I don't agree with much of the review especially the part about the towel boys. I mean just because they aren't traditional pizzas doesn't mean they are bad. Spinich pizza is one of my favorites. Looks like the people who did the review would have a heart attack if they went to the California pizza kitchen.:lol

Edit: Also the best comes from smaller chains or individual restaurants. Those places have more choices and put more care into their pizzas. Pizza hut is still my favorite out of the three they review though. Dominos might come in second with Papa John's last.

Of course Papa John's is the best. Don't need a review site to tell me that.

I had too much Papa John's in college... I can't even look at it these days. I much prefer idependent pizza places over all of these choices.

i really want to try lombardi's in new york.

so, so badly

Quality just has to be incredibly different in other area's of the country for Papa Johns not to be hands down the best of the 3 big delivery chains. The BBQ Bacon Chicken pizza from Papa Johns kicks ass as well.

The guy obviously hates non-traditional toppings/pizza types, which I'm not normally into myself but the BBQ chicken/bacon is great as is Papa Murphy's Gourmet line with the creamy garlic sauce instead of marinara.

edit: to be fair he seems to rank Papa Johns highest overall for quality, but says the Pizza Mia was the best individual pizza they had. I haven't tried it, but people on GAF made it sound pretty gross.

i find it hard to hate any pizza. the only pizza i've ever had that was pretty gross was at my local billy bob's wonderland when i was little. they really, really fucked it up.

Of course.

Down in Cincinnati there's a place called "Dewey's Pizza" that is so good, whenever I go to Cincy I eat there for Lunch and Dinner.

Then, for about a month afterwards, all non-Dewey's pizza tastes awful to me.

go eat at the precinct the next time you're in cincy.

also, because it's pertinent, the winners of america's test kitchen's frozen pizza taste test:

So what did we find out? Frozen pizza is not going to fool anybody into thinking it's fresh. That said, our winning pizza, California Pizza Kitchen Margherita, tastes very good, and several tasters said they'd be happy to have it in their home freezers. In fact, our panel recommends the top four pizzas listed below. As for the remaining pies, they ranged from imperfect (with muted flavors and soggy crusts) to inedible.

Recommended:

1. California Pizza Kitchen Crispy Thin Crust Margherita
12.8 ounces, $5.99
This sauceless pizza had "nice" chunks of fresh tomato that tasters praised for their ability to make it "seem less like frozen pizza." Most tasters agreed that this pizza had a "nice overall combination of flavors."

2. Freschetta Ultra Thin Golden Baked Crispy 5-Cheese Pizza
12.8 ounces, $6.29
This pizza scored especially well for its "thin and flaky," "crispy" crust and "complex" cheese flavor that "actually tastes like real cheese." With a better sauce (this one was "dusty and oregano-y"), this might have been the winner.

3. Tombstone Extra Cheese Original
20.5 ounces, $5.19
Tasters found this pizza met expectations, noting that it "tastes like frozen pizza, in the best possible way." It scored well for its "very good" cheese and "nice and crunchy" crust.

4. Amy's Cheese Pizza
13 ounces, $3.99
This organic product had a distinctive whole-grain crust that one taster said was "full of flavor, like real bread." The sauce was praised for being "tomatoey, with good herb flavor." The cheese was called "just okay."

Ugh, Pizza Mia. I wonder if I'm the only one on earth who hates that shit.
I usually hate Pizza Hut's goofy-ass pizzas (just Pan for me, thanks), but the one special pizza they introduced that I fell in love with was the Twisted Crust Pizza. Am I the only one who loved that? I miss it so much:

that's what I was going to say, frozen pizza tastes great if you aren't into the toppings. particularly vegetables which don't seem nearly as good frozen. That said, I could eat just about any pizza and love it including totino's and jeno's cheapass variety :)

Papa John's new 6-Cheese Tuscan Pizza is pretty awesome. I prefer their stuff to any local pizza place.

Pizza Hut I mostly just like for their Stuffed Crust pizzas, and the Dippin' Strips pizza (when it's available).

Sadly, my area doesn't have a ton of good local pizzas, so I almost always have to go to chains.

I will say, there's nothing better than getting authentic pizza. Whenever I go to New York City, I make sure to stop by Sbarro to get that fresh, New York, homegrown taste.

for the most part, when i want great pizza, i make my own. the local sbarro actually sells dough balls if i don't feel like making it myself, but i make my own sauce that i keep frozen and ready to use, and i'd much rather have direct control of how crisp my crust will turn out than to turn such a thing over to domino's.

in fact, any of you dissatisfied with the state of chain pizzas could double the quality of said pizzas by putting a pizza stone in your oven at ~425F, putting the entire pizza on it for ten minutes as soon as you get it home, and then giving it a taste. the problem with a lot of chain pizzas is that they don't properly make the bottom of the crust crisp for that bottom crunch and soft middle, but you can easily fix it if you put in a little effort.

most people probably don't have them locally but if you are a pizza lover you should try Imo's Pizza. It's St Louis style with very very thin crust and the provel cheese that's really only used in that area. It tastes very "rich" with that cheese. Interesting but quite good.. might just be me though I prefer the thinner style pizza's.

Sometimes local pizza places purposefully try to copy the model of Dominos and create extremely cheap pizza for college students. In those cases the local pizza can be as bad or worse than chains.

I was just coming to extoll the virtues of Metro Espresso in Orlando as one of my favorite pizza joints... and it turns out City Search called it Orlando's best. Great tasting and great price.. can't be beat.

In terms of delivery, we got some Domino's on Super Bowl Sunday and the pizza tracker was pretty amazing, plus it came in no time flat. Major chains though, Pizza Hut can't be beat. I've become a big fan of Giordano's here in Chicago though.

Dude, there's a Sbarro in every major city. That's not real New York pizza :lol

I ordered domino's last night for the first time in about a year, and by god their pizza is terrible. Nothing beats family owned pizza places.

:lol oh man i knew that Sbarros thing had to be a joke but I didn't know the reference. Now I do. Knowing is half the battle.

Depends on where you live.

As for the OP, I agree Papa Johns is the best. And, unlike in the review, Papa John's has the same pricing as Dominoes/Pizza Hut around here. In fact, there is often a carry out special for a large pepperoni for only $5.99. The same pizza at pizza hut is $9.99.

I hate when people garnish with full basil leaves.. totally poncy.

The problem with Papa John's is the high degree of variance in quality depending on where you live. At least Pizza Hut and Domino's are consistent in their mediocrity; Papa John's is either great or terrible, and if you end up close to a bad one there's not much you can do about it.

I had to give up on Papa John's for years when the location nearby went to utter shit; after moving to a different suburb of Portland last year it's all we ever get, and there's some pretty damn good independents around here, too.

One time I bite into my pizza at a local pizza place called "Mikey's" and found a screw.

Still a good slice of pizza though.
I used to work in a pizza place and this dumb girl who had a huge crush on me was shooting staples at me in an attempt to get my attention.

We got like four calls complaining about staples in their pizzas.

yeah, agreed. why not put on julienned basil instead, as in the lombardi's pizza? it's not a deal-breaker or anything though. that pizza still looks bomb ass.

Sbarro, from what I can remember, DID have good pizza though.

Better than Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, and Dominoes.
