Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) News and Announcements Thread - 2012 Edition

I'm really beginning to hate Microsoft's rigid "release slots" for XBLA, because I am pretty sure that is the biggest reason we still don't have dates for Jet Set Radio, and even Joe Danger.

It's quite possible Jet Set is done right now, including the PS3 and Vita versions, but Sega wants to release all the versions at the same time, so that means waiting until they can get an available release date on XBLA, which will be god knows when. Summer of Arcade is starting up soon, and it's likely they won't release it during that event, so I'm now thinking it might just slip into August. :/

That's a pretty massive conjecture on your part. It's also quite possible that JSR isn't finished yet.

I like the original Toki, but I would be happy with just a port of Toki. Something about the way the characters and backgrounds contrast each other in HD games like this really bothers me, not sure why. I always feel like it's watching a video made using Colorforms or something.

It is to a degree, but are you going to suggest that XBLA release "slots" haven't caused such a situation to occur before? It would sure seem probable to me.

Furthermore, wouldn't you agree that the entire month of SOA is "blocked off" in a sense, to releases like Jet Set? The rigidity of these release slots just seems unnecessary, and it's not like publishers/developers haven't found Microsoft's general rigidity regarding XBLA games in general quite irritating for a long time now. It's been commented on for years.

I agree. I am waiting for the JSR Vita.

The ones I checked earlier were all 460. Checked again and some are 400, some 460 and others 480. I'll leave it a few hours until they decide to leave them like that or choose a set value for the 3.99£ ones.

Yeah on the console the ones ive checked are at 480 in the uk, wonder if its different around the eu stores.

I was going to get Table Tennis, but is the load time really that bad from disc? I'm thinking it's cheaper to get a disc than to buy digital, and my hard drive is pretty full already.

Just a little reminder: If you have Dragon's Lair, don't forget to play the game today to get that Anniversary achievement... unless you already cheated the clock and got it that way.

Was hoping Wreckateer would be last to launch so it didn't hold all of the other goodness up :(

Lots of 1200 points games there, expected for most but was hoping Tony Hawk would be 800 points.

I had a feeling Dust was going to be the last SoA game to be released. Ugh almost two months of waiting.

Btw does anyone know if Hybrid still has the weird configuration of using the right stick to shoot? If it does, it will be only Deadlight and Dust for me.

Wish Mini Ninjas Adventures wasn't a bloody Kinect game.

Overall though, I'm looking forward to the games over the next couple of months. Even if I wish Spelunky was on there.

Ow man August 15th :( Gamescom week :P.
Well will play after that week than :)

well the 2 games I wanted on the GoD sale were PoP 2008 and Bionic Commando, for an "error" they sure stayed in his post without correction for awhile

guess my next purchases will be Deadlight and Dust

Regarding the whole JSR fiasco, that reminds me of Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes. Consistently botching potentially high profile releases because they can't plan for shit is as annoying as it is financially unsound.

This and Team Meat's woes make me hope they'll change their management of the platform by next gen. Right now, it looks like a clueless clusterfuck.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. How were the releases of Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes "botched"?

I think XBLA could do with more "themed" sales and release schedueles, really. Offer deals on early purchases, offer special incentives for buying certain games and such in a months time (They already do this on occassion with Xbox Rewards)... just keep the things flowing.

They're making the proper steps (There are more ads for recent XBLA games on the dashboard, and the recommended games occassionally are really solid suggestions), but there just needs to be more of it. I'd love to see Search-by-company for games (For XBLA and XBLIGs), for one example.

Guardian Heroes + Radiant would have been nice to see grouped into a Saturn Appreciation / Classics REBORN! Promo or something.

Now that's niche!

Expanding the Niche, one person at a time!

As much as Guardian Heroes inspired Castle Crashers, I'd probably also have tied it to that somehow... as simple as getting Behemoth to run a playthrough stream / hold a mini interview speaking about it, to as complex as sticking a castle crasher into the XBLA version as a bonus playable character, haha. (Or the inverse, buy GH, get Han and Nicole as free DLC for CC!)

Considering CC NEVER STOPS SELLING, that might have been pretty crazy effective.

Just give me a Resident Evil 4 Deal. Even if its 400points off, I'll feel better.

Yeah, would have been great to offer some incentive for people to buy them all on release, or something. At least it's grouped with RE 6 later this year as a special edition though, right?

Whatsup with the GoD games stating their price in MSP? I thought you could only pay with real moneys?

I've got 4700 msp left to spent before the end of the month. Can I buy GoD games with it?

Yes. You could always change the currency to points at checkout.

Bump it up to 240msp and you can get a PinballFX 2 table. Those are nice to have in your collection for short pick up and play sessions.

RS got a firm release date 2 weeks before it actually released and had like zero promotion. GH was made available in one territory (before being taken down IIRC) and finally released 3 weeks later. This doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the way they manage an otherwise awesome platform.

The release date being announced two weeks before then pretty much zero promotion is the norm for most XBLA games these days. Sad but true. The way Microsoft do things makes it hard for companies to plan promotion since they rarely know when their game is coming out till the last minute (relatively speaking).

so trying the sonic adventure trial, it disconnects from live as if theres an update, but doesnt download anything, and have to exit to connect to live, whats going on?

That's happened to me with Trials, full XBLA, and Indie Games before as well. Seems to eventually clear itself up.
