Absolutely. But after the way Yahoo "polished" Flickr (and that's just the largest example), I don't bland people for being spooked.
Maybe Marissa plans to handle things differently. There are clear ways to monetize Tumblr based on people's interests, charge for featured posts on user's Dashboards based on demographic criteria, and by making finding relevant content more easily. They could even charge people for the ability to upload high quality GIFs, photos, and videos.

Yahoo gets a lot of visits and they provide advertising for sites. They aren't making Google-type money, but they are making money. I can only see them buying tumblr in order to place ads on related tumblr pages. Not sure it is worth the cash for that gamble.

Is there original porn on tumblr? All I ever see is stuff taken from other websites and reposted... the width and breadth of it is staggering though. The rabbit hole goes deep.
Basically tumblr is best at porn curation (or stealing), as far as I could tell so far. Granted I only really discovered it recently, and I only look at gay porn, so my mileage may vary.

oh yes. and it is glorious. people arent shy about letting their freaky side out on tumblr at all.
Don't tell me they just monetize on premium themes. I know the tumblr people is all into design and silly creativity, but come on.
Also, I'm very tired that my google reverse searches depend on many tumblr pages. It's all samey and it barely contributes any useful information. :/

There is original content on tumblr, and that includes nude/erotic/adult content, but so much of it is reblogged/stolen/reposted without content that it's hard to find where it came from. But there's a lot of good content creators and submission blogs.

I believe you need to charge a setting in your account options to view adult content, same as with Flickr.
I don't know what can they do, since providing the source is always optional. Perhaps a reverse image search engine below the post can solve this issue, and so the lurking begins.
(by the way, it's not like most of google searches come from this silly site).

Oh that's on tumblr? I remember seeing it a couple/ few years ago, but I didn't even know what tumblr was back then. But now that I look back at it, yeah the layout and the way the site worked was definitely a tumblr.

Interesting you mention him, because Tumblr routinely deletes the videos he uploads. They don't bother getting involved with posts containing nudity, and pornographic material gets a pass if it's hosted elsewhere, but they don't want [gay] sex sitting directly on their servers.

Being the 4th most visited website probably helps. Yahoo has always been my homepage for as long as I can remember and will remain such. I like the news on the front page, gives a nice summary of what is on the front pages.
And Yahoo Japan is at 15 ahead of Google Japan.

They still own about 24% of Alibaba. It used to be 40% but they sold back some of it last year for around $3B. Their relationship is somewhat hostile with Alibaba (more from the sense of Alibaba taking a 'deal with it' attitude towards them)

My brother still uses Yahoo mail.
I reckon a lot of folk who used Yahoo as their primary web email back when it was popular have stuck with it. It's not convenient to change your email when you've been using it for years.

the coolest thing is that yahoo wants to drop one billion dollars on this and no one in their marketing research department has told them that the demographic they're trying to reach thinks their brand is toxic.
they have premium themes, you can (or at one point could) pay a few bucks to get a post pinned to the top of your followers' dashboards, and they have sponsored "native" ads that generally consist of .gifs from tv shows or movies or ~artsy~ pictures of products (in other words stuff that sorta matches tumblr's content) on the sidebar of the dashboard.
