Xbox One: Languages are region locked

Just got a ONE and can't set the language to English/Switzerland. Who in their right mind thought this was a good idea? I hope they "fix" this with the Win10 update!

Isn't English like a requirement for the education system in the majority of EU countries due to the politic and economic impacts of the UK?
I don't see why they would restrict languages for a region.
It makes no sense.
People move a lot, and might not want to be locked into that region language or prefer another one instead.

My bet is, that the way they structured regions and stores are tied together was needed for digital rights management and a future where Microsoft expected Kinect voice commands to be available in every language.

But that's hard, and now they're stuck with a super shitty solution that they are hopefully fixing.

I really hope they're fixing this soon. Hopefully with the upgrade from having a Windows 8 based dashboard to Windows 10.

I use english on all my technology. Phone, PC, Xbox etc. It's great to have the option for different languages but forcing a specific one based on location is never good.

Another annoyance related to language: when I have my system setting in Dutch, Dead Rising 3 and Ryse will have Dutch voiceacting as well. It's awful. Instead of having an ingame option to change it, I have to set my system language to English.

Ubisoft does this too on 360 and it annoys me so fucking much. How hard is to make this an ingame option?

No.

The stupid xbox website thinks I'm from Switzerland or Sweden because I accessed it from there once on a new phone when I was abroad. Even when I set en-GB in the URL it switches to sv-SE and tries to show me prices in Kr. I suspect it has set a cookie on my phone. Is there any way to find and delete just the offending cookie on an android phone?

The Xbox One language system is terrible in Belgium. Belgium is divided in a Dutch speaking part (which respresents the majority of the country) and a French speaking one. Even if you select 'Dutch' as your language, all achievements show up in French. I know it's not a major problem, but it bothers me significantly.

It's been like this since release now. They obviously don't care.

You can select your default locale here : http://www.xbox.com/Shell/ChangeLocale

Man, I was kinda pissed that my girlfriend couldn't just select English as a language while still accessing the Dutch store, but your story sounds even worse. They should fix this shit.

UK is not that big of a deal to many European countries, English is taught because its an international language.

If at least we had the option to select in-game language through a toggle... instead most games don't give a fuck, case in point Sunset Overdrive is yet another game which forced me to change the region of the console to play it in english

This still sucks... No wonder DR3 was so cheap on disk... I just want my console in Dutch and the game in English :( Why is this even an restriction... Infamous had it, really annoys me...

This has to be the most frustrating thing about the Xbox.

I'm an American living in spain. I want my region to be spain. Sure no problem but why can't I fucking choose my language to be English?

Easily the most frustrating thing I can remember on a console and there is absolutely no word from Microsoft if it will ever change.

I'm Spanish and want to have my console in English as well.

It's absurd.

It's baffling to me that even 2016 this is still an issue for the XBone OS. Got my country set to a country/language from the other side of the planet due to this.

I have mine set to the USA. Thing is if I want to use the one guide I need to be in spain.
So I'm constantly having to restart my Xbox one when I want to watch TV or when I want to play a game

I do this, but I'm becoming more and more paranoid that MS will start IP blocking / banning non-US people.
Quoting pages from this, but don't worry, they won't do this. There's to much buying/selling IP's from the central organisations which hold them. You often get large pools of IPs moving countries with a large delay in geo caching DB's.

Basically, they'd end up blocking a lot of genuine users.

How is this even possible? Microsoft is one of the most internationally prevalent companies, they must have guidelines for this stuff.

Which is why all of us are completely baffled by this.

It's not even about wanting to set my region somewhere else to get cheaper games. It's about just changing the damn language, I don't want to play games in Spanish and I don't want to restart my Xbox every single time just to change my language(and by default region)

There have been like...20 or more threads on reddit and with top upvotes and not a single thing changed since then nor did any MS employee comment.

Only thing I remember was a cool dude at GDC who asked Spencer about it and he was like "I didn't even know such a problem existed, looking into it etc".

So yeah, this issue isn't changing any time soon. Would love to be wrong of course.

As much as I love my XB1, this is one of the most annoying oversights in quite some time - and they don't even acknowledge the problem :/

I have no issues with the region lock and languages I have a Canadian console and a UK console, now living in UK before France, Canada, Italy, Romania and never got issues.
Some games offer multiples languages options and you simply have to put the language of the console in the language that you want (if not available in the menu of the game)
If the game does not allow well obviously you can't change the language sadly except if there are voice packs available on marketplace but if you buy digital, you have all the languages in digital and for X360 games from the marketplace that you dl the game you will have the language of it simply. Not perfect but did not have any issues so far.

I don't think you understand the issue.

Certain regions only allow you to choose one language. For example, if your region is spain you can not change your language to English. There are no options in game to change to English.

So if someone wants to play a game in English, and they live in Spain, they can't unless they set their region to some other country that has English available. We aren't complaining about region locks, we are complaining that certain languages are locked to regions

I've got my console set to UK for language purposes although I'm in Switzerland, one unwanted effect is that achievements for some games appear in German in the Xbox app.

My computer is set to UK region, Store to UK, console to UK, but no, I get to enjoy the German achievement titles.

Don't know how bad it currently it is ( I no longer check the achievements on the console).

In the Netherlands achievements appear both in English and Dutch at random.
Strange you do not have the new dashboard but the old one, is your console updated?
Those shots were taken on the old dashboard before the NXOE update went live.

Ah yes I see, this can be for sure a problem in some countries with multiples languages if not all are here.
But in the case of an English speaking person in Spain, it's easy: you simply switch to Uk – English for example the game will go in English as wanted, it’s not the best but it’s working I’m doing this for Halo for example I switch the region that I need regarding the language and mostly I stay in English for the voices actors. If I switch back to French -> France for example my Halo game come back to French as wanted.

But I shouldn't have to do that, why do I need to restart my Xbox one every time I want to watch TV or play a game?

There is obviously a "fix" but I'm sure you and everyone(except Microsoft apparently) can understand how frustrating and annoying it is you have to restart your Xbox one just to accomplish something that should have been a no brainer from day one.
