Seems like wasted money considering it's been on Sony's stage multiple times and the brand is kinda connected to PlayStation. They did this with FFXIII and I believe the PS3 version vastly outsold it.
But hey, gotta do what ya gotta do.
Curious why people consider it a "waste of money."
It's not a black and white "I do this to outsell the other guy."
I'ts typically:
1. Increase my SOV of a given title
2. This game is big enough to sell hardware to new consumers, and I want these new consumers to consider my platform when they purchase
How does a deal like this not fulfill those objectives?
Console marketing teams have money to spend, and goals to reach with that spend.
They can spend it selling the emotional benefits of their platforms, lifestyle marketing, etc, they can spend it pushing 1st party software (but typically later in a cycle that's toward existing users - you're money isn't working as hard for you to sell halo 6 to new consumers to buy an Xbox if you didn't buy an Xbox for halo 5, so that budget is probably coming from a different software bucket), or you can identify a 3rd party title that will convert new or lapsed gamers to upgrade to a new platform and these deals give those consumers visibility to your particular console.
To me, a deal like this is "there's no major FF on this generation. This game can sell 3mm units. A large % is from core FF fans who were waiting for a new FF before upgrading consoles. If I give Square $3mm, they will match my $3mm and we will tag $6mm with Xbox and now FF will sell 4mm units because of increased awareness, and that's an increased potential conversion rate to Xbox as the platform lapsed FF fans pick up when they upgrade because that's the level of awareness they have of the new title for Xbox.
I don't know why people get so up and arms... It's really simple as that in most cases.
