I assume Sony is doing the same. I wonder if this could have the effect of shortening the next gen's lifespan. Not because Sony and Microsoft want to, but because the barrier to entry into the console market is lower. In a few years a company could put together a new console, sell it for a small profit or small loss, and beat the specs of the XB1 and PS4. If VR goggles catches on such a console could be marketed as the console that has the power to play games of next gen quality at the FPS and resolution needed by VR.
Apple, Google, Valve, and Amazon all come to mind as companies that have the resources and financial motive to want to own the 'brain box' that is hooked up to your TV, and games are the most reliable route to get hardware in that position. The higher profit margins now could ironically give MS and Sony more competition in the future.
