XCOm puts emphasis on storytelling (XCOM interview for RPS)

I see your point, and agree, but when they got my hopes up with the title X-Com and they show this.

I'm disappointed.
They've been pretty forward that this is not that X-com. I remember people being upset with the initial announcement, so it's not like they've been trying to hide what it is. Maybe it will suck, but it's really dumb to completely write off peoples' efforts because it shares a name to something you loved and differs from that.

HOURS OF FUN.

Btw:
Does anyone know if the steam version works with windows 7? Because my windows 95 version won't run anymore on my new computah

I have it via Steam on my Win7

Ok! Thanks everyone, guess I'll rebuy it on steam. Because I really wanna play UFO again.

also:
Arne Niklas Jansson, the guy who does cortex command, made a few cute redesigns for the classic xcom.

I don't know what 2k could've done they want a good metacritic and good sales that often come along with it. How could you make tactical game in 2012 when professionals in the enthusiast press write solid gold like:

Minecraft is a difficult game to categorise. It doesn't follow the typical formula of most modern titles. You can't shoot people in the face in first person, you can't group units together and shoot people in the face in third person, and you can't race a car around a track, win first place, then get out and shoot the spectators in the face.

This game will review well. They have an artstyle and aestethic thats very hot right now because of better products (Mad Men) and they will push some hot button issues (gay character). The gameplay will be at least competent, because it's hard to fuck up FPS in UE3. At E3 there were already some "most improved" comments. What this game needs isn't better game design or XCOM "fanservice". The people who want that are nostalgical fools who just don't get it.
The thing that this game really needs is a episode of Irrational Interviews, in which Ken Levine spins FPS squad commands and a 60s setting as something unique/excepional and game changing, and it'll be a walk in the park to a 90+ Metacritic.

Really? Because most post e3 podcasts have been saying that it's been looking a lot better. I know Giant Bomb and Weekend Confirmed seemed pretty positive about it, or they at least thought it looked neat.

sorry but that's very, very bad for the game.

If your goal was to get me to REALLY WANT to punch my monitor, mission accomplished! Excellent troll, in any case.

edit: I've been here too long. I shouldn't have bitten on this one. Obviously.

An epic, visceral narrative with an innovative branching morality system.

X-COM and Hitman, two of my favorite franchises of all time, raped within the same year. Is there no justice?

How much cynicism and pessimism can people have for a game, for the love of god?

"Suicide pill", "killing the franchise", "the game will be shit". It's not even conversation worthy and some is done by the fucking moderators of this board. It's not constructive. How unacceptable would it be if this same conversation was done in the Uncharted or Halo thread?

I'm not even that interested in the game, but it does look interesting... I don't want to go through a load of bullshit and trolls everytime only to get a coherent discussion about the gameplay elements of the game.

Have you seen the Mass Effect 3 and Halo Anniverasry threads recently?

what? I'm not saying that the game will be shit (looking forward to it actually). I'm saying that if guys from Giant Bomb and Weekend Confirmed like it (well, Weekend Confirmed gets a pass), than it's bad for the game, because these guys tend to like simple, action-oriented games without complexity.

Are you implying that you want this to be the norm? Are you... inviting and supporting such discussions?

So... 10 guys like the game, from the video game press, and it's BAD NEWS for a game? I'm sorry, but I don't get that logic. These guys aren't Armond White.

Anyhow, let's end this now, I said what I wanted to say. Now, let's hope the next thread will be better. A bit.

Nirolak said:
Then why did you make an X-COM game?

First post nailed it.

<3 you, Nirolak!

Also

Every time I see that mock-up screen shot and those chibi-X-Com operatives and aliens I get all bummed out :( They all are so awesome!

Where did I say 10 guys from the press? I said Giant Bomb. Giant Bomb and Weekend Confirmed didn't like Deus Ex HR. I played the build and it's fantastic. That's what any modern reboot should be. And Giant Bomb and Weekend Confirmed didn't like the game. So it seems that they don't like games which don't play themselves. And while I don't care about XCOM series, I care about tactic shooters with complex mechanics. And if Giant Bomb liked it then it's not a good tactic shooter with complex mechanics.

A lot of gamers are sick of seeing their franchises dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. You're tired of the pessimism? I'm tired of seeing potentially great games stripped, streamlined and gutted for the drooling masses.

Yeah, it's pretty funny to listen to those podcasts and how they talk about staying true to a series, then when the series does just that they call it dated and archaic. I guess using your brain is too old school for them.

ahuahuahauha. awesome post

Though I think the first X-Com game was great, I don't have any nostalgia-based attachment to a series that has been mostly bad otherwise. However, I've yet to see anything from XCOM that I would call remotely good. When it comes to cover-based shooters, you know what? I'm good. I've got enough. Some of those have terrible enemy designs too.

These wounds, they will not heal

Fun Fact: X-Com is the only video game in history without a Linkin Park based fanvid.¹

I still have the original X-Com manual. I wish the team behind this new game the best. It's just that... goddamnit.
