X-Men Children of the Atom Vs. Marvel Super Heroes

How many Xmen and Marvel fighting games did Capcom make?

I only know of Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes

I also know Xmen vs Street Fighter and offcourse the popular ones like MvC 1-3.

I think Xmen vs Street fighter is the best if I am going by a consensus.

MSH is superior, however I'd welcome revisiting COA and it's character pool. I'd snatch up a remaster of either of those. I purchased a MSH cabinet a couple years back and it hadn't aged as well as I remember it (likely true of COA if I were to pick it up now), but it was solid.

The first Marvel fighter by Capcom, yeah.

You might be thinking of Mutant Apocalypse (which was a single plane beat 'em up from Capcom), maybe?

Ah, yeah. That's what I'm thinking of. I still think X-men vs SF is still one of the better vs series entries.

You also forgot UMvC3, but yeah.

Isn't that technically just an expansion of 3 and not a brand new game? Not really familiar with MVC3 in general, didn't take to it at all cause of the simplified controls

MSH is the better port and the better game, imo.

I'd get 'em both, honestly. They're different enough in feel and roster to be worth it.

It has a kind of simple charm that was a bit lost in later games. Funny because it was the most bombastic fighting game around when it released!

Even though it's already been decided, I'm also going to say Marvel Super Heroes.

Did Children of Atom even have Aerial Rave? I honestly can't remember.
Whenever I watch Spider-Man movies, I want to see him do air combos like that. I always leave disappointed when he doesn't.

I remember when I first saw cota in the arcades man, those huge characters were something else, and then super jump was omg status me and my bro were caught up, when we got a Saturn and we got that game it was the beginnings of a life long love of videogames! We only got to play on the weekends but we would invite all our friends over and have a huge tournament I won a bunch of tourneys and I mained cyclops but I won with a ton of different characters. It was really fun but massively unbalanced the down and fierce with cyclops (colloquially called the Kirk) would take out like 1/5 of your life alone. My older brother eventually beat me off of cyclops (we had a best of 7 match and he won it and I could never use cyclops again)
When msh dropped we copped a Meg cart and that other piece and started playing it every weekend I chose spidey, I wasn't as good probably because it was better balanced but we played that steady until xmen vs street fighter dropped dang that game was a classic too

COTA has my vote. The music and stages were amazing looking. And when someone unlocked akuma for me, it was a wrap

Same here, I'll never forget the way that the characters in MSH leaped out from the character select screen and their whole sprite kinda like flexed and rippled with energy as they jumped down. Just such a dynamic and action-packed little moment, the characters are so damn huge and packed full of energy and intensity, it just rocked my brain.

And then a few years later, turning the corner at a movie theater arcade and seeing X-Men VS Street Fighter, jesus, my two favorite things in the world coming together in one deadly dope package. They sure as hell did their market research.

To OP, you made the best choice with MSH, imo, but COTA or any of the other VS games are worth picking up someday if you have the spare cash, the whole series is great and each entry has its own little quirks that make it unique. I honestly prefer the pre-MVC2 games for just being a bit more streamlined and cohesive, as much as those games can be. MVC2 is just too much of a crazy grab-bag for me to consistently enjoy it.

Also, this image remains one of my favorite things ever:

ADVANCED VARIABLE HERO BATTLE. Capcom's entire arcade flyer game in the 90s was on point.

I really like both games, and I own both (Saturn import versions). I would recommend Marvel Super Heroes if you can only get one of the two. Read below for more random tidbits.

MSH uses 3M from the cart for additional animations and things like that. It doesn't really seem to help with the loading or the massive slow-downs the game is prone to. (There are a lot of colors and effects that seem to slow the game down; also, character size matters. Hulk vs Juggernaut will have more slowdowns than, say, a match of Spider-Man vs Wolverine).

MSH is, to me, more fun because it's more polished and streamlined than COTA and has that fun gem-based system. Aerial Raves are easier and make more sense. The soundtrack and character roster are slightly better in MSH, because you get most of the "core" Avengers, some really cool villains, AND you still get 4 people from COTA (Wolverine, Psylocke, Juggernaut, Magneto).

I love COTA but half the time I have no clue what the hell is going on. The "collision" system between characters feels off, the super meter has a two level system that I still haven't bothered to fully understand, Aerial Raves are a hot mess, and as someone mentioned you seem to be constantly dropping through broken floors which interrupts the flow of combat. I absolutely love the art direction and soundtrack in this game though; it's a beauty to look at and listen to.

Start with MSH. (Preferably the import since the US version doesn't take advantage of the extra cart power). But if you can afford it down the road, get COTA as well.

Nah, I thoughts Xmen Vs SF was way better than MSH vs SF. That felt like a slapped together sequel. I think I actually liked the first Marvel Vs Capcom more than the sequel though... I just didn't like the 4 button system much.

MSH had far better stages, music and characters.

Just imagine omega red or Cyber Akuma in Marvel 3. They would have been bananas.

Xmen vs SF had...Cyclops?

But I won't disagree on the 4 button thing. As someone who played MVC1 religiously at the arcade, the move was a proper headfuck and one of the reasons I never really got into MVC2.
