Xbox Live: Are kids really this racist?

Guileless said:
I like to kill them with kindness. Tell them you're going to pray for their souls to become less twisted by hate, and compliment them effusively. Eventually they are just so stunned they stop. For real effect, just pray right there over Xbox Live to your deity of choice for the soul of "Budsmokaaa420" or whoever else is giving you problems.

There's another way to go. After a profane tirade, ask him "you kiss your mother with that mouth?" They'll inevitably say, "No, I kiss yours!" And then you can say, "My mother's dead, so I guess you're a necrophiliac. That's really interesting." Then go on and on asking him an endless string of graphic questions about the practical difficulties of being a necrophiliac in 2006.

I need to drop out of college, go to Best Buy, apply for a job, buy an Xbox, sign up for Xbox Live, then go buy a nice comfortable chair and play some Madden with you, sir.

It's just the reality of the internet or should i say the reality of humans.

Humans are pretty much all playing a role and want to LOOK right. But at the bottom of themselves they are perverts, they are violent and discriminating.
When there's no barriers like on the internet, people are showing their true self. This is something your girlfriend need to understand and actually stop getting bothered.

I figured you had her playing some FPS, but UNO? WTF?

I was showing the wife around Live at the weekend, and we were stumbled into a game of UNO where the host was recounting his weekend to a friend. A French girl joined the group and asked if they would stand the game, our hero retored with "How about you suck my ****ing cock?"

It's laughable, but quite pathetic.

Theres no accountability on the internet. You have the choice to be respectful or a complete douche bag. It'd be nice if the internet was a utopian society but such a thing will never exist.

I've met some total wankers ont he internet and it does hurt my faith in humanity. Sometimes I want to initiate my own third impact (fans of Neon Genesis might understand).

i had a similar experience when i played counterstrike for the first time, except that it was at a "lan party" (there used to be this place in my hometown that had about 20 computers set up in a network to play various games.) Anyway, some redneck **** kept say "nigger nigger nigger" everytime he made a kill. I eventually figured out who it was and kept pking him just for being an idiot. I usually dont' do that sort of thing but in that case, i made an exception.
What you should have done is walked over to the redneck retard, pulled him out of his chair by his hair, and beat the ever-living snot out of him until he was all out of teeth. That's one way to end racism.

This is why I love John, and also Nokonoko

The ****tard shouting on Xbox Live are the reason why I play only with peaple I know in person. I don't see why I should play with idiotic losers I would ignore in real life. And sadly, 85% of the world is made by idiotic losers. It's not Xbox Live's Fault.

I'd wager that said redneck was already devoid of teeth.

I expect this sort of stuff in games like halo 2, but I just (ignorantly) figured that uno would be "safe".

Granted, I havn't played much of Halo 2 online(Alot of Battlefield, Rainbow Six, and Splinter Cell, though) but I havnt ran into much racism online at all(and i'm black). I rarely hear the word 'Nigger' but I here 'Nigga' alot--and mostly from wannabe white kids.

I see more Euro gamers bashing America/Americans more than any thing else, though.

For awhile idiots, not just kids, turned me off to XBox Live all together. But now I have come back and met some cool peeps and honestly, if you put mostly GAFfers on you list, you should have some good games in your future. Without the threat of idiots, with the exception of DM of course.

HALO2:
my team (me a Portuguese-Canadian, friend a Spaniard-Canadian, friend a Mexican-Canadian and another friend a German-Canadian)

against some random Red Neck team somewhare in rural or sub-urban United States

the US team was calling us the N word just because we sounded different then them,
2 of my friends took insultingly, 1 took as an opportunity to fire back with my own poddy mout, my 1 other friend stood there and listened to the comedy fest.

so in the after match lobby I just fired back and told them to make love to his cousin wife and to use contrecaptives to not give birth to any Brian Peppers and bla bla

............

then it was my team against a team of Brits.

The Brits thought we were Americans and started calling us ''dumb Yanks'' and and crap, we Canadians aren't safe from anyone!!

Wait... why would a white girl care if she's called a nigger?

What are you retarded? Hate is hate. I don't anyone likes being called a faggot, even us straight folk.

Not to mention you jumped the gun and assumed she was white. These kids (and really it's not just kids, adults are on Live doing the same thing) revel in the ability to be stupid without consequence. They lost at life.

Yeah, the public game situation on Live, as well as any internet-based game (most online computer games come to mind) can be pretty disheartening because you end up meeting some of the most ****ed up individuals whose sole joy in life (apparently) is to throw the entire ****ing insult book at you. I occasionally cuss online, but not at people nor with rapidfire consistency. Certainly, I don't insult people.

I think people should be allowed to record with a function in the Guide blades any incoming voice and a confirmation of whose account it's emanating from to send in with complaints/feedback. Once some mother****er is caught with incontrovertible proof of racism, extreme profanity, etc. in a public game they should immediately get their account banned for a week and then for a month and then *poof* their account is ****ing banned outright, forcing them to pay another $50 to make a new account. They should be notified and sent the offending voice clip(s) along with explanation of how they ****ed up (as if it wasn't obvious enough). That would set most of the ****wad community straight right away.

The 360 controller needs an electrocute button to rid the world of narrow-minded racist assholes like that. Peter Moore, hook us up!

You realise such a feature would backfire and cause ONLY shitheads and cockwads to remain on Xbox Live, yes?

I've never seen such thing. Then again, I never got called a faggot until very recently.

Thank you anonymous brat!

I thought MTV and rap culture diluted the term 'Nigger'. Can't blame the kids really, they are being exposed to this term in all popular culture.

Hmm.. everyone complain about voice chat versus random people here but in nintendo threads it's scolded (not quite possibly the write word).. odd..

Oh, and to the ignorant screwtards that are insinuating that racists and open-minded people are divided up by Republican/Democrat lines, you're guilty of the same sort of broad-brushed bigotry as the people you're professing to detest.

Hop off of the Howard Dean ignorance train for a bit, mmmkay?

Here's a cause; two people that don't understand how someone could have visceral reaction to casual bigotry. And I'm sure they'll never see the reason. Thanks for making the world a better place guys!

People aren't naturally selfish twats, elsewise such a thread wouldn't exist. But humorous reactions relate directly to confronting repressed thoughts and social taboos, so offensive language will inevitably be contagious without moral "adults" in the community to shun (see: flame) dicks.

I hope things change over the next couple of decades as gamers as a whole age, but I don't expect it. Hell, I have friends in their 20s that go out of their way to be as racist as possible when we play DoTA. Infuriates the hell out of me.

In any case, it is a problem, and not listening isn't a solution. Companies that run these online services really have a responsibility to keep their tubes free of such hate speech, but outside off mmos, I really don't see anyone taking proactive steps.

**** THAT! That's a ****ing copout. People are still responsible for their own actions. The N word is old and has been used the same ways for ages. To use it as an insult is still a ****ing insult. **** THOSE KIDS! It's called showing some respect to people and respecting yourself instead of being a total ****wad. Grrr.

I wonder how bad it's gonna be for PS3 online since Sony says it's free...which, IME, means a greater percentage of ****wads online with nothing to lose since they aren't paying for the service? Of course, I spent maybe less than 30 hours in PS2 online games before coming to the conclusion that only SOCOM is worth playing on it...and I don't care for that game.

I agree.

You can't blame racism on something else. If a person is ignorant it's because they haven't decided to educate themselves. We live in a society where it's extremely easy to expose yourself to other cultures. Parents really need to help their kids understand that racism is founded on a flawed set of views, but rational people still can educate themselves too.

Using "nigger" online isn't necessarily racist either. It's just offensive.

They could say any number of offensive and taboo words, and it would still bother you. But since "nigger" probably bothers people the most, that's what they use.

If there's any one part of the Bible that can be shown to be true, it's that people are by nature assholes. (Of course, I believe a lot more of it, but that discussion's for someplace else.)

And to the guy saying it's not the kid's fault, stop that. You take responsibility for your own actions, regardless of how 'easy' it might be to fall prey to acting like a jerk.

I haven't had as many problems on 360 games (CoD2, GRAW, Burnout, etc...) as I used to have on Halo2, but there are still some idiots out there. I think the feedback system has helped a little bit. For the most part I play with people on my FL, so it's not a huge deal.

I think you need to cut the ignorance. What does MTV have to do with anything? MTV and BET censor their music, and MTV is 95% everything else, 5% hip hop. Not to mention that the word used in "rap culture" is not the one you quoted, and is never acceptable by the majority of ethnicities anyway. Can't blame the kids? Sure you can, and you can blame their racist parents and their parents before them.

I can't believe what I quoted from you was an actual statement. Yikes.

There was some knobhead I was on the same table with playing Texas Hold 'Em with the gamertag turbanhater360 or something or other. Didn't say anything to insult or disrupt the game but he shouldn't be able to get away a handle like that, should he?

First off, I always turn off the "voice through speakers" option and play without a headset. This will mute everyone. You can see that people are talking, but you don't have to listen to them. I only use the headset to talk and listen with people on my friend's list. This works wonders. You should try it!

I think Microsoft should take the step of allowing people to join games based on age. I always find that playing with people that are 30 years old and older, is always a much better experience. Of course, I thought this was what the "Underground" category was for, but that category tag doesn't seem to matter at all.

Hmm.. Hopefully the next Dashboard update can address some of these issues.

The intermingling of older gamers and younger gamers is the same as the intermingling of older people and younger people.

There IS a reason why adults like to hang around adults, rather than kids at the age of 12 years old.

For the most part, you can't get a very mature, relaxed discussion going with a 12 year old if you're 30. You'd best have them with people your age who are past all that.

So if you go onto a game, expect it to be filled at least half with kids (or teens who act like kids - hell, even adults). Don't expect people to act as calm and rational as you'd expect people your own age to be, especially on a video game chat board or chat (come on, half of the gamers ARE young teens).

I'm speaking to the older gamers here - 18+. I'm not saying there aren't more relaxed, rational people out there younger than that, but from my own experience I'd rather be talking to people around my age. Younger kids, especially with the internet, spout of so much vile at one time (don't even care nor respect the other person - and yeah, Gabe's internet picture is SO ****ing true) making it harder for me to seek any decent convo on a game forum or chat.

There's a good chance you'll find the relaxed, fun, rational people you're after, but just keep in mind of the crap out there. My choice is usually just to play some friends I know IRL online - I haven't been much of an online gamer since the Quake 3 and Ragnarok Online days.

No. The word you often hear in "rap culture" (teehee) is nigga, not nigger. Don't confuse the two.

:lol 1st and foremost Im black. :lol

Now that its out in the open, I can begin. According to my friends I talk "proper" and I still used to get blasted on Live. There are somethings that I grew up saying that when Im in the comfort of my house I may just blurt out, we all do that. If you even have a certain twang in your voice be prepared to be called "nigger fag" for the rest of the match.

What did I do to remedy the situation?

1. I grabbed a 360 when it 1st came out and thats when Live is at its best. Most of the people who had 360 when it dropped were adults. During those 1st two months I grabbed a ton of friends who were great to play with.

2. As Ive grown distant in gaming tastes with some of my original friends from launch and the carry overs from Xbox1, Ive gone to GAF. Ive lurked on GAF for years and just finally started posting. Ive friend some great people to game with on here. Truffle, Kung Fu, Dennog, Rayne, Mr Maf, Mirik, goodnes Im forgetting someone important, sorry dude and Cold Blooded (who refuses my invites :lol ).

By doing the above Ive been able to enjoy Live, it makes the 360 experience for me.

And that being said, no, those kids have no right saying that kind of shit. But like Gabe's diagram shows, not much you can do about it. Shitty, ain't it?

Being assertive works best in person - even with voice I don't think it holds as much weight as being there in front of the person.

I don't take too kindly to racism and when I had a month of free Gold membership I only played a few times, because I encountered racists and then went crazy on them.

Getting Gold again soon, it's gonna be interesting :P

MS can crack down on it by hiring a few people to go onto some online games, find these people, record their usernames and ban them. They just don't seem interested in doing so.

Nigger and nigga are two different things. Although Im not a firm supporter of blacks reffering to themselves as such,....it is what it is. :lol

However, if you'd like to test your theory... Walk up to a crowd of black guys and say it, then report back here. :D

I was playing Texas Hold 'Em last night. Everytime this kid would lose, he would yell "FAGGOT!" and everytime he would win he would yell "NIGGA, MONEY IN THE BANK!".

Best way to deal with them is what I did: Beat his ass when he went all in with a flush.
