Yahoo's Tumblr cracks down on porn

But nudie pictures will be almost impossible to find unless you already have a well-curated RSS feed or bookmark folder of Tumblr porn from now on. NSFW and adult content won't appear in search engine results (like Google or Yahoo or Bing) or Tumblr's tracked-tag searches.

No... just.. wait a minute.. please.... no... God no.

I thought tumblr was all mentally ill fangirls, social justice warriors and one or two artists..

Had no idea about the porn.

She seems a bit of a Jesus-freak in her personal life (if that "God, family and Yahoo—in that order" interview is to be taken at face value). Sadly, in many cases it tends to spill over on the business side. Since Tumblr has become somewhat of a haven for alt-porn, it would make them a target for a misguided moral crusader's attention.

Hopefully, it causes the collapse of Tumblr's userbase, leading to Yahoo's BoD booting her out (it cost them 1 billion to buy Tumblr's userbase, since, let's be honest, it wasn't an image-hosting script they wanted for that money).

Ok, so I look at porn just like any sexualized individual in modern history.

If something like a cyberglomerate(that's my term you better source it) deciding to scale down their porn endeavours somehow shifts your world or world views. You might be an addict.

Its just free virtual titties, dicks and cum culminations that your fighting for.

Take that energy and change the world instead. Maybe you'll change the world into a place where porn isn't seen as an obscenity and anyone can view it at their leisure without being outcasted for being a deviant.

Isn't that a world we should strive for, one where some can seek pleasure for themselves without harming others?

Who the hell is using google searches to find porn on tumblr?

Everyone?

Try to search for any porn related term on Google, chances are one (or probably several) of the results on the first page are Tumblr links.

Unless this new policy has already taken effect, and I guess you need safe search turned off in your Google settings.

roflol. Iz yu srkestik?

Honestly now, is that sarcasm? Everyone knows you can't turn off low-level safe search in Google's engine anymore.

I'm serious. What do you think made Tumblr so popular? New traffic and users discovering it through Google.

I don't know what you're talking about. And I am NOT referring to Google image search, but the main web search.

It doesn't matter, there's only one filter for both engines. I've just typed "Sasha Grey" (minus quotes) in regular linksearch and all 50 results on the first page were bullshit articles and social links about her. No hot beef injection. Both linksearch and imgsearch are censored by the same unremovable low-level filter.

That's a person's name! And she's not even a porn star. What the hell did you expect? I said search for "porn related terms"...(perhaps I should have said "porn specific")

I just tried "natural boobs" (without quotes), which is something I never searched for (being gay) but just cause someone mentioned it earlier in the thread, and the second result was a Tumblr.

Like I said, every porn specific search I've done on Google in recent months returned Tumblr results.

Google's filter has changed to prevent unintended porn results. But if you make your intention clear, Google will happily serve it to you on a silver platter.

I don't know her, I just read the blurbs under the search results and nothing mentioned porn. Even if she's a porn star, it's still a person's and everything I said hold true. You just need to be more specific in your search.

RUFLEL. Srsly, ruflel.

The second result in Yahoo's own linksearch is [NSFW]
"Sasha Grey Nude Anal Porn Videos - Hot Free Sex Movies :: Pornhub"
[/NSFW] (first being her homepage). I'd say that makes her (former) profession relatively obvious.

Just to show the difference between forcibly censored (Google) and uncensored (Yahoo, at least for now) search.

And people still can't see the difference between them. Shake. My. Head.

I shake my head back at you sir.

Who said anything about comparing Yahoo search to Google search? And who said or implied that there is no difference? Are you moving the goal posts?

You asked who uses Google to search for porn, I said "Everyone" (meaning the majority of people on the internet, since Google is the dominant search engine).

I'm personally almost always against censorship (producing porn/erotica is my passion), and I make commentary about it on the internet every chance I get. But in this case I have no issue with Google's filtering, it serves a worthy cause of preventing inadvertent porn results turning up for people who did not intend to look for it. And it has not prevented me from finding what I want. I would not use Yahoo search if they paid me to.

I think some people are reading into this wrong. As far as I understand, they're not removing the porn from Tumblr, they're just censoring the search results on Bing and Google. Or am I wrong?

People searched? Generally it goes.

There you go. For 99.9% of people the first tumblr porn site they find is through search. Take that away and you're effectively preventing new people from discovering it.

I'd say this hurts site owners more than viewers. The people who make, upload, and curate the porn will lose a large chunk of traffic from new visitors that would have discovered tumblr porn through search.

Sasha Grey?

ah she's a nobody. Just the porn industry's most successful and infamous star in well over a decade.

Got famous enough in porn that goddamn Stephen Sodenbergh did a film with her about the issue itself.

It's still just a person's name, which could easily be shared by other people or things.

Search for "Sasha Grey naked" (or add any other porn specific word after her name) and Google will give you the porn.

I'm fine with Google not serving porn or nudity unless you're clear with your intent, instead of returning porn for every other word in the directory like it used to.

And I'm not a Google apologetic or fanboy. In fact I am very critical of them for not allowing nudity on YouTube and Google+

I just want consenting adults to be able to share and view what they want, and hiding it from minors and adults who don't want to see it.

That's like saying that searching for Jeremy Clarkson or Alan Sugar wont bring up the actual person, because it's just a name.

If you search Sasha Grey, you get the pornstar - because she's the most famous Sasha Grey out there, I guess.

but who gives a shit anyhow. If you're searching for her, it won't be on Google anyway! It'd be on Bing videos!

Does she mean their own search function? Because that's crap anyway.

Can't you just use google to search porn and put 'tumblr' behind every search.

Not that I have tried it but it's what I've heard.

Yeah, I don't get it because I just checked and their own search function still works perfectly fine.

Maybe it's just any search from googles that are related to porn going to their site?

People will find their porn, they always do.

The news here is that Yahoo purchased a site that has like 80% of it's traffic dedicated to porn and immediately tries to reduce the porn content. That doesn't seem like a smart business move.

Personally I had no idea that Tumbler was so popular because of the porn.

On the other hand, where does that 80% percentage come from? Based on fact or just one of those fake factoids that make the porn industry so much bigger than it really is? (I always laugh when I read that the porn industry determined the outcome of the VHS war, or that the porn industry is bigger than Hollywood)

I found out about tumblr porn when the Amazing Atheist said he preferred it

But isent it just pictures and gifs? Why not just use any of the millions of YouTube inspired porn sites? What was the appeal?

It's easier to focus your imagination on an image/gif, videos are all over the place and the poor cinematography is distracting.

Puritanical fucks. Anyone who thinks this is the worst Yahoo will do to Tumblr now that they've got their claws in it is naive.
