Xbox Scorpio Making "Amazing Progress," - Phil Spencer

They need to show more differences that are not just bumping the resolution for 4K. But I don't know how much dev going to do a very considerable task of putting an option for 4k and another option for 1080p with more effects, physics or (in the name of satan) 60fps.

Man some people are going to lose their god damn minds once Scorpio comes out and doesn't suck and is powerful and costs $400.

"B-b-b-but it was supposed to be a $500 piece of vapor ware!".

It will be fun too to see Scorpio win every single DF faceoff. Grassgate in RDR2 will be a sight to behold.

Will it be as fun as seeing PS4 winning every single DF faceoff for the last several years though?

Guys I'm not a fanboy. I have always had PS and Xbox and always will.

But $399 is a pipe dream. They keep saying premium over and over and won't talk price because they are obviously taking a chance here.

Read carefully. It's all there.

They can offer a $400 standard SKU they make a loss on and more expensive $500-600+ SKUs with some combination of a hybrid SSHD drive, pack-in game code and an elite controller with much better margins.

If I was running the show that's what I would do.

Stop. Just stop.

1) Nobody thinks Scorpio is vaporware or is going to suck or won't be powerful. Literally nobody.

2) 499 is crazy. It will be 399 because more would be market suicide if your sales are tens of millions behind your main competitor.

3) If you think it's fun to watch your console of choice 'win', there's something seriously wrong with how you think about games.

Grow the hell up.

is it not odd to compare another console refresh to the scorpio? It seems like a substantial upgrade to where you traditionally might frame it as a new console for a new generation, the only difference being that its backwards/forwards compatible with the og xbox one. I mean it might as well be the xbox 2, but the idea of everything being seperated is maybe an old way of thinking. They could just be trying to make a family of products, kind of like how they said the the windows 10 is the last one, but they will always improve and update it.

whatever, great to hear they are making good progress regardless. This whole concept is clearly very new, so very interested in seeing how it pans out.

I think they are intentionally being coy about the differences at 1080p, as they are trying not to rock the boat on Xbox One S sales. Ones it is closer to release, I'm sure we will see all the evidence of how Scorpio improves over the One on 1080P tvs.

What does everyone think the price will be?

I think $599

It won't be $399. He keeps saying premium to start damage control on the price.

My guess is that scorpio will replace the current premium xbox one slot so $449 with a game and the s line will get a price cut creating a similar price gap to what sony is doing with the Pro.

I wonder if the PS4 Pro, having been out a year, will be able to have an absolute fire sale when this comes out, to try and keep up with the momentum.

I think PS4 PRO will be similar in performance to the XBOX Scorpio like the XBOX ONE was to the original PS4. A bit more powerfull (+36% vs +46 %) but the 1 year advantage and the smaller price could even that. If they can connect the PRO to the PS VR (better resolution on PRO) with good VR games (maybe Star Wars Battlefront Rogue One could be one) they could take the wind out of Microsoft's sails. XBOX exclusive titles will be very good on Scorpio but the multiplatform games will be made to run on PS4 PRO/PS4 with the same fps and on 1080p there will be only a minor difference in visual quality I think.

Code:
I made a preliminary calculation of peak flops (single precision floating point instructions per seconds).
I know there is no released specification of the Scorpio but could be near hit based on the 6TFlops claim by Microsoft.

(I've calculated the XBOX Scorpio performance with 1.9GHz 8 core Excavator (or Zen) CPU part (243,2 GFlops) and 56CU unit GPGPU with 850MHz (6092,8 GFlops))

XBOX ONE vs PS4 = 1 422,2 GFlops vs 1 945,6 GFlops = x1,37 (+36,80%)

PS4 PRO vs XBOX Scorpio = 4 332,3 GFlops vs 6 336,0 GFlops = x1,46 (+46,25%)

It's way too early for your stupid console wars.

They also probably don't want to reveal their pricing strategy to their competitor(s). And since the Scorpio hasn't been officially unveiled yet, why would price have been confirmed at this point?

Perhaps the most significant spec upgrade for Scorpio that can make a material difference in games however you're not including - 12GB vs 8 (at least according to the most substantiated rumours at this point). That's a significant difference, and even if you figure MS would reserve a whopping 4GB for the OS, that's 8 for games vs 5.5 for the Pro.

I'm extremely skeptical of the cores being Zen though, everything AMD has said so far indicates this is highly unlikely. Expect a warmed-over Jaguar.

I just want to SEE THE DIFFERENCE in the games. Something like the difference of original Skyrim to the new Skyrim remaster. If you have an original Xbox One, you get Fallout 4. If you have Xbox Scorpio, you get Fallout 4 Remaster... I don't nessesarily need a higher resolution... I want more eye candy.

When looking at the PS4 Pro reviel, I was disappointed when they were showing that cool zombie game (forget the name) and they "turned on" the PS4 Pro graphics... I could not see much of a difference.

I'm sure I've seen at least one gaffer label Scorpio as vapourware. The jury is still out on whether they were nuts or didn't know what the word means but it's definitely happened.

ehh I think it's gonna be 600$, but I also thought the same of the PSNeo. I honestly wouldn't mind it as long as the upgrade is really huge upgrade

The way MS is talking about Scorpio and the fact they waited a year before release I feel like one will definitely see a difference. If anything they would probably cut all connections to the Xbox One but that would be brand suicide and the promise of forward compatibility has already been made.

Will be pretty interesting to see how everything plays out in the end. 😄

Did Phil answer the question that it's actually 3TFs?! /s

I think the UK price CANNOT be more than £450 with a game or two. And even then that's pushing it. Sadly, with Brexit, I can't hope for better prices anymore.

Anyone else think this is releasing between October 23, 2016 – November 21, 2017? ;)

Fix the UI, please. The rest is cool and all, but ffs, the UI.

I noticed after a updating to the latest preview, that Xbox UI is zipping through every page and menu. Opening up apps are near instant, everything feels noticably faster.

I was about to tweet Xbox team about it and I noticed Phil Spencer actually tweeted that nav speed has been a focus for the latest update:

This post, and many of the other posts in this thread are sad console war fodder. I'm really not looking forward to another year of it.

I guess this is the result of pent-up frustration since November 2013.

Also, in response to the Phil's tweet: congratulations, Microsoft, for making amazing progress on Scorpio. I have no doubt it will ship next holiday
at a $400 price point
.

I just find all the concern over Scorpio to be puzzling at best and mildly annoying at worst. The console is a real thing. They announced it at E3 and their intention is to make it a really powerful console.
Don't worry, they're wrong.
Thinking Microsoft will touch the $499 price again even with a 10-foot long pole 😂😂.

It won't be 500 - they will try to keep it in line with the pro.

I'm sure they want 400, the question is if they can hit 400. Having "true" 4K (whatever that means in the end) and support for Oculus VR needs hardware power.

$499 is my guess. That's the number I'm working with and will budget for if I decide to get it. Anything lower than that is a bonus for me. Anything more than that and I'm out, at launch anyways.

These pro and Scorpio games won't have anything more than some of features, so don't expect the world.

I for one expect that a premium console has a premium price. If it has a mass market compatible price, it's not a "premium" console in the first place, just the next best thing $400 can get you in fall 2017.

So, I actually hope that is costs $499 - and that it's worth every penny (especially in comparison with day 1 XBOX Ones).

It's going to be $399. By the time Scorpio comes out Xbone might be $249 or less, so of course it'll have a "premium" price over the current Xbox.

This is like a progress report on nothing lol..but I guess it's interesting enough to make an article of.

Either way I think Scorpio should hit the $399 margin. Logic says that multiple console owners increase as the gen goes on due to console prices dropping, so a premium Xbox, especially towards the tail end of the gen is already a smaller market IMO. Getting the entry price level low is very important. I think $500 only moves a couple million units to mostly existing Xbox owners.

And I'll keep reiterating, MS should have something that looks a bit better than Sony's WWS stuff like Horizon and God of War. If the games are too close graphically or you need a DF comparison to highlight the benefits, I don't think the more powerful marketing strategy will translate much to sales or at least not moving people out of their ecosystems. Halo 6 & Forza graphically need to show up God of War & GTS. I think it will just sell to Xbox owners otherwise, maybe that's enough of a boost though.

Yep. Like what kind of Ram (and amount) and what price point will it be in a yr. (Along with every other component)

First they need to pick the right hardware to able to do what they want and then look to the market and try to predict what the costs will be in 1 yr.

Sometime you get it right and sometimes not. See Sony's choice of Ram vs Microsoft's.

It's coming out next year - parts will become cheaper. No way is this thing launching at $500.

I would definitely bite at $500. What about you guys?

Depends on the games. I'm not opposed to paying $500 for a console, but I want to know that it's worth it in terms of performance improvements for my library. There are quite a few games that struggle to hit their FPS targets that I would expect to automagically run better on Scorpio so hopefully they don't lock out the extra hardware power for older games.

Yep, $499 max.

This.

But I still think am hopeful MS will make it $449.99 (eating $50) to counter potential the Ps4 Pro price drop.

I think it's better to do it at launch vs scrambling 6months after release to have game giveaway promos and etc.

They didn't turn on Pro graphics, it was already running on Pro. They turned on HDR, which you can't see over a youtube stream

just give me the ability to play games at 1080p/60fps and i will give you my not so premium salary, for your premium console.

LOL he's selling hope and dream and xbox fans put their faith into it.

I simply cant wait for this 'dream' machine where its capable of
'native 4k'
'perfect backwards compatibility'
'extremely popular at the rest of the world'
'amazing japanese support'
and 'very cheap'

thats the least of it.

It'd be glorious during reveal either way.

Edit: please quote me on this. Either I'd be eating the biggest crow in the world or reborn as a prophet. Hahha

When they ever promised the bolded?
