Xbox 360 Preview Program announced

I'm expecting them to update the dashboard with 1080p support and re release the system as a tiny, $99 box to compete in the streaming space.

Agreed. This is where they are going with it as a windows 10 streaming box.

If this happens, which is smart then MisterX will finally get one right.

External HDD support. That's all I want from the 360 at this point. Tons of sales with plenty of 3-5$ titles on top of the monthly free games...and I have no room for all of it plus my years of buying arcade games and dlc, and I have the largest HDD available on the market to buy on top of two 32 gb thumbs. Unless there is some reason this cannot be done due to system architecture give it to me MS.

I'm still holding to my call that they'll make a discless 360 that costs $99 and adds BC to the Xbox One. But it could just stream games to one as well I guess. Same thing.

Yup, just got my invite.

Edit: A great... now my old white 360 makes a jet engine sound even when it's turned off... Didn't know that 360 had any sleep mode capability?

Windows 10 on 360 is definitely coming. Hell it works on Raspberry Pi.

But the raspberry pi still has more RAM than a 360... The os size on previous gen consoles is ridiculously small, I'm not sure win10 is designed to fit in such a tiny space when even budget phones have at least twice the space. It would be impressive though.

Uhhhh....maybe?

I don't really think this is necessary for a console that is literally in its tenth year. We should move on, and so should MS.

Complete opposite of how they treated the OG Xbox. This is good, 360 still has potential, massive game library and a huge userbase.

I'm thinking there's a bigger link/picture to this. Funny how they announced this shortly after the announcement of purchasing Xbox One Games with Gold on the 360.

Think there may be some major Xbox One to Xbox 360 (and vice versa) features coming soon. Streaming games possibly?

Windows 10 on 360 is definitely coming. Hell it works on Raspberry Pi.

W10 only supports x86 and ARM, 360 is PowerPC so hell will freeze over before NT runs on there.

Really like this idea, they need to come up with an idea for a little box which plays 360 games, runs universal apps and can create back compatibility by streaming to the X1/PC.

I bet MS are kicking themselves for building the 360 around PowerPC. It's really shafted them now.

It's going to get cold over there...
"NT was the first purely 32-bit version of Windows, whereas its consumer-oriented counterparts, Windows 3.1x and Windows 9x, were 16-bit/32-bit hybrids. It is a multi-architecture operating system: Initially, it supported several CPU architectures, including IA-32, MIPS, DEC Alpha and PowerPC."

Yes, it's an old NT but you said NT, so... :-P

lol what?

You aren't basing this on the size of both devices right? Because I am sure 360 has very very tiny amount of RAM.

Hmm, I am not sure about that. It definitely has when running a game but I don't see why it wouldn't use more than 32 mb RAM if it is in "OS mode". You only have to have the kernel running with a compatibility layer for unified apps. I am sure apps are allowed to use more RAM.

I think the x360 is 512MB and the Pi is 256MB/512MB depending on the version you have. Not that it means W10 will come to X360.

EDIT: Got an invite to take part too, time to blow the dust of my 360 controller.

I'm enrolled.

I'm kind of hoping an update bricks my 360 and they send me a quieter, hdmi enabled replacement.

Some of us actually like video games.

Looking at the upcoming 360 release schedule, it is tempting to ask "What video games?".

The platform is already just about dead save for what are inevitably going to be stripped down versions of (Some) multiplatform games.

This seems a somewhat pointless feature to add to a console Microsoft has already all but stopped supporting with major releases and I seriously doubt there will be any significant firmware updates coming for it either tbh, but whatever I guess.

I would love to have streaming from Xbox 360 to Windows 10. I have tons of games to buy / play on 360 but I want only one console under my TV. I'm fine playing Wii U on the controller, It would be great to be able to do the same with Xbox 360 games !

I suppose they could take out the DVD drive but the chipset is unlikely to get smaller, Sony hit a brick wall just the same I think, main reason why they are both still quite expensive.

Not hitting the high notes with those initial preview features.

If Microsoft actually put the whole digital store on sale like Steam does, 360 would be excellent as a digital only device but they do the same bloody sales, Rockstar again ffs.

Pretty sure FH2 was released for the 360 recently, so it really hasn't been abandoned by MS...

Got the invite and enrolled last night. Why not? Here's hoping for some nice improvements. As others have said I've got a huge backlog on 360 so I'll still be playing that system for years to come, even if I'm not buying new games for it. Some kind of streaming with X1 (either way, really) would be cool.

How is this thing still going? This would be like if there was still SNES shit coming out in 2001.

Got an invite, but I'm wondering what it will include?

Would be cool if they add every game that you own to the "My Games" tab, where the uninstalled games are greyed out and the games that are installed are colored.

Are you able to invite people?

At this point the manufacturing costs for the xbox 360 are probably extremely cheap for Microsoft. Being cheap, and also still a quite capable media machine Microsoft is wise in keeping it around. If a miniature version was released similar in size to a mac mini I would likely purchase one as I love the xbox 360 controller and still enjoy it's game library. I do hope they could still fit in a dvd drive because its really easy to find cheap discs nowadays, or maybe sell a thin external drive.

What would be incredible is if they could somehow take a minaturized xbox 360 and give it compatibility to be connected to the xbox one via usb 3.0. Giving the xbox one backwards compatibility. This way the xbox 360 mini wouldn't need a disc drive as you could pop discs into the xbox one but have them play through the external 360 hardware.

Geez just kill off last gen already.

When they did that early with the OG XBox people were super pissed. Cant please everyone I guess.

I have 1.5 years of stuff left in my backlog so I really appreciate this, plus the unknown free games with gold that will be given out over the next year may expand that even further.

The limited amount of system RAM is not an issue if you have to start the streaming service full screen, like all 360 apps. Then there's 496mb available, more than enough to run a streaming game receiver app. Would be great if that's actually the plan! Most people with X1's would be able to stream their games to a second screen through the 360, I'm just hoping they support Windows 10 streaming as well...

I guess this is how we will get our backwards compatibility.

Smart move.

Who knows if they will allow streaming to Windows 10 machines?

How much life does this thing have left? Goddayum.
