Yakuza 3 impressions from real Yakuza &#12

there are Nigerian scammers in Yakuza 3 or does he mean in Japan now?

The Tokyo neighbourhood this game is based on IRL is full of massage parlours & stuff that have African guys out on the street hounding you to go in. (I have no idea how they get visas).

Title change to add the Japanese translation. :lol

Oh GAF and it's Sega hate.

Jake Adelstein is a pretty great writer. I loved Tokyo Vice. This article was fantastic.

Oh come on, it's not reserved to Tokyo. Osaka's Americamura is full of these same guys

RGG 4's story is much better than 3.

RGG4 takes RGG3's story and shits on it. Several times.

Yes, Y4 is confirmed for the West and Sega promised no cuts this time.
Erm....no, they only said that hostess clubs will be in the game. Answer x Answer won't make it already and mahjong and other boardgames are still up in the air.

He was asking about the Yakuza guy's quote about Kabukicho. And besides, Amemura's different, those are just guys posing as rappers to get chicks.

That is a great idea for an article.

Seems awfully short, though. Feels like an excerpt only. I mean, at least one of the three played through the game, right? There should be a lot of unused material.

I wish I could watch them playing the game and see how they interact with it. :D
It seems like the general atmosphere of the game is spot on, but I never thought about Kiryu's shirt. He should technically be dressing more smartly, yea.

Article formatting and everything is great. This is great games journalism. This is the kind of stuff we need. :)

Damn, that looks so familiar. :lol

My wife and I went to a yakuza-run bar with a couple ex-pats in the heart of Kabukicho on a Saturday night after going to the Giants game and hitting up Barbacoa and the Baird Taphouse in Harajuku. Very interesting experience.

did you need to fight off random thugs and yakuza?

I'm happy to hear that the game seems to be pretty authentic. Although I feel weird saying this since I had a blast with it and even if it weren't authentic it shouldn't affect my enjoyment of the game.

damn... I dont even like being recognized as nigerian anymore... biggest scammers in the world

Damn it!

<----Nigerian.

ditto

...well, not to the not liking being recognized as nigerian, but the reputation we've kinda gotten due to a few scammers.

The "I dislike stereotypes" line starts behind the drunken Irishman, the Italian gangster, and the lazy African-American.

M: Kiryu is the way yakuza used to be. We kept the streets clean. People liked us. We didn't bother ordinary citizens. We respected our bosses. Now, guys like that only exist in video games.
= :_- (

And I guess the Women Japanese Yakuza Cops walk around with Hello Kitty all over their gun. "HERRO KITTY!" *BANG BANG*

Him saying that Sega USA sucks is lol.

Which made no sense, considering they left it all in with Y2.

The hostess parts involved translating long dialogue trees, so I can understand cutting them out to save time/costs. The mahjong not so much though, not sure why they axed that.

Y3 should've been the end of mainline trilogy. The "REAL" ending was perfect.. but no... they had to give us an alternate ending after the credit roll so the selfish gits could milk the cow to death. Fuck Sega.. there, I said it.

Damn, Y3 is never going to live down those cuts, is it?

The stupid part is that only people with severe OCD will ever finish everything that's in there after the cuts. I know people just don't like the idea of them, but there's already more content in Y3 than is healthy for any person to finish.

That's all well and good unless the "something" that they cut is something you like.

Glad to see you value a random gaffer's opinion on Yakuza 3 more than mine, Himu. SADFACE.

M: I like the fact that you power up by eating real food. Shio ramen gives you a lot of power — CC Lemon, not as much. It all makes sense.
S: The breaded pork cutlet bento box is like mega power. More than ramen. That's accurate.
K: If they had shabu (crystal meth) as a power-up item, that would be realistic. It's a yakuza game.
:lol :lol :lol

Like what, though? I mean if you liked the hostesses, they were still in the game, you got to go on their dates and do their side missions. The only thing missing was the not so fun text guessing game you had to slog through to get there.

Is mahjong really a deal breaker? There are tons of ways to play that outside this game (like just firing up your copy of Yakuza 2), and tons and tons of other minigames left in for you to spend time at (billiards, darts, bowling, the arcade, fighting arena, fishing, golf, VR fight sim etc.).

I can understand disagreeing with them on principle, but I just can't take people who get all dramatic about the cuts too seriously. They're pretty minimal in the grand scheme of things.

EDIT: I should add, the western version has one killer feature that makes it the best one - the awesome translation. The Japanese dialogue in this series is often heavy with generic dorama cliches, and in general is much milder than the over the top curse-filled Tarantino style writing you get in the English version. That adds a lot of character to the series imo, Kenzan just wasn't the same without it.

its not a few... when the country has a music video glorifying the scammers you know its more than a few...

What if you like chatting the hostesses up? What if you like playing mahjong? What if you like the little side missions and you want to see all of them, including one that continued from Yakuza 1 and 2? What if next time someone makes a cut, it's something you happen to care about? It's a half-ass localization. I understand why they did it, but I don't have to like it. Didn't like it then, don't like it now, and I certainly hope they never take such idiotic shortcuts due to internal politics ever again.

I'd deal, because at the end of the day there's so much content here that the game's not dependent on any one or two or even three or four side-things. Because really, all this stuff is ancillary to the main game anyway. Like I said, I can understand not liking the cuts, I'm not defending it, but acting like it's the end of the world or not buying the game over it seems like an overreaction to me.
