Xbox 360 dpad fix - did it work for you?

Unfortunately there is no best controller ever, each one seems to do something right and something wrong.

I find the DualShock to have the worst diagonal registering capabilities ever. Doing double diagonal inputs in VF is an exercise in severe frustration

YES!

The D-Pad royally sucked at registering some directions: I would press in a direction and then try to press in the opposite direction and NOTHING would happen unless I either pressed it hard a couple of times or pushed the D-Pad down a little and then tried again.

It does work much better now compared to how it was working before.

if you say so. all i know if my hand is about ready to fall off after 10 minutes of using one of those pieces of junk.

Learn how to use a controller.

The Dual Shock/Sixaxis D-pad makes your thumb sore. Playing SOTN on the 360 has been a great experience!

I shaved and it's awesome, it's like a whole other d-pad. I really don't know why it hasn't worked for you.

I can finally play Lumines, MK 3: Ultimate...and Castlevania with no issues whatsoever.

Sorry but the Ps2 controller is one of the best controllers ever created. How you could get a hand crap using that thing is beyond me. Theres a reason the design has been around for 3 generations of consoles.

not really.. it is a bit too small and the sticks do suck.. it is a good controller but far from the best.. I like the feel of the 360 controller better than the PS2/3 overall..

Lot of anger and irrational statements in this thread. Count me as one of those who don't know how tp use a DS2 controller. To the people launching critical attacks: Have you ever thought maybe, just maybe, your hands fall within the target audience of what Sony was designing for? I also thought it was too small and angular... and when I had to use the d-pad would develop cramps from joints being forced in directions they weren't supposed to be. My brief impression of the new pad is that it's 1000 percent better. I think I love the thing. Sixaxis runs circles around DS.

Back to controllers that are too small. The original DS used to put my hands to sleep after like 15 minutes of playing. When I upgraded to the DSLite, it was better. I could go about 30 minutes before my hands went numb. Then I started having severe chronic pain in my left wrist. Thought I injured it while exercising and just kept reaggravating it. But thankfully I had an epiphany one day: It coincided with my playing habits. When I went a couple months without touching my DS, I was pain free for a couple months. Thinking back, my pain free periods all seemed to coincide with when the DSlite wasn't being touched. Quite playing. Pain went away after a week. Sold it a month ago and haven't had any pain since. Back to doing full exercise workouts and the wrist could care less.

The moral: small controllers that bend joints in unnatural positions may not effect you, but for certain hand sizes, they're murder... and they suck.

EDIT: Never touched the d-pad on the Sixaxis.

I've always thought the PS2 split d-pad was pretty much perfect, though, so obviously there is some kind of element of taste involved.
Enlighten me, what exactly is the advantage of the split d-pad?

absolutely none, IMO its one of the worst features of the controller, that and the horribly unbalanced four shoulder buttons

Is it because Sony are lifeless and uninventfull?

Well, they did try to make a controller that was more comfortable:

But everyone cried because it looked a bit like a banana.

Priorities...

Yep, the Dualshocks have always given me thumb cramps even when I played the PS2 obsessively for previous years. I can't stand to go back to a Dualshock after using the 360's controller. I barely use the D-pad on the 360, I try to make myself believe that abomination didn't exist.

i cried because the d-pad and buttons weren't aligned. microsoft tried that approach on some of the sidewinders and frankly it sucked.

you'll note that microsoft also went back to the aligned layout.

i don't like the dual shock. the sixaxis is better... much better sticks and i can comfortably hold the pad when using motion control on racing games. still wish the sticks were concave. i still wish the handles didn't stick out so much. i still wish the stick was in the default position because in this day and age you use it more and i don't find the pad comfortable when using one stick and the buttons.

i see the dual shock design as having stayed the same for so long just because it's a standard. like qwerty keyboards. they are no where near the best layout of letters for you to type, but hey, everyone knows qwerty so why change it?

i was begging for them to change it for the ps3, but the banand controller fixed NOTHING i hated about the ps3 pad and added more things i didn't like... so i guess i learnt my lesson.

oh, by the way. you want an awesome modern d-pad?

wii classic controller.

that d-pad is phenomenal.

Sanded mine down. Helps a little EXCEPT for pressing left.

The left button on the d-pad doesn't even touch the plastic rim anymore, yet it still requires more pressure to register it than the other directions. Must be something internal.

Actually I had that for one of my controllers and I thought that I had ruined it by pressing on it too hard to get it to register prior to me sanding it down.

After sanding it and noticing the same thing you noticed, I started mushing it and pressing it hard, and it fixed itself somehow. I can't explain why it worked, but it did.

The real question here is: Why hasn't Microsoft fixed the goddamned D-Pad yet? Seriously, what the hell? People have been complaining since launch. Just grab a SNES controller and copy its D-Pad and you're done MS! How hard can it be?

I always wondered if this thing was purely a tactic by Sony to ensure that people wouldn't bitch when they re-released the dual shock and would instead be thankful and hail Sony as wonderful and a company who listens to the fans.

Yeah I think they should have fixed it by now. They don't even need to bring in a snes d-pad really. If they just made a tiny modification to the casing (to save people from having to sand it) then the existing d-pad would be solid if not spectacular.

I believe Nintendo's patent on their d-pad design only expired a couple of years ago (hence the odd dual shock and xbox d-pads) so perhaps Microsoft will adopt a normal Nintendo-style d-pad for the next console.

But I wouldn't think they'll bother this gen (which is a shame as the 360 controller with a wiimote or classic controller d-pad would own all kinds of ass).

Buy this controller. The D-pad is pure sex. But YES it is wired......I much rather be able to play my games then feel proud of being wireless while having my ass handed to me.

What happens if you get over-enthusiastic and sand the whole surround down to nothing, so there's just the grey rocker poking up into thin air? A sort of 360pad circumcision, if you will. Anyone tried it? Does that lip have to actually be there?

Please people, once and for all (I know this is a lie), when discussing the superiority of either controller don't confuse "I'm used to" with "the best".

Check the analogue stick and buttons on the 360 pad and you'll find they aren't aligned either. The stick points slightly to the right and the buttons to the left.

The sega saturn controller is easily the best controller ever made. 360 is the best controller with analog thumbsticks.

edit: oh, and when did this become controllerfight? I want to try out that sandpaper technique but i think i might be too lazy.
