Xbox 360 Elite officially announced. GameSpot Feature

I like my 360, don't get me wrong.

I just feel like it's a big money sink. Between the Live charges, increased game prices over last gen, expensive controllers and absolutely ridiculous accessory pricing, I feel like I can never truly enjoy the console to its fullest.

There's always one less controller than I need, one more awesome game that I can't afford, one month over my Live subscribtion. I'd love to move it into the Living room for the better TV and seating, but oops, I don't have Ethernet in there. Guess I have to spring for the $129 Canadian wireless adapter. No, it's simply not going to happen. So it's my basement console. My oft neglected, dust collecting basement console.

The whole thing just screams "We will make this system profitable if it kills you!"

/end unrelated rant

Edit: Forgot to mention Microtransactions and the pretty much neccessary extended warranty.

I think that's a good point, and one I've made in the past. The HDDVD drive could still play DVD games. The problem with that idea is HDDVD read speeds aren't fast enough (~8x for DVD IIRC). As well, I'm sure MS doesn't want to commit to any HD format at this point. Hell, why should they when people are downloading some content at a much faster rate than they're buying it on both HD formats combined.

From the Microsoft megatons? thread:

That's a useless point.

First off - the South Park episode is free. People eat up free stuff. No wonder they're downloading it!

Put up numbers of something media-related on the Marketplace being downloaded anywhere near the numbers of that South Park episode AND paying for it. Good luck.

If I want a 20gigPS3, its more expensive then the 60gig PS3, but it doesnt have wifi? Am I losing my ****ing mind here?

WTF. So If I get the premium 360, I have to pay 88$ to get wifi. Cost 488$ 20gigps3 719$ no wifi+bluray. Or 599$ for 60gigPS3+wifi+bluray, but no gears or lost planet.

Is there any way I dont get my anus beaten to a pulp here?

Yeah well you can slap in a 100gb HDD for a lower price then MS is offering though.
I actually love the replaceable HDD on the PS3. Fantastic move by Sony. HOWEVER, it's not just the 100GB HDD. It's the hardware + service. Sure you can put a 500GB hdd inside your PS3, but where's the downloadable HD movie service? Where are the deals with Comedy Central, ADV, etc etc?

Apple has showed the world that it's not just about hardware. It's not just about software. It's about hardware + software. iPod + iTunes. Video Marketplace + Xbox 360 Elite.

And people talking about a missing HD-DVD drive are totally missing the point! MS doesn't care about HD-DVD, they just did that as an FU to Sony pretty much. MS cares about the Video Marketplace. This is the service that they're driving, that they control, where they control the revenue, the business deals, and the delivery system, etc.

Why dont you just buy a wireless bridge and plug it into that?

Why do people keep saying the PS3 is only $20 more when Sony stopped shipping the $500 sku?
I don't know either but you have to admit. Even at a $120 diff you get a BluRay, PS2, PS1, WiFi & free PSN. I'd say that's a pretty good value.

It apparently has WiFi, a detachable penis and hard drive, BLUE RAY, more power, and SixAxis. Apparently it is also available at every major retailer in MASSIVE quantities.

You know, you can use an wireless ethernet bridge. And they're all much less than the official wireless adapter.

In all honesty, i'm selling my Xbox 360 Premium on Ebay...you can still rake in about $350 if you add a few games (PDZero, Kameo, ect..), and then i'll buy this sucker the day it's released along with Gears of War (The Ps3 launch distracted me from getting this earlier.)

The bigger HDD is awesome, but i'd rather get a brand new console for aroun $120~ than sticking with my year old 360 and just adding on a new HDD for $179.

They'll be clinging onto that for quite some time. They are going to get plenty of mileage out of that one.

My Launch 360 broke after a year and 2 months into its life. Microsoft sent me a new one and I was without a system for two weeks. Did my world shatter around me?

Why would you use that as an excuse not to get the system? Is the thing bricking really that much of a terrible thing?

:lol :lol Holy shit. :lol :lol

I guess when you deal with MS, you're used to be ****ed over. There's no reason the 360 should be as shitty as it is, the Xbox wasn't. The 360 is gimped, cheaply and poorly made because it was rushed, it's as plain as that. Stop trying to defend MS's shortcomings. They do some things right, but the 360's design was not one of them.

Besides, MS doesn't fix everyone's for free. $160 for something that's their fault. You'd at least think the Elite would come with a towel.

Anyway people need to calm down. You have a very good choice here, either you get the "normal" xbox or you get the elite if you really want HDMI, why does it matter? You can buy the 120GB drive and add on to your regular 360 if you want more space.

Or you could get the PS3 for $599 for slightly more and have all of that.

It's a simple choice no need to complain or bitch, if you don't like it then don't buy them abd send a message to the company.

For me I've been wanting a PS3 anyway so it doesn't affect me in any way. Stay level headed and decide. #60 has the games at the moment so you actually do benefit.

Speevy said:
You're assuming these people want a PS3 to begin with. This isn't a short bridge to the PS3, it's a bigger hard drive and HDMI. At worst, it's a bridge to nowhere. No progress.

its a valid assumption considering that MS has been busing trying to obtain franchises that were popular on Playstation platforms

the bluray puts it over the top imho, making it a great value. That still doesn't make it affordable to the average household.

They'd better get it back out there, otherwise 80% of the talking points in this thread are moot.

If the 20GB PS3 is not available then that is true since the Elite wouldn't have any competition at its price. I was under the (apparently incorrect) assumption that the 20GB SKU was still available.

Well I wouldn't borrow that argument because the 360 has been pretty handily winning the "best version" wars over the past year.

The jury's still out on whether or not it's really been phased out. It's just really scarce right now. But that could change.

.

More than that it's a 'Platform'. You'll notice MS is always really careful to refer to the "Xbox 360 Platform"

That's why they're always saying the 'Platform' is expandable (ie they can add HDMI, add a blu ray drive if they wanted, whatever) They don't think of (and don't want the consumer really) to think of the 360 as this one box. It's a branding thing.

That being said however... this SKU is just weird, unless there's some master business plan thats just so ****ing genius I can't fathom it right now.

I'm sure as shit they'll try and get out a $249 core this holiday. 8 months of solid titles plus a $249 system would be a brilliant move.

How a $480 console fits into that.. I dunno. Other than to make sure the consumer doesn't think of the Xbox brand as 'too cheap' while Sony's pimping the luxury angle.

I know they're pushing the whole movie / tv show download thing, I just think it would have made a more cohesive vision to the consumer if they'd done this along with the IPTV launch.

Well ****.

I seriously dont know what to do now. I really want a 360, I just dont want to get D.P'ed for wifi. the 20gig PS3 sounds great for only 12$ more for bluray, but once again no wifi.

It sounds like 60gigPS3 or bust. I just have to suck it up and accept the loss of Lost Planet/Gears/Dead Rising, e.t.c.

Why doesnt the elite have wifi?

Does the damn 60gigPS3 at least have HDMI FFS?

After reading the interview with this guy, I can only laugh.

He said that this new sku is meant for the first time Xbox 360 buyer, that's why there's no transfer cable for the hard drive.

Funny thing is, its the current user base that has been screaming for HDMI and a bigger hard drive. Those people get to pony up an additional $500 bucks for the things that should have been in the console to start with.

HDMI is good, but it's way too similar to the current models. I don't think I'd need the massive hard-drive unless I wanted to get a bunch of TV shows and movies. Cooler and quieter and/or cheaper would be the ticket for a sooner than expected Mudhoney sale.

I for one have no issues with paying 29.99-34.99 for a DVD movie.

Barnolde said:
The more expensive PS3 has wi-fi, the Wii, DS and ZUNE have wi-fi, the most expensive 360 does not have wi-fi.

Sony gets away with the cables, because you can use your own $8 HDMI cables, not to mention you can use any HDD of your choosing. That's the advantage of not being proprietary, YOU actually get the choice, not an illusion of choice that MS deals you.

I pulled about 60' of Cat5 just so that could avoid gaming on wifi.

WOW. You do know that the service is starting in a months time right? Tell me how fast Xbox games began going online from launch. By later this year both Sony and Nintendo will have made big strides in their online service.

Well, it does finally show that Sony and MS seem to be more interested in the multimedia side of next-gen than the gaming side. Sony has so much riding on Blue Ray, MS has so much riding on the videos (and music is sure to come) on Marketplace.....it does seem that Nintendo is in a good position on the gaming side...hell, next gen we might even see a Hi Def Wii.

I have a Wii, and when I'm done waggeling my way into arthritis, I want to play Gears/Lost Planet/Dead Rising/e.t.c.

I am confused. The elite deal would have been a bonus, but no wifi breaks that deal into oblivion I guess.

Great. Just great.

If the best version was on a system that just came out and isn't as easy to develop for than the one that's been out since 2005, there'd be something wrong.

Oblivion is just the first of many superior PS3 versions. 50GB discs and a standard HDD will go a long way with next-gen. The best and most impressive PS2 games were not the ones that came out around launch, compare God of War II to Red Faction, the PS2's come a long way and the PS3 will as well.

That's the only sensible solution until MS drops the price on all three SKUs. As for me, I'll still be waiting for that price drop before I buy anything from this company. $180 hard drives, **** you Microsoft. I'm voting with my dollars.

give me good third party games that allow the gamecube controller as an option and you could call me a wiitard.

Mech Assault. October 2002. 11 months from launch.

By later this year both Sony and Nintendo will have made big strides in their online service.

I'm sure, but virtually every single Xbox 360 and PS3 game is somehow connected to online gaming or community. I don't suspect that will ever be true of the Wii.

No, It sounds like they are afraid of my money.

Is there any way to get wifi on the 360, without getting raped for that stupid cable-dongle?

People can't seem to understand the fault in this announcement.

When it comes to comsumer electronics there is one variable that kills all:

MARKETING. This announcement kills the small chance they had to win the marketing war against Sony.

360 Premium it was nice knowing ya! (people who want an xbox will get the Elite instead or will hold out since no one wants the inferior product. Just look at the 20G PS3)

Look I'm getting a 60gb PS3 and I'll use the wireless but as soon as I feel it's hindering me I'm buying a long cable to drag to my room. It's really up to you, both offer significant value, don't worry over connectivity to much.

I didnt read the thread really. Please tell me the 500$ PS3 has wifi. I can only assume as much.

I really want to play Lost Planet/Gears. :(

if you want the X360 then just wait (if you can) and hope for a price drop this year. The games are still the most important factor.

You're really making a bigger issue than it needs to be.
