X360 Zero Hour begins (pics inside)

So I just got back from the Xbox 360 Zero Hour event.

Ok skipping all the specifics. I'll talk about what I saw on Gears of War.
Sounds like the demos they've already shown of the game.

Just checked the xbox.com videos, didn't people claim that they wouldn't be able to get alot of people. It certainly looks like they did.

I just got back from the event - posting this from my hotel room.

Random thoughts:

Kaiju Big Battel was...umm...interesting. And entertaining. :)

Even with the event relatively empty, it was hard to get on some of the games. I wanted to try PDZ but I didn't wait to hover for a long time to try to get in...

I talked to a MS rep who said that Zero Hour faceplates would be mailed to us - they also had a sign up table (that I missed out on - it was closed when I got there) but I was assuming that was for guests, since their addresses would not be on file.

Dead Rising is entertaining - I think it'll be fun (maybe not worldbeatingly good but fun) when it comes out.

99 Nights is really pretty - it's a nicely done Dynasty Warriors clone - feels nice, fans of that series will probably really enjoy it.

Full Auto was also playable but I missed it.

The build of DOA4 was not final and had lots of slowdown and graphical glitches. It was fun tho, counter window felt tightened up.

They had a Windows MCE demo that didn't go well for them - the Xbox started freaking out while they were streaming HD video to it.

Ridge Racer 6 is nice - the interface and race selection are nice, but I wasn't really feeling it after playing the first race or so. Of course, this was also with the absolute slowest car class, so...

I really suck at PGR3. The in car view is nice, though...

They were activating free 3 month and 12 month subscriptions to Live - too bad I activated a 12 month card today, thinking I would need it :(

Gears of War looked nice, but the framerate and animation weren't so hot.

I glanced at Quake 4 as I walked by, it looks like the framerate hovers around ~20 at some points in the game.

That's about it...time for bed :)

Ah ok. Usual stuff.

So what is your feeling about the event overall? hyped, moderate or meh? :)

It's cool to be able to play these games early - I'm down with the swag, and this is how I'm planning on getting my personal launch console...

Today was kind of a low key day, I expect a lot more people will be there tomorrow as that is when the consoles themselves are going on sale. Might be hard enough to get on a kiosk that I may not bother trying to play anything, although I do want to give Full Auto a spin.

Oh yeah, they were giving out FFXI Atlases if you sat and played FFXI for a bit. I've never played it on PC or PS2 - it didn't look particularly enhanced over PC, although it would probably be better to get the opinion of someone who has actually played the game on other platforms :) It looks like a USB keyboard simply works on the machine, too, which is nice.

Speaking of USB doodads, they mentioned in the invite that if you wanted to use custom soundtracks via iPod or whatever, to bring a USB cable. Unfortunatley all the demo machines are using wired controllers, so unless you unplug the other controller, you can't get at the USB ports to plug in a music player. I brought a USB memory key with some mp3s on it, but it doesn't look like I'll be able to use it here...

I'll swing by and take a look, I haven't even realized that they had FFXI over there. Took me a while just to notice the Dead Rising and N3 demos too.

Not that it's anything new, but I captured a shot of N3 in action.

Look me up if you stick around after noon or at night, I wouldn't mind meeting some of the GAF folks. Try a few Staff folks or I really kind of look like my avatar pic.

Speaks volumes. lol! This seems to always happen to MS. Can't blame anyone but themselves.

They try too damn hard.

I tried to get some nice pics of Dead Rising and another of Ninety Nine Nights, but I fear the ambient light with N3 makes it hard to take a good pic. Those are below, forgive the slight blur, I've been awake too long and my digital camera likes to have long exposure times in here.

I saw Everyparty was there too, I'll have to go back there when I come back this afternoon.

I found the FFXI demo. Vastly improved graphics over current gen hardware, the shadows are really smooth. I can't compare to a PC version accurately, but easily at least as good if not better than the screens I get from my linkshell, and those guys run pretty high end PCs.

No, this was a demo given by Epic, they didn't let anyone else play it.

Wrong, after showing the demo on screen. They let people play the demo onstage. Guess you didn't stick around for that.

I guess not. I thought the demo was fairly underwhelming, so I didn't see the point - already saw the pretty graphics, anyway.

I want to slap someone for this "launch window = 1 year after release" nonsense, too.

Hey, I asked around for you but I guess I asked the wrong people...I left the event this afternoon and returned around 6ish, but the people I asked at the Xbox Live account management booth didn't know who you were...I had to find my friends who were already in the ever-growing line to pick up the machines, so I couldn't ask around any further...

More random thoughts:

After playing the Full Auto demo, I think that had it come out at system launch, it would have been the Xbox 360's SSX...in that it is a new IP that is very well executed and is quite a lot of fun - lots of potential there. I think I'm definitely buying it when it comes out, based on the strength of their demo.

I saw the Outfit there. Sorry Bish, it didn't do anything for me - felt like a 3rd person Battlefield, only not as good :( Was the build at Zero Hour a fairly old build?

Amped 3 is not as bad as I thought. It's not a great game, but it's a solid game that reminds me a lot of Cool Boarders.

Perfect Dark Zero has some seriously crap level design. Even with the arrows to guide you, my friend and I managed to get completely stuck on one level...without the arrows, it's just difficult to figure out where to go, but when they lead you to a dead end and leave you there, now that's just crap. (It is possible I just missed an audio cue - it was kinda noisy there...) The game is also seriously ugly now that I've seen it live...just because you CAN make something shiny doesn't mean you should. Even a wooden bridge was highly reflective...yuck. As far as gameplay, it seems competent so far...

I don't think they sold out of Xboxes at Zero Hour - that's just a hunch, though. I didn't stick around til midnight...I, like 99% of everyone else there, bailed as soon as we got our Xboxes.

Of course, I wasn't lucky enough to actually get a WORKING Xbox :( Mine has a dead HDD, but at least I can play without it until I can get it replaced (good thing we got memory cards at Zero Hour...)

Oh from what I've seen, Quake 4 dips below 20fps at points :p Then again, maybe it's been so long since I've seen a game running at 20fps or below that my eyes aren't completely trained for it...but there's like this one tram mission where wow, I think it goes down to about 10fps.

No worries! There were a lot of Staff working the event and I was hoping you would be lucky and find someone that knew me or my whereabouts.
