You seriously thing that high end hardware will be the same cost at the slim Xbox One S, in 18 months?

Not sure I understand what you are asking? 6TF in late 2017 is not some crazy cutting edge card. This summer, in 2016, AMD has a 5.5TF card at $199 consumer price. Trade price for it would be $125-150. Imagining Sony selling a console with a barely more powerful card 1.5 years later for $399, not so crazy.

$499 minimum. The S is $399 right now for 2TB. And that's less powerful tech. A year won't change tech prices so much that they can do that.

I could see $499 X1Scorpio and $499 PS4K. Maybe.

I think we are probably ~16-18 months from launch, so that gives some time for more cost reduction I think.

Were I on MS's strategic team I would argue that a base SKU of $399 is an important baseline to have with premium SKUs above for those that want to spend more (and options below). In other words I'd have something like:

Scorpio: $399, $449, $499
Xbox One S: $299, $349

I'm basing this on what I (as a complete amateur market analyst) believe would be the best opportunity for these boxes to have a quantifiable impact on sales. I admit that this could be outweighed by cost of manufacturing and so could require MS to eat a loss that they may be unwilling to do.

They want people in their ecosystem? $399

Yeah, I can't imagine it being higher than $499 unless they bundle in some good accessories or storage at those price points.

Both Sony and MS have been burned by higher price points in the past. Of course, they're both introducing new SKU models/strategies, so there isn't really a direct precedent to go off of.

$499 if they are just going to push it as a premium option

$399 if they intend it to be the primary option

I think the latter is most likely

At the end of the day it's a lump of silicon (of a specific size), some RAM chips and a motherboard. Plus the obvious extras. 4 years on from the XB1 and advancements in technology will bring the build cost similar to that of the original launch machine.

These crazy $599 and above prices are never going to happen. After the mistakes of the XB1 they are going to want people to actually be interested in this thing.

The "4K native" promise (implying that high-profile AAA games will have it, not indies with simplistic graphics) is like the 1080p60 promise of Uncharted 4. It's just PR fluff and nothing more.

Both consoles (Scorpio & Neo) should target 1080p60 with Ultra settings.

I don't know why many only mention 1080p or 4k as if these are the only options available. 1440p is also a big step above full hd and games can still run with all the bells and whistles.

Probably because that starts to muddy the message that it's a 4K machine.

I really am hoping for $399, especially OG XB1 may hit $199. $499 may be hard to sell and I'm betting MS will start phasing out OG XB1 within a year or two and/or devs will start focusing on Scorpio more. i.e. Crystal Dynamics will be likely work on Tomb Raider 3, taking advantage of Scorpio's power while Nixxies do XB1 port. It's like XB1 and X360 over again.

But there will be a 4k image going to the tv ;-)
But seriously, yes, the system is going to be a 4k machine. People shouldn't expect from that, though.
It'd be cool for third party to let gamers decide on the settings of the game, though.
Not as much as on pc but presets for different resolutions.

I read this post as rap lyrics.

I say $549 launch price, with 1TB.
So i been wondering. If you have a xb1 already why drop 5 or 600 on a system? I mean 6tf is pretty powerful, but you can buy a graphics card which far out classes that for the same 600. And with MS new PC strategy, seems even less incentive to buy it.

1440p supersampled wouldn't hurt either. :) Most people have 1080p TVs.

PS3 launched at $599.

$599 in 2006 equals $719.91 in 2016

People paid that in droves. People also bought the X1 at $499.

$499 isn't crazy for 2017. $549 isn't even all that crazy, especially for something trying to be a gaming PC replacement (lite). People buy a new iPhone at $600 every year or two.

PS3 sold "in droves" at 599? In which alternate universe? Being sold-out d1 doesn't mean anything.

Scorpio will be 399. 6TF in late 2017 isn't going to be high-end. The equivalent 480x is releasing this summer for 199.

Exactly, this is xbox elite for enthusiasts. The xbox controller in UK is £ 40, the elite controller is £ 100.

I expect it will be $ 600 minimum.

The only people that paid $599 for the PS3 in "droves" were early adopters. The sales soon cratered after that. Some months the PS3 was being outsold by the GBA before Sony had to drop the price by $100 that following E3. I remember because it was a running joke in NPD threads on whether the PS3 or the GBA would outsell the other that particular month.

PS4K is rumored 4.14TF and I'm sure they're planning on 4K gaming.

Actually, no, I asume they don't. 2x more power isn't enough to bump PS4 games like the upcoming GTS or God of War up to 4k (native). I think their "Neo mode" will include more details, better framerates, things like that, which are then upscaled to 4k.

That's just the card without anything else (no cpu, case etc...etc...). That being said my personal prediction for Scorpio is $399 to $499 tops.

Elite controller for £100? That's a BIG price drop. That shit was like £160 when I actually wanted it.

6 TF = 8GB GDDR5

It will be similar to the PS4 launch where no one expected a console with with this kind of tech be priced at $399, then be shocked when it actually is.

Then in a year some people will criticize MS for launching with "low end hardware" and they will forget this thread, and all other threads leading up to the price announcement.

Well to be fair a discrete gpu has a case and custom cooling that won't be needed on an APU manufacture. But that's small potatoes. It can hit $500 or under.

"being sold out doesn't mean anything" ???

You couldn't get one for months. They were going for $1500 on ebay. You forget.

$200 for the 480x - for just a card. No R&D for the building of the system, the other hardware, and profit margin.

It appears they are not going with the Polaris chip, more likely Vega, but they get amazing deals for the SoCs in bulk from the manufactures, it was reported that AMD made only small profit margins from the SoCs of the XBONE and PS4.

Given that, I'll say it again, I think this is going to be the XBOX premium for high end consumers with high end TV's, and I'd expect $500+ prices at launch. They are essentially covering all bases and offering multiple spec systems with different consumers in mind, much like the PC market and GPUs. Don't expect Scorpio to sell like hot cakes either I think, the regular XBONE will still be their bread and butter I think.
Just my take on it.

On a side note, the difference in reaction to this announcement and Reggie's statements on the NX over in the NX threads are hilarious. Even Nintendo fans are pissed and not defending him.. I think Sony and Microsoft just put the nails in Nintendo's coffin.

AMD doesn't own foundries anymore, right? So they only sold ms/sony the license and design work for the chips, probably very little profit there.

If MS launches at greater than $399, then they have no intention of changing the momentum the PS4 (and probably already at that time released Neo) has garnered.

Maybe to be more clear, if Microsoft launches without a sku at $399 then you should consider the scorpio as truly only for the enthusiast crowd with little to no long-term impact on worldwide sales going forward.

I'm hoping for a trade in program for $399 Scorpio. I don't see how Scorpio is going to be $399 without MS eating huge losses.

So I just saw a video by IGN saying the Xbox One S will have a slightly better gpu/cpu than the OG Xbox One. Is this true? So will games on Xbox One S run similar now to PS4?

Elite contoller is closer to £120

My guess would be the Scorpio being $499, If its over that I just cannot see it getting the sales MS would be looking for.

Wouldn't be surprised if devs will start techniques like Quantum Break to reconstruct
a 4k image i think that will be the silver bullet for console 4k.
Just like foveated rendering will probably be the silver bullet for VR gaming.

Not true. IGN should really take it down. The S console has HDR components for improved lighting etc, but they run the same games at the same performance.

this focus on native 4k is weird to me. i mean they probably know what theyre doing since they keep talking about premium this premium that but if phil is so focused on 4k why not go the extra mile and make the gpu even beefier than 6tf ?
