this focus on native 4k is weird to me. i mean they probably know what theyre doing since they keep talking about premium this premium that but if phil is so focused on 4k why not go the extra mile and make the gpu even beefier than 6tf ?

Who said the GPU will be 6tf at release? Its probably the baseline minimum they comfortably targeting in PR.

Its to get people hyped up. General consumer, regular gamers. Will see this as future proof console for many years. Lot of people have started to upgrade to 4K TV since the price are going down, by next holiday, it will be even more affordable.

I think its perfect messaging, but definitely misleading to some extent. and doesn't go with Phil's being honest with consumer philosophy. Its not going to be that powerful which will handle crazy 4k gaming. But it will get the job done.

I still think Sony is going to have even harder time messaging their box now.

4k at 30fps could easily be done on a 6tf system and that is without taking a cpu into consideration. Moving to 60fps at 4k is where things will get dicey big time. It takes a hell of a lot of power to hit 60fps at 4k. Being a closed console there may be some situations where 4k/60fps will be happening. I have a strong feeling that Forza 7 will be a 4k showcase title and no way they are going to run it anything other than 60fps.

Spoke with two fairly high up people at Microsoft, and it's looking like an AMD Zen. One even said it flat out. Only reason I'm not quoting them outright, or saying who is cause I don't think they want me to.
Zen is the right choice.

Jaguar is too weak to support a 1.8TF GPU, nevermind 6TF.

The reality is these GPUs are locked down (outside of last minute tweaks) a long time in advance.

Two examples:

1, VGleaks Orbis/PS4 spec leak in June 2012 (18 months before release). Spot on specs with detail.

2, PS3 specs in high detail at E3 2005 (12 months before stated/planned release but released 19 months later in the end)

They prob said 6TF gpu to see what neo is... So they can move up if needed.

With all the leaks about Neo and that there are Neo dev kits out, I think they pretty much knew what the Neo had as far as TF performance. I think the 6TF is what they feel based on talking with Devs is what they need at a minimum. If they are using a Zeb CPU that could raise the overall system TF performance. Specs will need to be finalized by the end of the year so they can do testing and then production.in order to hit a October/November 2017 launch. A lot can change in that time frame however.

Xbox One GPU went from 800 mhz to 852mhz, the CPU went from 1.6ghz to 1.75ghz in the final 6 months.

I think they've learned their lesson with 360 to have a little leeway with the thermal envelope.

I think there is more of a chance that the final teraflop number are a tiny bit higher than a flat 6 teraflop. It's probably something like 6.32 due trying to hit a sweet spot between perf and thermals. If the sweet spot is a a flat 6 then it'll be a huge coincidence.

I can't help but feel a little smug about all this news because of a thread I made last November....

Would anyone be surprised by a new XBOX in 2017/2018 ?

I mean, I'm not sure if it's apparent now but I was 90% positive that a 2017 Xbox One replacement was happening , 100% sure we'd have a new system by 2018. This was months before the PS4K rumors likely pushed microsoft to announce the new device early but still.

It's just interesting to look back on it now , especially given the "worlds fastest game console" is actually a line being touted.

I believed in you!

Is it safe to assume that the Scorpio will be Microsoft's new flagship at some point, with exclusive games that'll work only for it?

My Brother-in law is going to be pissed since he just got an XBone at Christmas. I'm fairly certain Sony will go back to AMD and and request the to inspect the chipset MS is getting and AMD will obviously capitulate since they don't want Sony to take it's business to Nvidia.

Marketing. "look how big my willy is"

Average Joe doesn't know what a flop is, but knows what resolution is (or think they do) and bigger is better.

Question for the techs

Will 1400p comfortably scale on a 4K TV? Cause I'm expecting AAA to choose bells and whistles over 4K

I'd wager it's way too late. Contracts for manufacturing, components, R&D costs etc...
4.5TF is plenty to look forward too, don't be down hearted.

edit
and request the to inspect the chipset MS is getting

I missed this part (was reading on my phone)

My feel similar to this. I even feel like Phil really believes the console will be strong enough to do 4k good enough at least for a lot of games I am sure. This is really the best thing they can do is try to make the console sound capable of next gen gaming while trying to make the neo sound like just a slight upgrade

I... I can't even.
AMD will let Sony inspect MS's chipset because otherwise Sony will threaten to leave to Nvidia?
Are Sony and AMD little children here?

Lol that would be a huge violation of contract allowing MS to sue the bejeezus out of AMD.

You're obviously joking right?

Because nVidia has x86-64 CPUs and APUs, amirite?

Why would Sony bite the hands that feed them?

Switching to Nvidia at this point would be a disastrous 180 in terms of R&D and restr... Oh why even bother lol

That's the only thing that makes sense anyhow

Pairing an r9 390 equivalent gpu with that jaguar cpu is beyond stupid

I think they announced it too early, in over one year from now everything could change and they could even go bigger than 6TF, also will 6TF really be enough to run 4K games at stable 30fps? especially next year games, i mean my GTX 980 overclocked is already about 6TF and pared with my i7 4770k is not able to run smoothly heavy games in 4k...guess we will see. I'd have rathered them to use that power to increase game details and overall graphics at 1080p/60fps, to me this 4k thing will only slow-down gaming graphics evolution, in order to push 4k resolution they won't be able to improve that much things like textures quality, physics and effects

But what if MS buys AMD in retaliation and puts the new Neo down?? You haven't thought it through methinks.

Despite everything they are saying, at some point they'd have to. I just can't see their "no one left behind" message to hold true throughout the entire lifetime of the Scorpio.

Wtf.... lol

I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't bought AMD, but it obviously wouldn't pass regulatory scrutiny.

They do have an iron clad contract that (dates back to 2001 1st gen Xbox) to buy Nvidia first if it ever tried to sell itself.

I'm not surpriced instead, Microsoft is more focused on software than hardware, of course they have Xbox, Surface and Windows Phone(even though those are not certain anymore) but they remain mainly focused on software, like the Xbox play anywhere things suggest, buying a GPU/CPU company isn't what they'd do, last time they bought a hardware producer that was Nokia Lumia and we saw how it ended, they rather spend on software companies like they did with Skype, Mojang, Linkedin etc

WHAT? So many things wrong with that statement.

It's too late for sony to review the chipset for anything at this point. Not that AMD would allow them to, it doesn't exactly work like that.

No way in hell Sony is switching to Nvidia. It would potentially break compatibility with the games coded to the metal on PS4 vanilla and Nvidia has screwed over everyone they worked with in the console biz. They charged a lot of money for a somewhat inferior GPU in PS3. Sony isn't desperate for an off the shelf part this time around.

If I recall, MS has an option to buy AMD if they are in danger of going under or selling to a competitor. or something to that affect. Yeah I think they had a contract similar with Nvidia.

Nobody in the right mind will buy into a competition with Nvidia and mfing Intel. That is a death wish.

Regulators will just stand aside and laugh at the eventual write-off.
