Xbox One: Hard Drive Full at 362GBs

You honestly think that will go over well? Sending out an update telling a gamer to delete 3 or 4 games so it can be used for something they may not even want to use? To me that's working backwards when they don't have to.

I agree, and I think the updates are busted right now anyway -- at least the game updates. KI minor bug fix patch is almost the size of the entire game. So I'm not surprised if they have a lot of space reserved for things like updates, gamedvr, saves etc. As the IGN people acknowledge, this only covers the amount of space you can use for installed games. There is another 30GB outstanding that isn't part of the OS partition

I find all the automatic clip recording annoying enough now; I can't imagine what it would be like if I had to stop and delete something so Ryse could record a meaningless MP clip

repeat after me "U S B". What part of that is proprietary.

USB 3.0 only. Most people only have USB 2.0 hard drives so they'll need to spend more money. Not to mention USB 3.0 drives are a lot more expensive. It's not proprietary, but it's still a hell of a lot more expensive than just replacing an internal hard drive like with the PS4.

- why isn't the HDD replaceable by the user?

Because it's a rushed out piece of hardware? Alot is pointing towards them being caught by surprise by Sonys move in February. Stuff will be prioritized out. As long as it holds all the internals, and doesn't overheat, that was good enough for Microsoft apparently.

So you're upset because a business is making smart business decisions? Mmmkay...

When they go against my interests?

You're goddamned right I am. There are a lot of things a company can do which make them more cash at your expense, if you want to bend over for them then good for you. I reserve my right to complain on the internet, and take my business elsewhere.

We'll see. Do you fully trust their word on that? That they won't come out with special Xbox external HDD's that you must buy to expand your storage? They mandated proprietary HDD's last gen.

they're backwards compatible

You don't want to load your games over USB 2.0, the transfer rate is pretty horrendous. Internal HDD just makes more sense. A PS4 with a user-replaced internal HDD will murder an Xbone trying to load off an external USB 2.0 HDD. If the user put an SSD in the PS4 it will run rings around even the non-replaceable Xbone internal HDD.

Haha! I love how many people are mad at Kick51's obvious joke post, and calling for his ban. And instead, he got a cool tag for it.

Also, I have a PS3 with 500gb. Guess who can't have all his games installed.

*thumbs self* This guyyyyyy!

I just don't want the same to happen to me with the ps4. So I'll never be able to upgrade and feel safe.
Ouch! Hehe.

I actually just upgraded my PS3 from 500GB to 1TB over the weekend. I haven't been able to download the last few months of PS+ games because I was out of space. I knew it was going to be a long process, since I did it before. But Sony need to do something about library management. It was a damn nightmare trying to figure out which of the 460 items in my download history weren't already on my PS3. And shit was all out of order with no way to sort or search. I reckon I shouldn't have to go through that again with PS3, but Sony need to get on the ball for PS4 library management, with so many gamers making the jump to all-digital.

The IGN video said external hard drives will only support USB 3.0 due to the speed needed to play games.

That would make sense actually, but I'm pretty sure the IGN guys are making an assumption there because the support was announced as usb3 as opposed to a statement that only usb3 will work. Either way, you just need to buy a different adapter. Your old housing will be sata2->usb2 and you need to replace it with sata2->usb3, you don't need a new drive

So if I only need 10mb of space freed up there is no way to know? I have to guess which game I should delete to get enough space? Then if that game wasn't enough, I have to go see that message again to know that I haven't deleted enough? What a load of bullshit.

I can't watch the video, did they show otherwise?

This actually convinces me that Microsoft is using Kinect to store advertising data locally. They won't push that data back to their servers because it would be a waste of their resources, instead they push advertisements to the console and let the system work out what ads to target the current user.\

Or they have the shittiest system in place for recording game footage for Upload Studio.

Nope. That's precisely what they talked about in the video.

This is true for people who use external HDD housing devices and slap their own internal HDD's inside. For people who are expecting to use their USB 2.0 Western Digital External HDD or their NAS, they're in for a rude awakening.

Also remember people, 500gb != 500gib. 500gb is 465gib which is how it's measured by the computer. Most harddrive manufacturers do the former which will always be less than the binary version of a gigabyte. (1000^3 vs 1024^3). It's fucking annoying.

In case it wasn't stated already.

That said, there's gotta be a reason why there's such a wide gulf (465->365). There's no way the OS should take up to 100gb's... They have to be setting some aside for caching purposes or something cause that doesn't seem right.

I was going to ask if anybody thinks the caching of TV and games on the Xbox might be the cause. (For example Tivo caches the last 30 minutes on all tuners so my Tivo effectively has a buffer of 2hrs of TV.) Then I reminded myself it's not that much data.(For example on my Tivo 1hr of HD video takes 6GB so the cache it uses is at most 12GB.)

Terrible.

My PS4 only had 409 GBs available to me out of the box, so I swapped that fucker out for a 1TB drive day one.

Xbox owners, it's not a big deal, just get a bigger drive and replac... oooooh... right... the thing... ooooh that sucks.

Um... look on the bright side... uh... not many Xbone games worth playing anyways, so the chances of you filling the drive up are pretty low I'd assume. Life gives you lemons...

There is a mirror of your cloud space on the harddrive. The games all save to the harddrive first because it would take way too long to save directly to the cloud (because of slow upload speeds)

Has every user 100GB cloud space ? I cant think of a reason why there is so much space lost otherwise. The OS probably takes less than 1GB

360 also had 7GB of cache reserved for games as well, dont know if that is still needed now that every game is installed.

We'll see how it goes, but using an adapter isn't going to magically increase your transfer rate.

who knows about upload studio, but if that wasn't an original plan, and was more of a reaction, it could have been Frankensteined in and is eating up resources....I doubt it though.....

You are now looking at a preview of Windows 12.

Ironically, Windows 8 runs just fine on a 32 GB SSD. I think I had 49 GB usable at the start on my 64 GB.

MS has clearly set aside a bunch of space for future updates, though I can't imagine why it would be so large.

I find it so hard to believe that today the os takes up so much of the resources on what is supposed to be primarily a games machine.

Partitions. Something people seem to forget about because they want to tear Microsoft down at every move. The OG Xbox had 3 750GB partitions for game cache. I wouldn't be surprised to see multiple partitions for the different functions of the console.

What is there to fix? If it's being taken up by the OS there's not too much they can do.

I'm talking more about the ability to actually see how much space is being used, as well making it easier to uninstall apps and games. Also, I doubt all of this space is being used by just the OS.

Isn't the Xbox One running 3 different operating systems? I thought it was.

One of the OSs is a hypervisor, which should be tiny. One is the Game OS which is actually distributed with each game, so it isn't part of the reserved data. And then there is the dashboard OS.

None of that should account for 100GB. There must be a lot of reserved space.

I haven't watched the video, how did they add up the used space?

I was slightly ok with this when I thought space would be managed automatically, but now that I have to guess how much space to clear out I am most certainly not ok with this. How hard could it be to let me see how much space is free on my hdd?

That's it, I'm off to twitter. Prepare yourself Larry.

What the actual hell? 1GB? The OS has at least triple the RAM dedicated to it! What are you smoking?
