just going to have the curved glass stuff and 4G.

I wanted to post my Universal Charred Product Failure Truism after his post just for the trackball line.

I hope he just threw that in there to see if we're paying attention.

Yeah. All I ask is a prepaid option. I don't care about the price of the phone initially. I just need a lower monthly price. I don't even care who it's on. And I don't mean a "special iPhone" version of a plan where it costs more for less just because I am an iPhone user. I want the same plan that all the other prepaid phones on that provider have.

I use Virgin currently because they offered an Android phone for a cheap price and a nice $25 per month plan that gives me more minutes than I need and UNLIMITED data and texting. UNLIMITED for $25. Even if I use the GPS or SiriusXM stream constantly. If this were AT&T I'd most certainly be getting some limited data cap. And I would hope that Virgin wouldn't decide to cap their data for iPhone users just because they feel that's where it's mostly going. Fuck that shit. While the Android is nicer than the last three phones I've used, it still doesn't compare IMHO to my iPod and iPad. I'd love to replace my iPod/Android combo with an iPhone.

Pipe dreams. It's taking way too long for the iPhone to trickle down into other providers. When Android is available on pretty much everyone and iPhone is only on two, it's kinda sad. I know most of it was because of the contract, so I am hoping that now that it's over it'll happen in time.

I don't know too much about each provider to know what requirements each one needs. SIM cards, antenna types, other stuff. So I don't know what Apple would need to do to their phone to make a single universal iPhone that could work anywhere no matter what. But I really want one.

Yeah, they should totally revert back to aluminum, the iPhone1 was so badass when it came out. Oh man, if it was all squared and unibody.. that would be so killer. OH MAN imagine when it gets cold, it would feel so nice to touch. *shiver*

LED/Notification revamp is the only thing I genuinely care about software wise. They need to move spotlight somewhere else and then have swiping left bring you to a notification panel. Make it seem like the homescreen is sliding away to reveal a little tray underneath with the App icons on the left and the information to the right of it. I'll take a lanyard eyelet too while I'm at it.

Jasoco, you should consider getting one from Canada if Apple doesn't start selling them unlocked in the US. you can get them unlocked up here from any Apple store.

maybe after the initial launch hype dies down, you can get one shipped to your place from ebay or similar without some crazy markup.

My cheap Android doesn't have an LED either. So if I get a notification, I don't know it came in unless I hear it. But I use an app that will remind me, plus I'm constantly checking it anyway so it's no big deal. Does the iPhone remind you of a message? Or is it one time only? I used to have two cheap Net10 candybar and slider phones that reminded me of messages every 10 minutes. Since then nothing.

I think it plays your SMS notification once 15 minutes later, but thats it.

Wait, what?

I wouldn't have a problem with them adding an led as long as it's subdued. Slow, pulsing, white light like the MacBooks would be ok.

speaking of notifications, I'd like to again say that iOS alerts fucking suck.

I can't count how many phone calls I've missed because I only looked at the lock screen. If a CNN or Sportacular alert pops up after a missed call, the missed call alert simply disappears (on the lock screen). Sometimes I assume that I haven't missed any calls when I have. Very frustrating. It's the only thing I can say I've been frustrated with.

Only reminds for SMS/MMS and missed calls (not 100% sure on the latter though). For any other app, it only reminds once and the notification even stops appearing on the lock screen.

Oh, and yeah, as Dreams mentioned, latest notification overrides any prior notification on the lock screen.

It really needs to list a few of them and tell you how many other notifications you have as a number. Then make it say "Slide to view" when there's a notification or more there.

I really hope there's actually something coming and this isn't al just rumor speak with no payoff. Because I'd hate to build up for huge disappointment for this one feature.

For the lock screen, I was thinking of something like a bar below the clock that just displays a small version of the app icon with a badge that shows the number of notifications for that app.

That's really all I need. I just want the lock screen to always show me all the apps that have a pending notification, not just temporarily tell me the latest notification.

Yeah. Nice Apple style monochrome icons for phone, text and other. No clutter. And only the most recent one as text on screen.

Then put access to the list under the Home double-tap screen above the running apps in the area that is normally a darkened image of the current application. i.e. that unusable space that is perfect for a list of notifications.

I mean the alternative is to copy Android and make it a swipe gesture on the status bar, but I think putting it with the running apps would be more Apple-like.

heh. I'm using a Nexus one now, after a brief foray into the scary world of BB, and it's nice sometimes to have a hardware control that both faster and more precise than touching the screen with a fat finger. *shrug* Maybe Apple could copy the back grooves on that new PSP Sony is making.
