Xbox Music launches tomorrow (also new Dashboard update)

The more updates the dashboard gets, The more I get sick of it. Why can't they just leave it alone? :(

It's the same. It's just a rebranding. I have Windows 8 and with WP7 you still use Zune. Xbox Music and Zune use your account the same way and allow you to stream and download music. You just need Zune to sync your phone.

I know it, but I mean the streaming service.

this is the kind of shit i expect microsoft to break away from next-gen, trying to somehow positition devices differently from one another. as if the actual device means anything any more.

the "desktop" is ubiquitous. on some spoon aint there shit.

Well in this instance that is actually the industry standard. You can get Rdio or Spotify for 5 dollars a month but you only get access on computers. It is an additional 5 dollars a month if you want to use it on your phone or tablet.

So this is basicly Spotify, but you can use your Xbox to listen to music as well?
I'm not really seeing the benefits to cancel Spotify and start using this.

There are none. Especially with Xbox Music being exclusive to Windows Phone.

Is this a small or major dashboard update? Does it make it better or worse?

Better being defined as maybe just getting rid of the whole thing and booting directly to a game or something.

I just want the damn thing to not take forever loading the list of xbla game I have. It's pathetic and shows how bolted together the 360's interface is.

Were you in the beta? You had to update daily and it took about 3-5 minutes each time.

It was max two times a week for me. Usually on Monday or Tuesday. Beta updates were not a big deal.

Edit: with Spotify can you download songs to your phone and listen offline?

Especially considering Spotify already has random, radio-like play and the ability to buy MP3s directly from the client (at least in the UK).

NY Times said:
And there is an option akin to Spotify that lets users listen free to any music from their computer, though they will get audio and visual advertisements. (Some major bands, like the Beatles, are missing from the catalog.) Like Spotify, Xbox Music offers a $10-a-month ad-free service that includes many other features, like the ability to listen to music on smartphones and the Xbox 360 game console.
So they're launching a service called Xbox Music. But you can't actually use it on an Xbox (unless you want to pay $10/month). Makes perfect sense.

Yeah... I remember reading somewhere that it would be free to use on the Xbox through ads but I guess they were wrong (or maybe I read it wrong).

That is pretty stupid.

Yep, only for premium members though. 10 bucks a month.

Yeah, here in the Netherlands as well. No need for Last fm anymore.

Holy shit, is that verified? Xbox owners can't actually use something called "Xbox Music" unless they pay $10 a month to get it, on top of the $60 a year they're likely paying for Xbox Live Gold?

Fuck that.

I've been using it for a while on Win 8. It's fantastic. Also, the service has a 30 day trial.

Were you in the beta? You had to update daily and it took about 3-5 minutes each time.

Not every day. My complain though was that I had to clear the cache every now and then for the update to actually download. Also, the updates were instantaneous downloads, 20 seconds or less. It took longer to install than to download.

So the big advantage here is that they feel they've combined all the music services into one.

iTunes = music match and song purchasing
Spotify = cloud streaming and download
Pandora = free streaming radio stations (no skip limits on Xbox Music)
Amazon = cloud storage for purchased music

They're promising by next year Xbox Music will do all of this on Windows, Android, and iOS.

I've been able to use the Zune Pass on Xbox without a gold account. Wonder if they've changed that or not?

I agree it is dumb not to have ad-supported music on the console. The Last.FM app on Xbox and the iHeartRadio app both have free ad-supported music stations.

But Spotify also let's you purchase music and stream radio stations with music matches.

Any enhancements to system are welcome

Normally, but the xbox came out in 2005 with no idea of what it would have to do by 2012. All the apps and the cluttered dashboard are slapped together with duct tape as you see the console kind of struggle with the picture heavy interface.

Amazing how during this BETA, the OS became far more like the PS3 OS, while lately the PS3 OS has bee more like what the Xbox OS used to be.

During the Beta it's been constant updates, slow as all fuck downloads, and even the actual dash updates take fucking FOR EVER.

Lately, anything pertaining to downloads on the PS3 has actually been surprisingly quick, at least for me.

Hopefully once the final dash is released everything will go back to normal. Or MS will have some splening to dooooo.

I'd like a Spotify app too, if not on Xbox then on the PS3/4 or Wii-U... I won't be changing services unless there is some kind of amazing offer from MS.. even then, the community and playlists I already have set up in Spotify would be a pain in the arse to recreate on another service.

It must be your Xbox mate, as the interface loads very quickly on my machine.

In fact it's a lot faster in terms of that kind of thing than the last dash.

I've done every dash update this beta, and even on my crap 3mbit DSL, they were lightning quick. You should check your setup. I know a number of people who had to totally wipe their router config and reconfigure it to fix things after complaining about bad Xbox download speeds.

Can someone just check something for me please, is there an issue with xbox live showing 'new demos' on the dash?, it just shows the spinning loading icon for me. (UK)

to start this using kinect, do you have to say 'xbox... xbox music'?

moaning about a beta is pretty daft.

Does this mean that since Internet Explorer is coming "later" that people in the beta currently will lose it tomorrow, and will have to wait for it to be released again?

Boo if so.

This.

Unfortunately they still view the Xbox customer as an entity to be nickeled and dime'd for everything.

I look forward to the service being renamed again in 2 years

It's because they still have your Xbox download the big images for browsing the games each time you start it up.. it doesn't keep them on the HDD. If you disconnect from the internet, the list comes up instantly but with the OG 16x16 tiles or some shit from the original dash.

Music licensing is a pretty complicated and annoying business. Labels demand an extra fee to stream music to mobile devices, which is why Last.fm and Spotify cost extra money if you want them on your phone. The same demands could've been put in place for music streaming to the Xbox. Of course it's possible to subsidize the additional cost. Microsoft did that for Last.fm on Windows Phone. They should've rolled it into the Gold subscription. It's not like they're making enough money off it.

i think that's been changed in the update.

so,other than microsoft music, what else is included in this update?
the browser if i remember correctly..anything else?

Most likely is his Xbox. I just replaced my 2007 Xbox with a 2012 Slim and everything is faster.
