X-Men: Days of Future Past (First Class sequel)

It wasn't bad but there wasn't a whole lot of spectacle going on. It was just enough to service the plot and the scene.
Er, good?

Action for action's sake is anti-storytelling, and pretty much only a plus when the film has some spectacular choreography, but even then by nature it's being a detriment to the narrative.

The Singer Xmen films were more cerebral affairs (for a comic book adaptation). Bobby's 'coming out' to his parents was fucking spectacular. I don't want frivolous action getting in the way of that. I want character development then brutal, fast action like Wolverine suddenly going all wilderness on the spec ops in the mansion to punch me in the gut.

I didn't say anything about gratuitous action. A movie can have awesome action scenes and still have an intimate story at its heart (Terminator 2).

There is more spectacle in X2 than T2.

Nightcrawler White House attack
Raid on the Mansion
Magneto's escape from the plastic prison
Aerial combat
Stand-off against the cops at Bobby's house
Wolverine vs Deathstrike
Cyclops vs Jean
Magneto vs the soldiers
Xavier nearly brain-wiping every non-mutant on the planet
Jean stopping the water

Some of those are low-key, yes, but many are not. There's a good mix between 'intimate and brutal' and 'visually spectacular'.

I guess we just have different ideas of whats 'visually spectacular' because most of those action scenes are, at best, serviceable action sequences. With the exception of Nightcrawler's White House attack.

Well you could take it to Avengers level but it's mostly just noise at that point and completely removes any sense of danger.

What are some examples of scenes you do consider better than X2 ones?

Also, THERE IS HOPE FOR NIGHTCRAWLER !!!!

Singer used motion capture for the first time on the imminent Jack the Giant Slayer, and told MTV:

I definitely want to use this technology again, and I might even be using some of it in a different way in “X-Men.” I don’t wanna say how, yet, but I’m definitely using some of this technology on “X-Men” which I never used in any of the other “X-Men” films.

Are you talking about creating a fully CGI character in “Days of Future Past”?

That’s the thing I don’t want to talk about. I’m not sure. I’m doing research on it now.

[...]
Will we ever see Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler again?
I don’t know. We’ll see. You know … we’ll see.

That sounded coy.
[Laughs] Yeah, I know. I don’t want to … sometimes you don’t want to say “yes” or “no” to something that may not be a “yes” or a “no,” or anything. I haven’t decided yet, a few things. I’m still, you know — there are certain aspects of the script that I’m still toying with.

Who cares

Is Bryan Singer going to faithfully adapt Chuck Austin's nightcrawler origin? That he is
the love child of Azazeal and Mystique
cuz X2 kinda implied that they weren't and that Nightcrawler was sexually interested in her.

Can someone explain to me what the term "Days of Future Past" actually means? I'm not quite sure I understand the syntax used in that term. (Full disclosure: I only have a surface-level understanding of the storyline, if that has anything to do with it.)

If I recall, the whole story is a big mess of time travel and alternate realities and it just sounds cool.

It means something like society regressing, instead of progressing, in the future. E.g. mutant concentration camps in the future.

Dude, everyone except Cyclops was looking Mystique up and down. Nightcrawler had no idea he was checking out his mom's tittays.

I don't care whose in it just make it good that's all I ask, I thought the first 3 xmen movies where mediocre and First class was okay.

I haven't read the comics but if it's anything like the cartoon version then am down for this, already hyped.

Seriously, him killing the government agents was a cool scene, but the character himself? Dull as bricks. I can't even remember if he said anything in the movie.

Accent, and the CIA scene probably. I ended up caring about Nightcrawler more though.

Azazel was barely a character. Anyone preferring him to Nightcrawler in X2 is crazy for doing so.

I don't think a Christian superhero belongs in the MCU. But whatever.

dont' fuck with me okay

It's exactly the same confounding of tense used in "Back to the Future." Kitty Pride comes from the future to try and change it so from her perpsective the future has already come to pass.

Confirmed to be set in the 70s

Singer also goes on record saying it's definitely the biggest film he'll have ever made. Also Nixon is a character in the story.

Also..

Are you shooting the film in 3D and might you be using high frame rate?

Singer: I don’t think the high frame rate would make sense for this movie, but I will be shooting native 3D, yeah.

What the fuck people hating on Alan Cummings' Nightcrawler? Seriously?! I thought he was a huge fan favorite.

"One for every sin... so quite a few." :D

I have some really terrible news for you regarding one Steve Rogers.

First Class was pretty mediocre honestly. Definitely not Amazing Spiderman-level garbage, but it wasn't great.

Not really expecting much from the sequel.

How the fuck is "barely a character" not an apt description of Azazel? I liked his portrayal and everything and the dimension he added to the action but he was there to follow Kevin Bacon's orders. Does he even say a goddamn word?

He does, but not a lot. He felt more like the hired muscle than a full fleshed out character.

Oh god, this does mean more January Jones, doesn't it.

Hype lessened slightly.

edit: They should have had him starting to question Shaw's command and eventually go rogue and start flirting with Mystique. :P

What the hell? I'm not big on the whole Christian faith, but why should it be ignored when there are several heroes who have a strong tie to their faith?

I don't see why they should just be dropped, and that goes for any of them regardless of which faith is in question.

Azazael was just a poor substitute for not having Nightcrawler. Oh, look! A guy with weird colored skin, a tail, and he teleports! Good riddance. Give me Kurt Wagner back.
