As far as I know he finished the scripts for season 2 before getting the axe right before season 1 premiered
According to Wikipedia Matthew Chauncey was brought in later to handle rewrites and production. They actually stripped DeMayos formal writing credits for this season after a dispute

I think I remember reading he still had a part in this season's writing which makes me feel somewhat relieved.
I actually watched season 1 twice, which is rare for me to do for any show.
