XMB Netflix launching today in Canada, Oct. for U.S.

Hmm, there seems to be more available on the Netflix Canada store than there was this afternoon.

I'm thinking they weren't quite ready for the launch.

I've noticed more and more stuff showing up throughout the day.

Does the current movie being watched show up under your PSN name in your friends list?
I don't think so. I see a few using Netflix and it shows up as "Netflix Streaming Service", unless they are not really watching anything. I'll look up on it more.

You mean people might know that I'm watching Ninja Cheerleaders?
lol...nothing wrong with watching hot cheerleaders, especially the one's in that movie.

Shit sucks for real. I don't use netflix but it is still suck. I didn't have to keep on taking the disc (my brother in law account) to put my Sport Champions disc

The amount of content is really disappointing, but there is enough for me to watch to give it a few months to see if they can work out liscensing issues (Justified, Avatar, the guild, etc..)

But they really need to remove the american content from the search feature, this is going to piss new customers off to no end.

Also I cannot figure out how these titles are ordered, the titles are all over the place this forcing me to use the afformention shitty search tool

I love it. Clearly it doesnt have everything from day one but even today they added a shitload of movies throuyghout the day. For $8 a month I am definitely getting it.

This.

Glad I gave it a try.

By the way does anybody know what the size of average HD movie\tv show on netflix? I am curious how much bandwidth I will end up using.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netflix#Streaming

Netflix streams HD content using Microsoft VC1AP encoding at a bitrate of between 2600kbps and 3800kbps.

That's ~2.23 - 3.26GB for a two hour movie. That's actually less than what I thought, I was under the impression their HD streams were 6Mbit/s.

Lots of people are misinformed because they go by the bitrate info shown by the XMB on the disc version of Netflix. They don't realize that XMB bitrate counter shows buffering too which is what drove the reading to peaks of 6Mbit/s.

I was watching Red Dragon and it kept switching between SD Fullscreen and HD Wisescreen.

wtf?

I wish you can select if you wanted to watch SD or HD on the PS3. Hopefully, they will add this option in the near future.

If you chose to watch in HD at the outset, switching back to SD is usually because insufficient network bandwidth is available to continue the HD stream.
So rather than just stop and wait for bandwidth the become available, it recalculates periodically and adjusts accordingly.

If you chose SD at the start, I have no idea.

no wai,

I was rushing to install this when i got home after work before going to class

I DID NOT NEED TO UPDATE TO 3.50?!?!!?!?!? AAARG!!!!

On a more positive note, I am noticing movies on the site today that I did not see last night on the PS3, hopefully this is the beginning of giving us some comparable content (we will never have the same choice as the US...ever)

I'm mostly interested in the TV shows, but the selection on netflix.ca is pretty weak at the moment. If they beef that up a bit, I might subscribe.

anyone have a workaround to get the app installed on 3.41? im in canada btw...

which firmware does the app require anyways?

Q:What version of PS3 firmware do I need to watch instantly, and how do I update my PS3 firmware?

A:You need firmware revision 2.76 or later. Instructions for updating your PS3 firmware can be found on the PLAYSTATION\®3 website.

This is what sent me into my previous tizzy, but for all I know that is just a copy paste from the American site so 3.5 might be needed

It supposedly requires 3.42. Not sure if it has an SFO that can be modified to look for 3.41 instead of 3.42 or if the app requires you to log into PSN when you launch it.

hey nice find..thats actually my post and i can confirm yes it installs fine but asks for 3.42 upon boot...does anyone know how to modify a .pkg to require a lower firmware (is it like version.txt on psp?)

I was noticing a decent amount of negative comments towards Netflix streaming itt, but then I realized people were talking about only Canada's streaming library. Why would Canada not get the exact same library that the US has from day one? We have so much quality stuff to stream.

I'm not sure if pkg's install SFO's, but if it does, have you tried editing it?

Distribution rights. The people who hold the distribution rights for content in the U.S. aren't necessarily the same people who hold the rights in Canada and the rest of the world. Netflix has to make new agreements with the rights holders in Canada for the same content they already have streaming rights for in the U.S.. It goes both ways too, they have Mad Men available for streaming in Canada, but not in the U.S..

Use the FTP app to transfer the file to your PC. If all pkg's include the file (I'm not sure if they do), it should be under the Netflix install folder and it should be named PARM.SFO.

Well, they have to negotiate with each and every network for broadcast rights outside the US. A lot of shows have exclusive deals with Canadian networks for broadcast -- which are probably now being renegotiated. That's why you even have stuff like Doctor Who on Netflix in the US but not Canada yet -- it's a joint BBC / CBC production, so you'd assume that Canada would carry it, but new broadcast rights have to be drafted up before Netflix can play it in a new territory.

That I don't know :lol

My best guess is that it's somewhere under /dev_hdd0/game/NPUP00030 but I'm probably wrong.

Upload the file to MediaFire and send me a link. I'll give it a shot under Linux and send you a link to the modded file if I'm able to edit it :D

The selection is disappointing because I've heard so many websites and communities claim Netflix would replace the Blockbusters of the world. I've heard numerous stories about the Netflix selection and their algorithms for finding films just for you. I finally get to try it out and I think there ends up being only 250 films (not counting TV Shows) in the PS Netflix library. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the movies that did make the "cut", but I felt overall I was missing out on the real thing. Are there specific dates when Netflix adds new arrivals? I know that Tuesday is the primary release date for most stores does that coincide with Netflix?

When Netflix first launched in the US, there were two big problems with it: lack of content (especially new releases) and what content was there, it was difficult for the consumer to find. The Netflix website instant streaming section is a really poor way of browsing movies because it doesn't list everything that's available.

The first problem was addressed by waiting. A year later, and the instant streaming content in the US is 10x better than what it used to be. As the distribution deals get signed, this will only get better.

The second problem was addressed by third party websites. I use instantwatcher.com, but there are others out there. Check the Netflix recommendation thread to see what else people use. The website lists which movies are newly added (in the US), shows what others are watching, and you can browse by genre. I doubt instantwatcher has a separate database for Canadian titles yet, but when you guys find an equivalent website for Canuckian Netflix, life will be a lot easier.

Also, new content is added almost daily now. When it first started, it was only added every week. It probably all depends on how quickly they can sign the distribution contracts, and they seem to be doing a much better job of it now than when the service first launched.

Sorry I took so long, the dependencies were bigger than I expected and I'm on a really slow connection right now. Tell me if the file I sent you works, I might have mixed up the file with another one I got :lol

Is that necessary here?

I'm seeing more movies now, but truthfully I can't tell if if it just a placeboe effect as I still cannot fathon the listing sequence. At one point I had Heroe's season one and 4 beside each other, season 2 three lines down and season 3 way down.

Do some searches though guys,I noticed Mad men season 2 and 3 on the right but never saw season 1 until I did a search for Mad Men,it`s there,so all those seasons that you only see the 4th or 5th season,do a search...there`s a lot of stuff on there I think so far anyway...got a few corrupted streams near the end though this morning,it was looping and crackling all over the place, had to cancel.

I hope Canuck Netflix will start carrying Burn Notice episodes now that it's on Showcase.

8/month is a fucking bargain. When I secure full time employment and move out, I don't think I'll need Rogers or Bell TV anymore. The fact that it remembers which point you are in a movie, regardless of device, is awesome. Currently enjoying Heavy Metal in slices.
