Xbox 360 live interface, in need of an overhaul?

Not comparing it to the Wii which I haven't used, but as a store where you buy things you cannot return or even sample first - its a disaster. How many themes and crap are on there which have a simple text description?

Using the console and accessing games, demos and videos etc is great, but the other stuff should be modeled after a website or something.

I like the idea of the Blades... the problem is that big ass ad on the right side IMO makes it sometimes hard to focus my eyes on the actual text of the menu items in order to find what I'm looking for.

Agreed - the OS does NOT need to have ads built into it that take up valuable space.

They should make a promotional area where you can go to see what new things are available, not put those on the main screens. XBL itself is already one of the best marketing platforms in existence, no need to go over the top and start sacrificing the functionality of the system for advertising.

I just wish MS somehow applied the Video Marketplace organization to the "main" marketplace sections. That way you can instantly switch between different filters for content (recent content, all content alphabetical, most popular, etc.)

You just have to grab the channel with A + B

Thanks for letting me know. That would make me very happy.:)

I just hope if I could create a sub-channel for each - that perhaps one for Genesis VC, one for SNES VC, etc.

The Wii Interface seemed very clean, and intuitive.

The PS3 interface was the PSP interface - which is fine if you are used to it, and not a non-gamer.

The 360 interface has a combination of larger buttons, text, and blades. Things can get lost in the blades and sub menus, but I think the major functionality (watching movies, playing games, getting to live arcade) are kind of out in the open. (And I'd vote for the filters too - I dislike looking for new content on marketplace because I don't want to see new themes/gamer pics - I don't personally consider those "content"). ;)

My point is, my parents could get around the Wii system's menu easily. They could do the important things in 360 easily (and have to hunt for other things). They would be very intimidated by the PS3's interface, and not want to mess around with it. A bunch of text can be intimidating, with many sub-menus, and scrolling.

It depends on the audience, and their techno-savvy. I doubt my parents could copy a PS1 download to the PSP, but they can watch photos from their USB flash drive on the 360, and check the weather on the Wii. It's a matter of what's useful for the casual folks.

I like the live interface because in terms of its functionality, it's second to none. You can pull up the live blade any time during any game, access your friends, messages, invite to game etc, i love the full integration.

However, content-accessing needs to be improved. I don't see why I have to go on to a completely different page to see 'games' or 'media', why can't I quickly access it from the first page I see? Also, when I access the 'marketplace' I want it to feel more like a real, live store with ads, games highlighted, charts, more screenshots, pictures etc. At the moment it is just a list with boring text and an icon. Why not make it look more like a website and make it feel like a real, live store with things changing everyday.

The 360 UI is actually one of the cooler things about the system, to me, especially as noted just above, the Live and soundtrack intergration into everything.

The orginzation on Marketplace content is the only real problem, it's kind of redundant.

Wii interface SHITS on the 360 interface.

Hahahaha, no.

i don't mind the 360 interface too much, but i feel it needs to be more streamlined. and get rid of those goddamn fat bolded fonts already.

This is a gripe of mine as well. So you want me to pay 150 or so non-refundable points for some theme or pics, and no one could be troubled to spend 2 minutes creating a preview so I can see what I'm actually supposed to pay for? It's absurd; both to have to pay for pics and themes in the first place as well as to not be able to preview what's included.

They do show small previews of gamerpics.

Just before you purchase the pics, look at the top of the screen (the side with the banner) and it has the pictures that you will get in the download.

That's how I chose my Dead Rising & Lost Planet pics.

:)

Marketplace seriously needs an overhaul. They should make it look like well organized websites so it is easy to find what you want. Access to marketplace through the computer for downloading would be great feature.

Interface on http://www.xboxlivepipeline.com/ is well categorized. There is no confusion in where to look for the contents you want. Plz change it on the Xbox 360 or just add "Download to My Xbox 360" button on this website. :)

Sure it's a preview. If you had a microscope.

Yeah I feel that the 360 interface is overly suited toward SDTV users, and as an HDTV owner I want them to put a wad more stuff on the screen at once. I'm sure Capcom will agree with me - SDTV owners STFU! :)

Okay I'll try to bullet list this to simplify what I typed, it was late and I likely rambled a little.

Still it seems many of you agree with my first point.

1- Utilize HD resolutions when designing the menu, allow a toggle switch that defaults to huge font size if playing at 480i/p. This wouldn't onlly be text though, sure make the font size half as big , but I'd also like it if every graphic used in the design of the blade interface was displayed at it's actual pixel size, including the blades themselves. So in 720P or 1080i/p there would be bigger , crisper images used with smaller text. It'd just make the whole thing look slicker.

2-Allow the user to customize the way downloaded content is sorted- the existing list, windows thumbnail style or perhaps an individual blade for each piece of content

3-Add fast forward and rewind capability to the music player

4- streamline the blades/menu options so there is only 1 selection for marketplace instead of 2 or more

5-Add something similar to an ID tag for games/movies/cd/cdr that would tell you the title of the disc inserted, future games could even have a picture and/or music like the psp/ps3 do, existing stuff would just have the name.

----
Also, and this is my my opinion not some stated fact, I like the XMB on ps3 becuase it IS formatted to properly utilize HD resolutions , it does the whole ID tag thing AND it's marketplace uses real money. I may not like using the thing for online games and don't own one myself yet but based on time spent with a friends it atleast looks slick.

As for the wii, it's just a really simple interface, everythings right there you just point and click, then bam.
---

Of all the things I'd like in the 360's menu one thing I don't care at all about is a web browser, a comprimise however becuase I know some people feel they should have a browser to compete with nintendo and sony, is to simply have the ability to play flash video by means of connection to PC or entering a URL. See unlike the other 2 , microsoft assumes naturally that you allready have a PC with internet and adding internet to the 360 would be superfluous , I agree with this. So they simply release a tool that allows you to drop in your favorite youtube videos or flash cartoons by essentially copy pasting the URLs and when you turn on your 360 a new tab would be under media that would have that list of favorites , you'd simply select a video and boom.

I have issues with the options you choose for each. Could your parents send a message to a friend they have on the PS3? Could your parents plug a memory card that has photos in to their 60GB PS3 and view those photos?

Basically I'm trying to figure out why you choose copy a PS1 download, vs. something more basic, when for the other systems, you choose pretty straightforward items.
