Xbox Games with Gold for June

Only game I'm mildly interested in is X-COM, but I doubt that it will even be for me given my lack of interest in strategy.

Bland month.
I'm not into strategy one bit, but I still loved X-Com. Give it a shot, trust me. It's a special game.

Smart on Ubisoft! Give The Crew away, and then sell people on Wild Run. I'll definitely look into it!

I'll probably end up buying it. What I played of the core game on PS4 is fun enough and I am looking forward to getting back into it (I dropped PS+, so have not been able to play).

Definitely a solid month. XCOM is outstanding, even if you're not a fan of the genre. Looking forward to finally checking out Goat Simulator and Super Meat Boy. Not much interest in the crew, but I'll at least check it out.

Too bad my XBOX Gold sub doesn't roll over to getting the games on PC via the Windows Store. I have like 9 months left on my sub and yet I have moved my XboxOne to the back of the closet to make room for my PC.

You can try out the Wild Run stuff within the core game. I recommend doing that. It helped me decide that I was not interested in those events.

Wow, the Crew... 18 month old former AAA game. Pretty solid.
Will get that and XCom.

Can't wait to hear July because I'm buying in on the rumored RDR announcement @ E3.

I recently dropped PS+ recently after many years as a subscriber in favor of Xbox Live (I used to have both, which ended up being silly), and this month isn't making me regret it one bit 😂 Xcom, Meatboy, both games I've wanted to own for awhile.

Solid month. Goat Simulator is a perfect GwG game - dumb as hell, worth playing, but hard to justify purchasing. The Crew falls into similar territory - it's not good enough to buy on sale, though still has some fun in it.

Pair it with two of the best games of the 360 generation, that's a damn good month.

You know I'm starting to believe the speculating around a surprise GWG at E3 too.

Ybarra, GWG xbox wire post etc are hyping it up to celebrate GWG's third anniversary, but none of these games really celebrate it in a way it should.

1st Anniversary (June 2014):
Dark Souls
Charlie Murder
Street Fighter 4 (additional game)

2nd anniversary (June 2015):
They announced that from July onwards they will be releasing two games a month on XB1 instead of the usual 1.

This third anniversary just feels like a normal month unless they have something to announce at E3. Maybe another surprise GWG, or an announcement they're increasing the 360 GWG's to 3 a month?

I hear you. It just felt like a giant waste to me and all I need is one of these services anyway. I chose to stick with the one that gives me my money's worth and then some.

I get your point, PS+ has been pretty lackluster for a while (though I have been pleasantly surprised with Tropico), but Xcom and Meatboy have both already been on PS+, so... if you're a long time plus subscriber, you probably already had both.

Can't play Xcom on PS4 though...

I'm actually happy to see Xcom there, never got round to playing it last gen, now's the time for it to shine!

Great month, I don't have any of the games! I passed on The Crew in favor of FH2 but would like to see how it plays, plus there should be lots of GWG people driving around to race with.

The Crew is a pretty shit game, but if you're going to play, I can't recommend picking up the Wild Ride expansion enough, it adds/improves on a lot of what's there. Still expect quite the slog the first couple of hours before you get to anything enjoyable.

X-Com is an amazing game tho, plays great with a controller, and great to see it added to the list of backwards compatible titles.

Super Meat Boy is pretty great.

Goat Simulator...it's a fun little tech demo that will entertain for half an hour or so.

It means it will be when this goes up..

Are you sure? From my understanding, Enemy Within was only released physically on consoles, and it's a different disc from Enemy Unknown. It looks like a Deus Ex situation to me, where the Director's Cut wasn't compatible when the original edition was

GwG has really matured, very good job Microsoft. I feel like this upward trend of GwG and the relatively stagnant ps+ just demonstrates a relationship of quality of free games and market trend of the console though

I could see them going the opposite direction. Shift to three XBO games a month, but cut 360 to one a month. Maybe axe 360 entirely, and make all previous 360 GwG accessible to any new subscriber.

Own SMB and am currently on level 4 of the last world (what a fucking pain), but own any of the others. Good month. Been wanting to try X-Com.

How does The Crew compare to Forza Horizon 2? I usually don't like racing games (which is why I haven't played Forza Motorsport) but I love open-world games, and Forza Horizon 2 had a great mix between open-world game play and racing game play. If I liked FH2 will I like The Crew?

I'll definitely try out Goat Simulator.

Super Meat Boy is one of the best games ever made, so that's a great addition to GWG.

I have zero interest in Xcom but that seems like a solid addition based on the game's reception / known quality. Another good addition but not one I'll play.

Did you happen to ever play the Test Drive Unlimited games? I would put it in that category but still a sorta beast of its own. It is a racing game in many respects but it has some HEAVY RPG elements. Think of your car as a character and you level it up by parts you get as random "drops" for doing small stunts or events on the map.

The game is pretty amazing once you push through the initial learning curve which is what killed it for many people. When you start out the car drives like a turd and it turns people off. If you can level it up a bit and upgrade parts you will start to love it. If you find a single player mission too hard GO GRIND parts for your car. The game fails so badly at giving this info to a new player. If you are a Horizon fan then you are sort of in the wheel house but the scale might be too much at first. Take Horizon 2 times 50?? The map is that big.

Visually the original game was bad.. really bad but they released a very nice update a while ago that brought the visuals up while leaving the 360 and PS3 versions in the past since they were the ones holding it back originally.

It is a tough game to recommend outside of .. if you are a little patient.. like the open world type of game and do not mind having about 60000 things to do on the map once it opens up. It is a Ubisoft game so it has that part of the map built in but man once you level up it is so fun to play.

My advice would be to watch some streams (if there are any) and see if it works for you.. the game does MANY things right but it took a while to get there. Those starting out now really have no idea how rough the game was. Also get friends into it.. the game shines driving with friends... I have spent HOURS at a time driving with no load times with friends using it as a chat room, those of us who were around for the TD Unlimited games can relate to that. It is not a perfect game but if you let it get its hooks into you it will grab you.

Can anyone explain why every month people fake the GwG and Plus line ups? seriously it's not the most exciting fake like the NX or Medevil ones, something that "break the internet" which is understandable why someone whould fake those, here it's just dumb and pointless really.

And that's a pretty average month, just because Plus is worse doesn't mean we should applaud them.

Oh wow, thanks for the write-up. I went ahead and checked out the achievement guide for this game on xboxachievements.com, which states:

"Although the game does not have any concrete collectables per se, some amount of exploration is still required. There are 242 “landmarks” that you must enter which much like the skills, are scattered through every corner of the map. You will also need to locate and hack into 30 Data Stations located within the heart of various states and cities, as locating these allow all skills within the area to be visible on the map. Finally, there are several “hidden cars” that can be built but you will have to locate and collect the wrecked parts for these vehicles hidden within the world, as 20 parts are required to build a car and only one car is required for an achievement."

Your write-up and the above paragraph together are selling me on the game heh. I hope a significant amount of those 242 landmarks are unique/beautiful. I really love the idea of having a huge map with a ton of collectibles to track down.

That's not gonna happen IMO, 360 games will be cheaper as they're older, and it gives 360 owners a bigger backlog which might sway them into picking up an XB1. Plus they're pushing BC, having BC be a requirement for GWG forces publishers hands, it doesn't make sense to lower it to 1 a month.

Yup, I really don't get it, only show how awful those services has become that people celebrate this joke of a month.

2 90 metacritics are a joke of a month?

and The Crew is the type of game I think a lot of people want from GWG, one they aren't exactly rushing out to buy but they wouldn't might playing it for free. Ryse and Knack is another example. At least that's why i'm happy with The Crew

To add to the above, I love collectibles in pretty much any open world game (Sunset Overdrive, Watch Dogs, Sleeping dogs, GTA, etc...). Forza Horizon 2 was great because it was this beautiful racing game where you drive Ferraris and BMWs and you just so happen to have a big open world like in GTA or Watch Dogs.

One of the biggest strengths of Forza Horizon 2 was 1) the music / radio stations, and 2) car challenges hidden throughout the open world (I.E. take this Corvette and drift 30 times in the rain in 120 seconds). Hoping The Crew has those - either way U2NUMB has sold me on the game.

This will be quite a nice GWG month for me - I'll end up playing 2 out of the 4 games (Goat Simulator + The Crew). I can't remember the last time I played any GWG game. Usually when there's a fantastic GWG game that I'm interested in, I've already bought/played it (like Sunset Overdrive, Walking Dead, Super Meat Boy, etc...).

The crew is an amazing game... push through the first hour and it will hit.

Pro tip.. DO NOT play this as a normal racer. Play it as an MMO.. grind your car up and I mean grind. Replay the same jump skills over and over for better loot and level up your car. This is very important as the cars control like a hot dog covered in lube until you can add parts. It gets so much better control wise as you put in the time. THEN go play the single player.

Also do not forget to just drive across the country.. game is MASSIVE.. I hope it gets more fans as it deserves it.

You just unsold me on this free game.
