XBSX2 PS2 Emulator is awesome on the Xbox Series S | MVG

Currently Retroarch's Dolphin core is the only way to play. No Stand alone Dolphin on Xbox yet unfortunately.

Retroarch's core is decent but not anywhere close to being the latest standalone version.
And do I need to jailbreak the S? How do I install? Sorry total new to this. I'm just totally done waiting for the Metroid Prime Switch versions.

No jail break, no need for dev mode either. You can install these emulators on your retail console. You need to go to a certain discord using your consoles edge browser to download a universal windows app.

This is a little outdated but 95% accurate in helping you set up:

The only thing different from the video above is that the website does not host the emulators directly anymore, when you go to the website it only has a link to their discord and the links for the emulators are in their discord. The "retail announcements" channel has the links.

Also, in the setup video above, there are 2 methods to set up directories where you can put in BIOS, ROMS etc. One method requires FTP-ing into your console, the other method is setting up a USB. I will 100% recommend using the USB method as it is safer, quicker and makes it a lot easier for you to hot swap ISO files whenever you want to without needing to touch your consoles internal HDD space.

you go on the discord, there are links which you enter into your Xbox's web browser, and that will then send you to a store page where you can download the emulators

this is the link to the thread I made a while ago, I try to keep the first post as up to date as possible.
the way to get the download links changed a few times recently because some assholes started snitching to Microsoft as soon as a new upload was online, so currently I think it's still available only linked in the discord

The Emulation discord put out this survey about which software/emulator folks want to be ported to Xbox next.

Now's a great time to let them know we'd appreciate a more recent, easier to update, standalone Dolphin.

I was looking for that video where that Sony fan loses his shit watching someone play ps2 games on an Xbox. "But you can't do this on ps5?"

No.

Honestly, this and Retroarch is the best present I could have got this year. Just being able to play my entire Amiga collection on the pad, whilst sunk in the sofa is a god send. Not to mention the rest.

Unreal. Outstanding job from those involved.

that's cool. I sent in CXBX Reloaded as it has Direct X support and is open source, so it should be the easiest Emulator to port other than Dolphin

AND it runs JET SET RADIOOOOOOOOO Future :)

The $250 Series S is probably the best stand-alone emulation machine in the market right now. It's even capable of emulating Xenia.

Curious, is this like jailbreaking and/or do you need to remain offline to play? I haven't done anything by way of this since my PS2 days, so I'm curious haha.

Edit: Found some videos on this. Takes a bit of work, but might try it out.

You don't need to jailbreak or keep offline, the apps are hosted officially as UWP apps you can download from your console.

You just gotta go to this discord link on your consoles Edge browser to get the links under the "Retail" channel.

Download and run them once so they get authenticated to your profile and you're good.

Yea, I was seeing steps with Dev mode and retail mode. So retail sounds preferred? Thanks.

Yeah, I have all of them via retail mode. Some people swear by Dev mode as it gives you more 'flexibility' over how to utilize the console and its storage, but Retail has been working fine for me.

To save yourself a lot of time and headache, look up the very quick guide on how to set up an external storage USB for storing games and stuff. That will save you the precious internal SSD storage and PS2/GC games run 10x faster even on any standard USB 3.0 drive compared to how they were on native hardware

Perfect, thanks for this.

I have downloaded retail version of retroarch from that discord link but i cannot install any cores, they are marked as a dev only version. What to do now?

the cores should already be downloaded, the first thing you should do is download the updates for the front-end within retroarch, that will make it look much more modern.

Follow this, this should help you, skip the first few segments since you've already done that and start from setting up the USB (if you haven't done that).

No, it's still there but hasn't been updated in a while. It's already in a pretty good state with a lot of content.

I think the bigger focus is on Dolphin and Xenia now.

Was this discontinued, haven't heard of any updates.

it is pretty much on par with PC currently in terms of performance and compatibility, so if there's no big breakthrough on PC that can be brought over, it won't get any real updates.

When was the last update?
December 31 if I'm reading github correctly. There's been around 500 pull requests since that were merged into PCSX2 so I wouldn't say its up to date at all.

That said if it is going to be updated it'd make sense to wait until ROV blending is implemented for DX11/12.
