xbox 360 to be sealed shut?

the new X360 modchip is a spiderlike device (like the searchers from Minority Report) - they'll auto attack and mod the console.

That said... unmoddable? Haha. I think most modders can live with a hole/opening

an unmoddable console. it's the unicorn of the industry.

They should just put one of those blue inkpacks that blow up in your face when you rob a bank.

I agree, modders don't care about a console without a case, or a big hole in it. But ink like this would explode and ruin everything inside.

But that's seriously jacking up the cost.

I say that if you're going to be serious about it, rig the whole magilla so that no matter how you try to open it, you destroy some vital component rendering it useless.

I can't imagine this being true as it would cost a bloody fortune to keep replacing the shells when repair work is needed. You would need to pry the shell open without damaging it to be able to access the internals. If there's a way to do that, it'll leak out.

I don't buy it, while I think it will be hard to open the unit up and figure it out , keeping piracy at bay for a few months , talk of sealing the whole system shut seems a little bit unfeasable becuase then you'd have to replace the whole damn thing if something broke.

I think a more likely solution would be building the final internals in such a way that tampering with them yourself or even a modder doing it would easily break important components. I mean aren't modchips normally just a few wires soldered onto various parts on the mother board so that instead of booting normally they load a fake bios up that plays everything while bypassing the region lockout ? make it so if you take the case apart the 2 things that'd have to be soldered togethor get to far apart and there isn't enough room to place a chip anywherewithout taking the entire unit apart.

I would also think that MS has prollybuilt a more secure custom OS for 360 so doing any soft mods will prolly never happen.

This won't stop the modders. I'm sure they're willing to toss out the old case and have 3rd party folks release replicas.

The environmentalist will do their best to rape Microsoft if this happens. This is worse than Divx (the disposable disc kind, not the cool software kind).

In a country where the Centennial Olymipics were being showered with guys running around with dove-shaped kites instead of having actual doves fly in the sky because it would be 'inhumane', how the hell will this pass?

Of course if it does pass, good for them. I just don't see it happening though.

"The case is going to be sealed up tight using current fireproof safe technology."

seems like a waste of money to actually fireproof the unit for the same of having it sealed... why not just use a normal case, but add a little photodiode + capacitor or something to fry the bios if you open the case? that'd probably be a LOT cheaper than a fireproof case.

Furthermore, to make it even more hack-proof, they will not offer or have any ability to upgrade your dash. There will be no savegames so it's going back to the arcade era. There will be no LAN or wireless connections. It will ship sans a DVD drive. For fear that someone may be really smart and use the IR port, they will ship it inside a steel metal safe.

Well i still think this is BS but i think some of you are missing why its a good idea.

You're never gonna stop all the modders, and im sure it would still get hacked, but doing stuff like this deters normal people who may have modded their xboxes just cause it was so easy to do.

Just by making it so that you need more than a screwdriver to mod your console MS would reduce piracy a lot.

seriously though, MS has always embraced piracy. It worked great for them on the OS market. they'd rather have people use pirated windows then linux.
And piracy worked great for getting PS1 marketshare. I bet modded xboxes contributed alot to the popularity of the first Xbox, witch eventually pushed the masses.

I doubt 360 will have *really* tough protection, not like Gamecube had this gen anyway.
The only thing i can see holding off pirates for a while is if the format ends up beeing something with larger capacity then regular dvd (hd-dvd?)

pffttttt!

Sorry, couldn't find a better thread to post in. Since I can't post my own topic yet.....

AnandTech cracks open a retail xbox360 to peak inside.

X360 still has those USB ports. You could always have soemthing devised thatuses the USB port as a means t disable the security measures.

If it's digital, it can and will be hacked.

i think live will be too crucial for me to mod the 360, i dont want to risk getting booted off again. not only that but with a xbox modded you have pretty much everything you need

so you have to pry things off then unscrew 18 screws just to get to the motherboard? Thats defintely a lot harder than xbox.

True, but in terms of general hardness...well in this day and age of cordless screws....

Tell me how that would stop someone from getting inside it though?

Instead of 15 min fucking around trying to open it, it now takes 30min. Bottom line is, it's not sealed shut.

LOL @

"There is no mechanisim to open it. Microsoft is willing to replace entire units if internal parts go bad as long as the box is never hacked."

I don't see why everyone is laughing.

This means if something minor goes after the warrenty is done ... say needing to adjust the laser assembly or something ... you're S.O.L.

No matter what goes wrong, you will have to replace it.

Did you even notice that the original article is from may and has been discarded as bs many times since?

But well, :lol i guess

To be honest, the purpose of my original post with the anandtech link was purely informative (its nice to have a look inside the x360). Even though we have already seen the innards when one of the mod groups opened up the (stolen) dev kits, this is a retail/final box we will have in our homes.

But then I remembered that comment (bs/or true, still funny in light of things)....

Sorry, but I just can't get over how fucking big that power supply is...

Wait till you have it in your hands. It's *incredibly* heavy. Like it's 100% lead or something like that.
