Xbox One users can't use their real names online at launch

Are you 12? Otherwise your non-gamer friends won't even give a shit.

why are gamers so insecure..

Age has nothing to do with it. Imagine the fun if you beat someone that can't handle losing and he uses your real name to find out where you live? I imagine this real name thing is only viewable by your friends list. At least I hope so. But what if followers can see it too? That could be very bad.

You think people would actually throw down in real life if you killed them in Halo?

I really don't want this feature ever implemented, honestly, there's so much other stuff that's more important to me.

I already know my friends by gamertag anyway, I really don't need to/care to see real names on there anyway.

Good. I wouldn't want to use my Real Name anyway. Fat chance I'd want all the idiots on Xbox Live to know my real name.

Imagine properly implemented features where you can choose who to show it to!

That's why Microsoft is pulling a 180 and delaying it.

So do they plan to turn Xbox Live into something like Facebook? I wouldn't mind being able to search for friends on Live using their real name. Much better than the awkwardness of asking to spell out their gamertag. Also I like it when I can tie my name to my Google account, that way whenever I use google it recognizes me and my devices.

I appreciate the idea of using real names to curb some of the fouler behavior people trend towards when peeking behind a safe veil of anonymity...

But most people will revert to being dickbags as long as there's no one physically there beside them threatening to slap them for it. In the end, real names would only serve to greatly increase the ability for internet tough guys to find and target the people they pick fights with, but in real life. Which is super crazy dangerous, just bad news for everyone.

Microsoft Executives said this. Most likely it had to do with maybe using them for business purposes. Didnt they say that it was possible for that? I couldnt imagine havin a skype business group chat and see user harryballz or somethin worse. But agan like most here said it can be abused.

Not the end of the world, but wtf? At this point, MS needs to make a list of shit that I'll actually be able to do at launch with the damn thing.

They need to make a redacted version of the reveal, and edit out all the shit that doesn't work at launch. Would be 5 minutes.

EDIT: For clarification, this doesn't matter that much to me. It's pretty much a non-feature. However, this is yet another in a long line of shit that they said you could do that doesn't work at launch. Hence the snark.

People said what you said years ago about just being 'online.' Anonymity is king, they said. Revealing your real identity is risky, they said.

Then there was this guy called Mark Zuckerberg who laughed all the way to the bank on the idea of using your real name online.

When your last name rhymes with a word that means 'female dog', you will think like I do.

Well, yeah. But it is not visible to anyone but me. Which is how I want it. And will keep it.

Yea, and if you think about it, they're pushing this back because they're behind, and have not implemented the proper "options" for users to toggle how they want their name to be shown.
Christ. It's not broadcasting your real name out there for all to see. This is between friends.
Yep, and a lot of people in here seem to not understand that, or are just saying "this is ok" to make it seem like a good decision by Microsoft to delay it.

Why? Your real name is a tiny google search away. Makes no difference, if some crazy wants to slash a bitch over Call of Duty it isn't like they are slowed down.
haha, first result.

I know that using real names for online services is a trend now because of Facebook and whatnot, but I still prefer not to use my actual name for anything that isn't business/work related. I may be a little paranoid when it comes to that, but the thing is once something's out there on the Internet chances are it's there for good, and I have heard stories of people getting fired because their employer didn't like something they put on Instagram and things like that.

Loving the "it's totes fine, I like my privacy" comments. Several from people who said that the Kinect's invasion of privacy was a non-issue, because privacy doesn't matter.

Dafuq?

Stop trying to spin a delayed feature as a positive. Conversely, others shouldn't spin it as the end of the world, as if it was some sort of make-or-break feature in the first place.
