Xbox One does not provide a facility to cancel subscriptions from the console

Saw this topic trending on reddit regarding Xbox One only allowing to subscribe from the console but not allowing to unsubscribe or cancel auto-renewal from the console. Seems users can only do it online from a PC or Mobile etc. Isn't it standard for consoles to allow both subscribe and unsubscribe from the console itself? I know Sony and Nintendo both allow it.

This happened to me plenty of times and had to do it online smh it's been like tht for a long time. No need for tht, it's annoying and we all know it's purposely done so tht they can keep your money if you forget or put it off for another day. Similar to tht Sony auto renew bs few weeks ago.

I can cancel a PS+ subscription from the PS4 UI, even though it isn't as easy to find as it should be (IMO).

I always thought it should be similar on the X1.

Well that is just silly, and I highly doubt an "accidental oversight" by one of, if not the largest software producers in the world.

Make noise and they should add it.
Clearly not. I tried to cancel a contract once and the site pretending that the those specific web pages are not working (the subscribe one working fine wierdly) requesting me to call a number if I want to cancel.

as for noise, what noise, this thread will be dead in less than a page or two. They don't complain about the actual anti-consumer stuff.

Yeah, so you are forced to call a "retention specialist", I know the routine from years in the financial industry.

Yeah, I realized I was never using my Xbox much, yet still paying for Gold. Cancelling was the most annoying thing ever and had me cursing Microsoft.

I had an affordable phone company for my son's watch phone and I literally had to call in to cancel and state why lol I was like wtf.

How is it not easy on the PS4? The dashboard has a yellow Plus icon that with one click leads directly to a menu showing ps+ free games and an obvious Manage Membership button.

You should be able to cancel on a console, but at least MS does it on the website. They do bury it deep though and the 360 console also let you turn off renewal. So it's a step back if you really can't do it on the xb1 now.

Thank God i only used a 1 month free trial on the 360. Could’ve swore my nephew paid for a month as well, guess not.

Yeah this is shady and intentional by MS. Hell even Amazon does this crap. I clicked on their HBO trial to check first but it got added the subscription right away and there was no way for me to cancel it on fire tv. Had to ask my sister to log into her Amazon to cancel it because I’m using her account.

Yea, I noticed that. What's funny is that you can cancel EA Access through the console though. They make it extremely easy.

You can access your Microsoft account via the Edge browser installed on the console and cancel it from there. So technically you can cancel from the console. It's just a pain in the ass.

This is a really bad practice. Making it easier for consumers to sign up for something but making it harder to cancel is pretty anti consumer thing to do.

I think if this was a Sony thread, some of the usual suspects would be posting "#4ThePlayers".

You are right that the usual anti consumer crowd here ignores anything related to MS.

That is not the same as direct facility provided on the console for the user to use easily. Why is the feature to subscribe also not routed via the use of the web browser then instead of directly being on the console? Technically speaking one can buy games and subscriptions for other console platforms as well using the same web browser but its not something MS wants users to do so.

Yeah this is stupid. I can cancel my EA Access sub but not anything else. It’s very stupid! It’s my choice if I want to renew or not

It’s called auto-billing. I renewed last night using a card and it gave me the option to turn it off. I have never actually used it. I always use prepaid cards. But when I entered a new card, it had it set to “on” and affected me a free month if I left it on. It allowed me to turn it off. So, it is in there somewhere.

This is why I only use prepaid cards for XBL and PSN.

I remember when you had to call them to cancel. This was on the original Xbox and its Xbox Live. I was 16 at the time, using my parents' credit card to play, and I had to call abroad to cancel, If I remember correctly. I live in a small country and I doubt they had a local number. That was scary as hell!

The crazy part is if I remember correctly, the option to cancel used to be on the system’s dashboard. I don’t think it’s coincidence it mysteriously disappeared.

They removed the option. It uses to be pretty easy to find on the xbox. It's literally a tactic to retain subscriptions. I tried to cancel my free trial of gamepads, realized this and subsequently cancelled all my subscriptions for xbox. Not cool, Microsoft

I also noticed that auto renew is turned on by default if you renew your gold via the console. Found out when I had a notification on my phone from Paypal with a transaction I don't recall making. Cheeky gits!

Well that just well, dare I say, anticonsumer.

Makes difficult in the hope to user forget and give up on cancel.

Pretty “standard” practice in any service like subscription.

It's easy to do on the website but that's not an excuse--they absolutely should have the option to cancel subscriptions in the Xbox UI.
