Spec Ops was could have easily been absolutely unremarkable without the writers. And I don't see them do the same trick twice again.

That would even make less sense. Why would you want a sequel to that?

I hope they don't try the same trick again and instead continue to explore the narrative of Spec Ops, which was really good.

A lot of the writers of Spec Ops left a long, LONG time ago.

Including the leads? It would be a shame if they were gone. I might be one of the few who maintain Spec Ops did not deliver on its narrative potential, but said potential was there in spades and I'd be keen to see the writers try their hand at another narrative.

There is nothing left to explore. It would not make sense to have it take place in the same world. Without the same plot themes the game would feel completely different. And the same plot themes are not suitable at all to be explored again.

Solid shooting that complemented the story and impressive visuals didn't stand out?

The core game mechanics were serviceable and the art direction definitely was good. But if it hadn't been turning the average military shooter on its head, and instead was one, it wouldn't have been anything special and i'm sure people wouldn't still be talking about it.

Really hope they knock out something as good, if not better, as i loved Spec Ops. But i'm inclined to agree it's not sounding likely, if it's true about the writers.

Spec Ops writers don't work for Yager anymore?

I'm talking about the narrative they achieved in Spec Ops, it could be a sci-fi game now, just keep the narrative and explore new ideas.

I didn't find the shooting awful at all. Only issues I had were with the cover.

Agreed, I wasn't a fan of the controls when it came to dodging grenades. And the switch cover option seemed random sometimes depending on very small differences in distance.

Since it seems like the writers aren't there anymore there's no real need to get hyped for the next game. Spec Ops gameplay was alright, I'm certainly higher on it than most, but it was still nothing special. That game was all story and writing.

The worst I've read about the game is that it's a very standard shooter with nothing that really makes it stand out other than the narrative. How is the shooting awful?

The guns look, sound and respond poorly, enemy feedback when shooting is poor, the aiming feels loose.

Walt Williams was a contractor and works for 2K/Take-Two.

The main question there would be who their publisher is.

I see. I hope at least that the writters in the next game follow the kind of work Walt did, working very closely with the programers and designers. Seems like that was part of the key.

I have the absolute opposite opinion. Guns were great, aiming is perfect, and enemy feedback is WONDERFUL. If you shoot them in the legs they go down, shoot them in their weapon/arm they got knocked back, headshot is insta..

Have you ever shot someone in the leg when they're up on a raised platform or beam? They will stumble off, grab on with one hand, dangle, and then aim with one hand and shoot at you. It's great.

Wait, Spec ops writers left the team ? when did that happen ? is there an article documenting that ?

Well one of the lead writers was Greg Kasavin who left long enough ago to help found a new studio and develop/release Bastion.

Poor enemy feedback is a big videogame pet peeve of mine. I'll probably just play it on easy to see the story.

Noooooooooo... play it on at least hard (suicide mission). It's not bad at all.

Solid shooting that complemented the story and impressive visuals didn't stand out?

Thank you, finally someone else who thought that game looked good other than me. I thought the pc version looked really sharp, just wish there was more color contrast, other than sandy colors.

Let's hope they improve the shooting and traversing, they were ok, but no where near as good as let's say new Tomb Raider, Gears, and Max Payne.

Good to know someone else besides me liked other things other than the dark story.

I bet it's great on pc. The PS3 version, digital, is pretty abysmal with loading and late textures.
