xbox live accounts are a nightmare

I'd love to see the split between people who renew with Live cards versus people who are automatically renewed at $60.

I'm sure the split favors us. But you said "only", which is the point of contention. XBL subscription deals show up on the coupon sites that "normal" people go to every day. My sister sure as heck doesn't ever read gaming forums, but she knows that when her kids' XBL sub. needs to be re-done, she starts looking for deals. I'm assuming she isn't alone.

Console warrior...ing isn't winning you any favors in this thread

Yeah, I own everything there is to own minus a great gaming PC. I don't "warrior" anything.

$50? who on earth bar a few idiots pays the full amount, especially with the amount of crazy deals on nearly year round.

this is just people using a figure to bash a service, quite pathetic.

it's pathetic as it's used in a derogatory/insulting manner.

by all means quote the rrp, but don't forget to mention that you can also find subs as cheap as $30 or $12 a year if you take advantage of the month gold for a buck deal.

i didn't bring it up. i only responded to what has become an annoying an entirely predictable attack. it's tiresome.

I switched my Gamertag to a different (disconnected from any other sites) email back when the hackings started really getting going. I can't remember the steps I had to take, but it seemed simple enough. Is this another thing that's different depending where you live?

No, that's an easy thing to do. Simply link it to a new email address that isn't associated with XBL already. Anyone can do that hassle free without talking to support. It's merging accounts (on pretty much any service) that usually has to involve support. After the PSN debacle I did exactly what you said with my PSN, iTunes, and XBL accounts. Piece of mind and all that.

Yep. That was the "problem" here.
-OP had an account attached to an old email
-OP got a Windows Phone
-Instead of signing with the old account, he created a new one..along the generic Gamertag with it
-Got an Xbox 360 again, signed with the old account but wanted to change it to the one he created for the phone
-Didn't work (because the two emails are attached to different Gamertags); so he created a third email-account (Live ID) to put in the second account to free that email, to use that email on the old account
-Seems that at some point the OP tried to do it multiple times, and the service locks you out as a security measure when you fail multiple times

Though that's also the part I don't get. On one hand it seems as if the OP is trying to get the accounts (as in Gamertag, achievements and everything) merged with the old one; but on the other is seems as if the OP just wanted to change sign-in IDs/emails; which is just the email/password and is quite easy to do as long as the new email is not attached to any Gamertag.

To date, Live is the only service that has still charged me after I removed automatic payment renewal.. for two years in a row.

It doesn't surprise me that their account management is shoddy.

Yep, they still send me e-mails about how they tried to charge my card even though, I took auto-renewal off. Micro$oft sure loves their fans, by which I mean money.

sliding block puzzle is a nice description.

So how did you do it? Can I safely create a 'dummy' live account on live.com, or will that automatically create a gamertag for me? Do I have to do it through hotmail.com?

and do I then have to wait 30 days after creating the dummy account before I can transfer to it?
Ugh, let's see if I can remember the steps.

I had a Gamertag attached to an email address that I didn't use. I wanted to attach that Gamertag to my current email address. What I did first was create a Live account with my "real" email address. I then logged into Xbox Live with that Live account, but that was a mistake. Logging a Live account into Xbox Live's website automatically generates a Gamertag. Now I had two Gamertags: my "real" gold account which was tied to an old email address and this new silver account that had automatically generated upon logging into Xbox.com.

The "real" account couldn't be transferred to the good email address because it already had already been associated with a junk Silver account.

Good gamertag - old email
Bad gamertag - good email

I created anotther Live account.

Good gamertag - old email
Bad gamertag - good email
No gamertag - junk email

Now for transfarring.

Bad gamertag to junk email
Good gamertag to good email
No gamertag to old email

I found out how to do this through MS customer service. This is literally their prescribed solution to the problem. As I understand it a transfer can only be done once every 30 days, so if you screw something up then you need to give up and come back in a month.

Madness.

TL;DR: you need extra Live accounts with no Gamertag association for shuffling purposes.

Is it actually possible to keep buying the One month of Gold for $1 deals and cancelling them before they auto renew so that you only pay $12 in a year for Xbox Live Gold?

Just don't put a credit card into the XBL data and it can't auto renew. I refuse to give the Xbox my credit card number. It's like a shady cousin.

I feel like I'm in the minority for not having a shitty time with the auto renewal thing. 2 years back I called them, and they were super helpful and got it done in like five minutes, and I never dealt with it since. I'm not downplaying those who do have problems, I'm sure it is hell. I just have no way of relating.
