XMB-Age: Features and Improvements to make the PS3 just a little bit better

Does this count?

-Shutdown console after all Downloads completed

Yep - definately does. Good idea. One of the reasons Autoshutdown is required is for this. So autoshutdown -> clock/timer/completed downloads

I want to send and accept game invites through the XMB, it's so clunky how it's set up now..and put a mic in the box!

- Please elaborate a bit and I'll add it on the list. How would you like it to be?

I'd like to be able to change the color of the text in the XMB. Lots of themes incorporate white or light colored backgrounds making it really difficult to read the labels on files, etc.

Add custom fonts to themes

- Definitely good ideas...

- Manually adjust screen borders
- Volume control for splash screens

That's all I want :(

- Splash screen volume...(actually volume in general wouldn't be a bad idea)

Also, an "auto-install downloads" setting would be nice.

- Makes sense actually

As some that uses the ps3 and a external hard drive as a video player a hell of a alot:

1. I'd like the whole "press triangle and select display all" with usb devices thing to go away.

2. I'd like the ps3 to remember which video i was watching and it's position longer than it currently does.

3. i'd like to be able to move, rename, and delete files and directories.

- So: 1. Display all by default/2. Yeh, it can be a pain in the ass when watching an episode a day or so/3. Yep, should've been there

Turn off controller after idle for 5 minutes
Shut down system after downloads complete
Sort by title when sorting demos/movies/etc.
When viewing pictures, the ability to zoom out to <100%. I sometime read digital comic books and my TV's overscan cuts off some dialogue near the top of an image.

- How the hell did we forget controller auto-off!! And zoom out < 100% is also a great idea.

beside that, i'd like scroll bars or some indication of where i'm at in a list.

- Yeah, true. Sometimes you don't know where the hell you are with filenames taking so long to load.

All I want updated, is the option to allow me to sort by Name/Title in the Game section. I'm pretty sure, every section other than that one, allows this in folders.:lol

- Hmmm...

- Auto generating thumbnails for videos.
- Text color choice for themes.
- Download all in one basket (videos, themes, pictures, demos, purchased games...).
- Auto shutoff at the end of downloading the que.
- Looparound on lists of games, videos, music...

- Elaborate a bit on the download all thing.
- As for the looparound, while I understand what you're saying, I think it goes against the XMB's design. But yes, it's a pain in the ass...

notifications:

you can only toggle them on/off at the moment .. but i'd like an option to have it turn off during any video playback - including video files on the HDD
Firewire said:
I just want a fast and easy way (right when pressing the Home button) to turn off notifications. With the expanded friends list, people signing in and out becomes a huge distraction and I keep forgetting to turn it off before going into a game.

- Give suggestions on how to implement this in a good manner so I can add it to the list.

Forgot to mention this in my previous post, but I wish there was a way to rearrange games on the XMB. For example, hold Circle over the icon and move it up or down the list as you please.

Users

  • Turn Off System > Options > Auto-Shutdown PS3 (Either at a specific time or with a timer)

Video
  • 'Playlist' functionality similar to the music playlist should be available for videos

Game
  • 'Saved Data Utility' > Options > Copy Multiple
  • 'Memory Card Utility' > Options > Copy Multiple

Quoted for so much damn truth.

Message ignore List
Mark which one on your Friends you want and do not want the notification box to pop up when they send you messages.

I'm so annoyed by spamming invites of games I dont have nor wanting to play.

-Quicker loading of XMB content when PS button is pressed (you know you hate waiting for those little circles to figure out what to display).

-"Folder" style capabilities for organization of music/video/photos/games.

-Better visualizers in music.

-Ability to add files to a playlist while using in-game XMB.

-Dare I say it? 1080i upscaling on all games!

Everything I've seen posted so far are good ideas. One other thing I've heard from another thread, and for the same reasoning, had better happen, or ass beatings are gonna get passed around at Sony. And that's MKV support.

Now that DivX is supporting the container, and the PS3 is an official DivX licensed product (or whatever the terminology is, I haven't had my morning coffee), there's no reason the PS3 can't support this.

I want a universal screen capture function integrated into the OS. Let me plug in a USB keyboard and assign a hotkey. Dump images straight into the photo section on the harddrive. If it causes games to chug momentarily, it would be perfectly understandable and fully acceptable.

This would be a great benefit to online community buzzaballistics.

I'd really like the XMB to 'loop'. It sucks sometimes looking for something (or someone) at the bottom of your friends list, and would be nice to just go up a few times and isntantly go to the bottom of your friends list (or music, photo, video, etc).

For starters, it should have all the features that the PSP XMB has.

There is no reason why the PS3 can't have RSS support and also the radio channel. I love the radio on the PSP but can never use it because A) hardly ever use the PSP around a wifi hotspot B) waste's too much battery C) has crappy speakers.

To add to the automatic shutdown thing - I would like it it could also be set to automatically shut down once all USB-connected controllers are fully charged.

I have confidence that a good amount of these fixes will trickle out alongside more major updates like HOME. I'm hoping that the "Life with Playstation" thing shown at E3 is a part of a firmware update, an XMB app like Folding@Home, and not just a downloadable program that goes in the "games" section."

- Download: Right now, you cant add videos, music, wallpapers, themes to cart. Only demos and purchasable games. And even then, you have to click download on each item in your cart. It would be great to add everything to one cart, then click "download cart" and everything gets queued automatically to one common destination, rather than click through the download, destination, background dl buttons for each item. On days when we get 20-30 pieces of content, it can take forever.

Put me down as another person who would like to be able to change the color of the text in the XMB. Super White works and looks nice with a black background, but any other color and you can't see what's displayed.

How about a calibration/test function for the Sixaxis?

josephdebono said:

Video has a volume control function. Not sure about audio, but it probably does.

Though not XMB related, I desperately want the Flash plugin for the browser to be Flash 9 compatible. I'm running into to more and more things that fail due to ths problem.

Ball is in Adobe's court. Highest version available for licensing is 7.

Type-directories for games/demo's.

Ability to add your own directory-tree and subsequent ability to choose your download / save directory.

What would this be for?

Unless you mean, calibrating the sensitivity?

Testing whether the tilt is functioning properly. Right now you have to go into a game like Rub a Dub to see if it's off.

You can do the category splits by editing the file and assigning a description. I have Demos, Games, Other and Eye Games on mine right now, and then subsorting.

I have

-- (MG Database and Home)
-PSN
PS1
Unknown (where I keep demos)

While we're on the topic of folder structure, I just have:
1. Games
2. Demos
3. PixelJunk
4. Kids

I spent ages trying to think of category names that would sort in that order alphabetically, when I realised all I had to do was include the number at the start.

It's been bugging me forever how when you're watching a video on the PS3, it pauses when the video ends instead of going back to the XMB. Is there a way to change this?

Oh. I wasn't even aware that it could be 'off'

Oh, I would love a screen adjustment thing. I need to use it in every game I play that has it :(

System Settings:
=> Controller Settings
==> Invert L1/L2 & R1/R2

Just incase any crazy developers have 360 as a lead platform, and dosn't know that R1 is the correct 'shooting' button. :-/

Hey thats cool .. didn't know that.

Looks like i'll be editing some files tonight :D

I wish it was fast. I use a keayboard, but I wish I could mass edit, like Mass copy and mass delete.

"Playlist" functionality for music on USB HDDs. Specifically, the ability to play a whole folder's content by pressing the 'start' button, which is already implemented for music copied to the internal hard drive.

Yeah, the second Sixaxis I got was out of wack straight out of the box. It kept leaning to the left or something like that when it was still flat.

Same, and that's even after practically shrinking my TV's overscan to the max.

Yea, my monitor has overscan issues, too. I think I can send it to the manufacturer for a firmware upgrade though which allows you to turn off overscan totally.

Friends

* Message List icon under Friend profile (as it is now, in order to see messages you have to highlight friend and bring up the contextual menu with Triangle)

Game

* Sort games by Name (duh)

:lol I had no idea you could do that and have wanted that as a feature.

Use the in game keyboard for editing info. Any time you type a word with the in game keyboard it gets added to your predictive text dictionary. If you need to edit the same word into multiple files you only need to completely type it once with the in game keyboard, the next time you want to add the same word you only have to type the first letter for the predictive text dictionary to pop up. It learns your behavior too and will suggest words you commonly use over other words and it also detects common phrases you use, for example if I typed "PSN Game" the next time I type "P" it will suggest "PSN" and if I select "PSN" it will suggest "Game".

- Manually adjust screen borders
This is a big deal for me, and probably many others. My TV's overscan is so bad, and even when games come with adjustment for it, my TV overscans more horizontally than vertically, so if I don't want any black bars on the screen, I still have to deal with some horizontal overscan. That and the overscan isn't centered, but slightly to the right. Being able to correct this and fit the whole entire image into my 16:9 screen would be awesome.

Other than that:
-Full Harddrive Installs. I want eliminated load times. I know Blu-rays are big, but my HDD is bigger.

This isn't so much an XMB issue as it is a Sony/PSN issue. I'd like it if the videos that they offer from the store have preset names that don't look like "Killzone2multiplayere3720p". It'd be nice if it said something like "Killzone 2 Multiplayer E3 Trailer".

I'd also like an option to make the first few seconds of a video the default "clip" that you see on the XMB and let me change it if I so desire.

When the videos end it shouldn't just bring up the "||" pause icon. It should just revert back to the XMB.

Also we should be able to have video playlists.

More sorting options would be nice as well.

I don't have too many complaints about the XMB as I've really come to like it over the years.

My three biggest improvements I want have all been stated:

- Automatic Shutdown once all downloads are completed. (With low power mode similar to 360 as well if possible)
- Automatic Shutdown once all USB-connected controllers are fully charged. (With low power mode similar to 360 as well if possible)
- Download Queue Management. (I HATE having to pause everything and then unpause in the order I want to download as the others finish just because I didn't queue things up in the order I wanted originally)

Remove all the options that result in a "YOU MUST QUIT OUT OF THE GAME TO DO THIS" screen. They are worthless and should not be there.

- Keep all the in-game XMB options so that 1) the XMB has a consistent layout regardless of whether you are in-game or not, and 2) so that you can easy quit from your game straight into whatever you want to go to.

I agree, stripping away those might even improve the loading speed of the stuff you actually can use.
