Xbox One users can't use their real names online at launch

Only put it in if you can approve who sees your name. Don't need some douche in my inbox telling me my name sucks dick after I demolish them in a game.
 
Doesn't seem like a smart idea to use your real name on XBL anyway with all the trolls and racists.

Much like YouTube's real name option, this is a feature that probably only 2% of users will ever use.
 
It was a terrible idea. A small one among many. MS clearly had built the infrastructure around all kinds of anti-privacy mandates, and now in the post-Prism world, MS is having to backtrack and rethink its entire approach to its "connected" infrastructure.
 
Who the hell wants to post their real name online anyway?

Have you ever listened to the freaks on XBL? I don't want them anywhere NEAR my zip code.

I read you can do something like that on PS4... just share your real name and facebook profile on PSN to friends... the gametag is public.

I have no problem with use my real name... to be fair I prefer to use my real name :)

Sony does.

Sony’s reasoning behind this is that it can draw in casual users in a way that PSN IDs may not, with one perhaps being more inclined to accept a friend’s request from someone with a real name rather than an unusual ID tag. When requests come from random IDs, one is less inclined overall to accept them, not knowing who is behind the accounts.

With real names, such trepidation is nullified, and beyond that the use of real names reminds one that there is an actual person behind that name, and more of a gaming relationship could potentially form with individuals who otherwise may not be willing to connect. Sony wants to see its user base expand, and it feels this could be one way for that to happen.

Those who are uneasy about using their real names won’t have to, however, so gamers need not fear that their online anonymity is in danger. Those who want to continue using their PSN IDs will be able to do so without any issues. What do you think of the change? Do you like the idea of being able to use your real name, or will you stick to more anonymous tags?

It's not really a big deal, but it's strange how insulated XB1 will be as a system at launch. Aside from Twitch, you can't even share your recorded videos outside XBL at launch.

PS4, on the other hand, I'm expecting tons of Facebook feeds showing people that they've now linked their PSN to Facebook or whatnot. They're probably going to rely on their core audience to shout out to their friends on FB/Twitter/etc "I GOT A PS4!"

I'm not into online gaming so how do they stop you from using your real name?

Does it say "I'm sorry you cannot use the name "David Steele" why don't you try "izakilla459"."

Because it's a tiny feature I think it's a privacy concern. MS has been getting hit hard with privacy issues.

Could it be that they know this is such a miniscule feature that they have decided to not spend any time on it at all now, and will add it in down the line when things calm down a bit.

Could also be something having to do with the legal department. Didn't Google have to go through a lot of shit to use real names?

It's probably because it's a tiny feature that it's among the first to be delayed when you're getting closer to the deadline.

No, but I think it's a lost opportunity on MS's end.

I've often suspected that one of the business reasons behind the social integration of PS4 is because it can potentially work to weaken the established Xbox online community links.

If by connecting your real social identity/feed to the console, and broadcasting out to your friends/world that you own a Playstation 4, that has a sway effect, especially if it ripples out throughout the community.

Right now, any gamer deeply entrenched in the XBL ecosystem wouldn't even consider a PS4 due to the fact that their gamer friends are there. But if they go on FB, and see a lot of their real-life friends owning a PS4, they could be swayed, since it opens up an extra community of potential gamers.

Tout a feature, end up delaying it just to make the date, like what happened with a few other features as well, as I recall correctly.

That's pretty much what "rushed" means, no?
 
I am certainly not associating my real name with my gamertag. And I wish Google would stop asking me to do it on their shit as well, lol.

I'm pretty sure your real name is already associated with your gamer tag. Unless you lied during registration of course.

If you take into account what they've changed in the past 6 months? I'm not surprised whatsoever that some features have been pushed.
