Xbox 360 E vs. Xbox 360 S - Which one is better?

GAF, I haven't owned a 360 since I sold my old Pro in 2011, and I miss playing some of the games I own for it.

So which one should I buy? What are the differences between the two?

I'm limited to the 4GB models since I can only afford $200.

Honestly, if you're on a budget it might be best to pick up one of the newer elite models used rather than a slim or E model. Maybe check your local area for a used games shop with a decent returns policy?

Keep watching Amazon Warehouse Deals. You can find a Like New 250GB one for less than $200. I wouldn't recommend a 4GB one to anyone. Way too many awesome downloadable games and a few disc games require an install.

I'd rather buy a brand new system. I've had bad experiences with used systems before so I'd rather not go through that again.

I can just upgrade the HDD later on, and I have a 160GB external that I can use temporarily.

That is like the worst advise I've read here on GAF. Seriously? The thing sounds like a jet engine.

The one thing you have to ask yourself.

Do you need optical audio out? If so you take the old slim 360.

If you have a HDMI receiver take the 360 E.

The 360 E doesn't have optical out.

They are roughly the same size but the new one has one less USB port, no optical out, physical buttons instead of touch and a new style similar to Xbox One.

If you don't care about any of that, get the latest model but slim is the best model.

I don't use optical out or VGA, but I'm starting to lean towards the Xbox 360 S.

Does it run cooler than the E? How is the failure rate?

I'm not concerned about noise by the way.

You need to read more GAF threads if that's the worst advice you've ever read here. I could critique your post just as easily, though instead of sounds like a jet engine (some models of elite aren't actually that bad, the Jasper v4.1 in particular is much quieter than other models) I'd simply say something as out of context such as: 4GB Seriously? you can't even play GTA without extras.

The OP however answered with a good reason why he didn't want to buy a pre owned system.

No it doesn't run cooler, they both are at the same noise levels and failure rates are at normal levels for electronics since they introduced the slim.

Do you plan to get a Xbox One down the road? The E is similar in design to that so I think it looks nicer having them both together.

Other than that you are fine with the slim.

The S is for slim.. the E???

That is what the users tagged it. The S doesn't stand for slim as far as Microsoft is concerned.

I plan to get an Xbox One but not soon, at the earliest late 2015.

I think I'll just go with the S model. The extra USB port could be useful and I like the aesthetics of it more.

I also like it when my consoles beep.

I believe they are identical in terms of chips/hardware/noise/heat but the S has optical and some little trimmings. A noise test I saw the E was just almost indiscernibly a bit quieter but both are pretty much the same.

A week ago I bought one of the 4gb E models at Walmart 150 bucks (along with a 32gb usb flash drive for 12 bucks) It wasn't advertised or anything so ymmv.

S and E are pretty much the same price unless you find one on special somewhere. At Amazon the S holiday bundle can be found for 270 new and it comes with disc copies of Halo 4 and Darksiders 2 along with store codes for Tomb Raider and Arkham City. The E holiday bundle can be found for 245(right now at Amazon) and comes with Halo 4 on disc and also a Tomb Raider code.

I recently went through the process of choosing one and ended up going with the S. MS claims the E is quieter and runs cooler than the S. In all my research I found that to be bullshit. Perhaps it runs a little cooler, but as far as noise goes they were identical. In other words, both were pretty much silent except when a disc was spinning, and even then it was near silent. The real difference that convinced me to get the S instead was build quality. The E feels and looks cheap. And as others mentioned it's also missing features from the S. So basically MS is saving money when you buy an E model, but you're not. Buy the S.

It should also be noted that the newer model doesn't speed up the menus or make games load faster etc etc. They're identical.

It also gets rid of optical audio doesn't it? It seems like a step backward just so MS could save a couple bucks on the build.

It did get rid of optical, and a USB port as well, from what I've heard.

The other thing worth noting (for me, at least), is that the 4gb model S has a matte finish instead of that shitty gloss that Microsoft uses for everything now. That + a bigger hard drive = the best solution.

Yeah I noticed that in a video I just watched. I like the matte finish much more than the fingerprint and dust magnet.

I'll be upgrading it to this later on.

How is that brand compared to the overpriced HDDs that MS sells?

I honestly have no idea, but as a general rule, I'm not willing to give no-name brands a chance with something as finicky as a hard drive.

I can just upgrade the HDD later on, and I have a 160GB external that I can use temporarily.

You'll only be able to use ~16Gb of that external, official HDD upgrade costs an absolute bomb and I'm willing to bet good money that third party hard drives won't work. In the long run, the 250Gb model is vastly superior value, there is literally no point in buying a 4Gb console unless you like not being able to play downloadable games/any game with a mandatory install.

So I have no choice but to get the MS one... oh well.

I didn't know about the 16GB limit, I'll just use a 16GB flash drive I have lying around here.

Yeah I know 4GBs isn't enough for storing games, but it'll do for a few months until I can afford a better HDD for it. I don't plan on downloading anything on it at the moment.

I just can't afford anything more than $200, and I don't want to buy a used system. Even if I save up for the 250GB version, I still have to wait and save up for it anyway, so I might as well buy the 4GB now and have fun with it until I can afford a new HDD.

Just for clarification, the 250 gig S models now also have a matte finish. There are no more glossy S models.

Just FYI, aftermarket HDDs work just fine. I've been using them for years.

This is true as long as you don't intend to play backwards compatible games from the original Xbox. Those don't work unless you have the MS HD. Not sure of the reasoning behind that.

People that clone them tend to not copy the BC partition so if you include it BC should work just fine.

my Elite was never loud.

Get the S. If you have walmarts nearby you might be able to still find the White Skylanders 4GB bundle that was being sold for like $180 or less.

32GB is the new limit, I just installed a 160GB USB hard drive on my 4GB S this weekend.

Or if you're lucky, you'd find gems like this as they're getting phased out:

Hope its not a problem, but since I cant create a topic yet (and I think it wont even be really necessary), ill ask here.

I already played everything I wanted with my PS3, now I have a PS4 and am enjoying it and Vita. However, I want to play some games of MS / Nintendo and am thinking. Would be worth to sell my PS3 and get a X360? Or should I wait to get a Xbone or WiiU in the future? (Like in a 1 year and half)

The reasons have all been sufficiently covered in this thread, but get an S if you can find one. I wish the E didn't exist.

If it's just casual, catch up on stuff you missed, a used Wii should be cheap, and some might even have GC support. Not sure if I can recommend getting a 360 used though, but there's a sufficient library to look at, and a cheap 4GB 360S should be sub $150 now.

I bought two glossy 250GB S's right when they came out and sold my old systems. That's the best model, IMO. Hoping it holds some value for when I sell at least one in the future.

I'm also in the market for a new 360, and I'm going with the 'S' model because I want dolby digital out to my Astros via optical. Can't do that with the 'E'.

As for the post above mine, ignore everything he said. 32 gig is the new limit. He's also wrong about third party drives. There's tons of cheap, highly rated HDs on Amazon (250 gig for about 34 bucks).
