Xbox 360 dpad fix - did it work for you?

I just put my controller back together after using the sandpaper 'fix', and I can honestly say it didn't do anything at all.

I shaved off a ton of the plastic. My controller has a thinner plastic rim than this now (from the mod guide):

But the damn thing still sucks at registering which directions I'm pressing. The problem seems to be that it very easily rolls from one direction to another (from like bottom to bottom-right or what have you), and it doesn't work as I was expecting.

Is it supposed to work better than this? I can see absolutely no benefit at all from the mod.

I did it a few months ago and it worked wonderfully. Then I did it the hour on my new controller before my 360 died.

It was a great hour.

At least the d-pad is the only thing wrong with the 360 controller...

DualShock2 is the best controller ever.

Wish the Sixaxis wasn't a step back. Those new R2 and L2 buttons are horrible.

Sorry but the Ps2 controller is one of the best controllers ever created. How you could get a hand crap using that thing is beyond me. Theres a reason the design has been around for 3 generations of consoles.

if you say so. all i know if my hand is about ready to fall off after 10 minutes of using one of those pieces of junk.

Is it because Sony are lifeless and uninventfull?

I go with the 360 controller as the best. It fits, though it's only major flaw is the wonky D-pad, which can at least be fixed.

Everyone has their opinion dude. I personally have a problem with every single element of the Playstation controller so go figure.

It might be that Sony is more interested in improving the power and other features of the console than improving/changing the controller design in any drastic way.

Im of the mindset that games shouldnt be about the controller but rather the game itself. The Ps2 controller is comfortable and has enough buttons to allow for many different actions in a game. I also believe that if it aint broke dont fix it. Im guessing sony feels the same way.

Yea that to.

it's only $80 if you own a wired 360 controller...

This item is the very reason why I bought a wired 360 controller. You make it sound like a bad thing. Not to mention I can use it on all my emulators. It was indeed worth the purchase.

To answer this topic, YES. I modded all four of my controllers, and the d-pads work great. I was able to beat "Base" in Lumines and my friends and I can play fighting games without frustration all thanks to the mod. That is why I founded the:

the problem with the 360 controller was when you used the dpad it would hit that plastic rim and any movement from your thumb would make the dpad slide up or down making it shittastic sensitive. By grinding down the plastic the dpad could easily slide and lock (not lock but you know what im saying) in the direction you wanted to go...

i'm just pointing it out for the people that have no idea that the device requires you to own a wired 360 controller to be able to use it.

Yea that photo is a bit misleading. I havent actually bought this yet but I have all the neccesary pieces to make it work now. Im just waiting on Namco to finally get there act together and announce a 360 version of Tekken 6 or Soul Calibur 4. Once that happens this thing is going will be purchased. Maybe I can finally get some decent matches in on SF2 Turbo.

That's like saying Coke is the best tasting soft drink ever concocted because they've been around so long and haven't changed the recipe since the "New Coke" fiasco. It's all personal tastes. Personally I think the D pad on the PS2 controller needs more work. I don't like the missing middle and it feels too soft when I push it. It's far better than the 360's D pad sure and this adapter has me interested just because I've gotten so pissed off on loosing Street Fighter 2 matches by having my character jump instead of a fireball.

Yea I did the fix, though I did it with a knife and not sandpaper, worked like a charm. D-Pad is as responsive as any other D-Pad I've ever used.

bad example, coke IS the best soda around... people dont ask for a rum & pepsi...

I sandpapered the casing and adhered thin plastic to the back of the pad for shorter travel times.

The result is an incredibly responsive and satisfying click, instead of the usual mushiness in alot of d-pads. The modded 360 d-pad and those GelTabz things on my analog sticks makes for the best controller ever.

Surely they could do both?

This sounds like the "Nintendo is worried about innovation, not graphics" thing. As if the two concepts are mutually exclusive.

BTW, Sony made lots of changes to the PS3 controller. Unfortunately, none were ergonomic.

Does that work with PS2 joysticks that are digital, such as the Hori Tekken stick? I can't find the DOA4 stick anywhere and I don't really want to have a bunch of big ass joysticks lying around.

Maybe because the handles on the controllers are shorter than they should be, even for a person like me who doesn't have very big hands. As it is, those handles only get in the way and force me to hunch my hands over in order to reach the buttons/analog sticks/d-pad.

Theres a reason the design has been around for 3 generations of consoles.

That's like saying "there's a reason EA puts out yearly revisions of most of their games". The reason isn't always profound.

This thread is only good to remind the world that gamers are huge drama queens and need to be as bitchy as possible.

I wouldn't talk if I were you, considering how you complained that Final Fantasy 6 was too graphically antiquated.

I get hand cramps because it's too small.

I find the dual shock design works but it doesn't do anything paticularly amazing nor comfortable, the 360 pad is essentially perfect if you don't mind a shitty dpad and no waggle.

I do mind a shitty dpad, as for this, the mod worked to some extent but I don't think I sanded far enough, I was able to pull off harder spells in SOTN without much pain though.,

While I *LOVE* the Dpad on the Dualshock/Sixaxis, its by no means the best controller ever.

It's hardly ergonomic, and for someone like me with large hands, I get cramp after using it for more than an hour. Also, the analogue sticks aren't in a natural position, fingers will just slip off the convex analogue triggers (on sixaxis) - which is an issue on racing games for me as I prefer the full analogue control of a DC/Controller S/360 style pad triggers rather than using an anologue stick or button to accelerate/brake.

The 360 controller fits so damn comfortably in my hand, everything is just then in a perfect position for accessability, but if they could just make it a bit lighter (I actually like how light the sixaxis is) and improve the dpad vastly it would be perfect IMO.

Yes and no. It definately improved the pad overall, but it's still not ideal.

I've always thought the PS2 split d-pad was pretty much perfect, though, so obviously there is some kind of element of taste involved.

My big problem with the 360 d-pad is that the center-balanced, sliding "top" design always feels really sloppy to me. But hey, t's useable. It's not like it's Gamecube levels of terrible or anything...
