Xbox One will be break-even or profit-making from launch

specs =/= heat
Power consumption = heat
PS4 specs > Ps3 specs
PS4 power consumption < ps3 power consumption
PS4 power consumption ~= PS3 slim power consumption

but what about all those gddr5 chips bolted straight to the mobo, surely theyre gonna get things toasty, especially when there is NO spare room in that ps4 case

This is a very good thing if both consoles prove to be profitable. It means that next gen should be shorter than this gen since both consoles will have profitable margins right out of the gate.

I assume Sony is doing the same. I wonder if this could have the effect of shortening the next gen's lifespan. Not because Sony and Microsoft want to, but because the barrier to entry into the console market is lower. In a few years a company could put together a new console, sell it for a small profit or small loss, and beat the specs of the XB1 and PS4. If VR goggles catches on such a console could be marketed as the console that has the power to play games of next gen quality at the FPS and resolution needed by VR.

Apple, Google, Valve, and Amazon all come to mind as companies that have the resources and financial motive to want to own the 'brain box' that is hooked up to your TV, and games are the most reliable route to get hardware in that position. The higher profit margins now could ironically give MS and Sony more competition in the future.

Not sure if serious. Sarcasm meter has been destroyed with the impending launch of these new systems. I think the Sony Engineers know what they are doing, they are a Hardware company basically, so they know whats up.

Their profits will depend on how long they can sustain market loss to the PS4. Since they have "such overhead" they can and will attempt to slash prices on the Xbone if the PS4 jumps out ahead quicker or further than expected. The issue they face is the nature of components that even Sony is using this time around being less "exotic", and Sony is the master of hardware revisions because they are a hardware company. Only thing to slow Sony down is how long it takes the Xbone to become ultra-competitive in sales, to the point where Sony would have to react on price and layout. Sony now more than ever wants, needs, those piles of money.

Summary, MS will reduce the price of Xbone first, and faster than Sony. Even if MS lowers the price to match the PS4, Sony will be looking to rest on their price longer.

Interesting point.

I don't know -- I wouldn't say that this upcoming gen will be significantly shorter but it may be shorter by about a year or two.

So, early adopters will get to buff Microsoft's ledger for the first half year or year or so and then everyone else will get aggressive price cuts?

Don't be an early adopter guys! Same for the PS4! You're exploited guinea pigs!

With inflation taken into account, the PS4 costs as much as the PS2 did in 2000. I doubt Sony is making much (if anything) on PS4 hardware.

YLOD? bluray diode failure rate on phats? sony is not infallible

This is a better situation for industry .. as long as the console is not sold for 600 $
and its make the generational leap .. am okay with this

Nintendo sells the Wii U for 350 $ and its a 8 year old technology .. so they are not in
"break-even" situation .. they make a huge profit from hardware

*facepalm*

''We are launching a console that is more expensive than our competition, but guess what? We are going to break even by doing that on day 1. Overdelivering value''

Fucking idiots.

This was clearly intended as a message to shareholders, not the 20,000 or so people neck deep in the console war of whom 2/3 won't buy the thing anyway

this is good news for everyone. it should hopefully mean we see prices coming down quicker than we did last gen. which will hopefully mean more people own one or both consoles, which will hopefully mean more games to play.

starting as high as they did last gen, with out making a profit on the hardware... has meant it took way too long for the consoles to get below $200. Next gen, unless the Xbone falls flat on its face sales wise, we should get there much much quicker.
