NO

>Is it a girl?

A girl?

>Well when orphans get to be a certain age they must all embark on their quest in which they hunt a virginal female in Tuvalu

God, this game is so good. I'm really surprised at how well written it is. Watching the kids is so sweet and heartwarming. I'm really impressed by how human they made Kazuma, and I love just spending time with these characters. I mean Mitsuo explaining to Riona that he's got a permanent tan? That's so...it's so cute. The children are all so mature. I really feel like they are my family. I don't think this is boring or slow at all.

I also like Shenmue and the slow parts of Heavy Rain. I have explosion fatigue, and these usually build to good things.

The kids being so human and charming gives me a real reason as Kazuma to give a shit. At least that's how I see it.

Oh, I like Shenmue too, but... damn, I dreaded the orphanage stuff in Yakuza 3. It feels out of place. I really don't want to be looking after a bunch of kids, learning about their bully issues and chasing dogs for them. Yakuza and Yakuza 2 still have the best stories, IMO.

The orphanage stuff was good and gave Kazuma his reasons. But it was a boring chore with the quests. Could've just used a couple more cutscenes instead :P

And yeah, the plotline and character build-ups in Yakuza 2 are so much better.

But still, love all 3 games. Can not wait for the western version of:

I loved the orphanage stuff too. I actually wish there was more of it, because I have alot easier time taking seriously that portion of the story and characters than alot of the cheesy, over the top stuff that follows.

I started playing this for the first time a week ago and I agree with him. I like the silly orphanage stuff precisely because it's so breezy and low-impact. Makes for a good contrast with the rest of the game.

I enjoyed it a lot as well. I thought that it made the game's world and characters more realistic. I thought that Yakuza 3 was a lot closer to Shenmue than the first two games. And that's somethingt that I loved about it.

The cutscenes are also really well directed. The Tojo Clan discussion is really great. Hamazaki is extremely well acted. His smirk after Majima's comment was awesome. He was the only one who changed his facial expression at all.

Just beat this game tonight and loved it. Imo, there were some very emotional and powerful scenes in this game. Looking forward to going through it again and getting Yakuza 4.

While the orphanage stuff dragged on a little long, I also enjoyed it. It really grounded the character and made everything that followed more real. The problem with sequels that always have the same protagonist is it gets a little ridiculous how he literally keeps getting pulled in over and over and over again. Having the break at the orphanage really worked for the story, as it broke up that cycle for Kazuma. It helped round out his character, and thus the entire world.

i'm playing nothing but this game at the moment, shit's started kicking off.

the orphanage was fun but it did test my patience a bit. like, when you go buy dog food for a dog and then have to get a stuffed toy from home, that's just the developers fucking with you!

i like the writing and cutscenes in this but i wish they'd had the budget to finish them :/ it's kind of jarring when it goes from being a movie into a final fantasy text dialogue and then a movie again for seemingly no reason

Such a good read. More reviews should be this good.

Best part:
S: I don't know any ex-yakuza running orphanages.
K: There was one a few years ago. A good guy.
M: You sure it wasn't just a tax shelter?
K: Sure it was a tax shelter but he ran it like a legitimate thing. You know.

I need to get around to playing this, it's gotten lost among my backlog.

Rikiya is SO GREAT :lol

I loved his scene at the Red Brick motel (and the scene director's obvious input in the battle with
Kanda, lol anal sex
), and then him going shopping and coming out with so many bags :lol

This portion of Yakuza 3 has been brought to you by Don Quixote. That's right, Don Quixote, the official store of Yakuza getting the munchies at any time of day or night. :D

Actually, what I love about the Don Quixote stuff is that it seems like their sponsorship is coming from just one store in the chain. :) All the Sega signs go up over that one store, and in this game, Rikiya makes a big deal about that location being special since it's open 24 hours. Gives the game even more of a down-home neighborly feel.

The translation is also really superb. The dialog is incredibly readable and the characters all speak with distinct personalities and dictions. There are tons of idiomatic phrases used seamlessly and, despite the story's complexity, explain things in a real enticing simplicity. This is a very intriguing plotline but it's all written very invitingly.

I'm blown away by this game. Fantastic title.

Oh Y2Kev, your impressions mirrored my own. I really enjoyed it until the latter stages of the game.
CIA & Black Monday nonsense lulz

Until then, your heart strings will be tugged!

I have to wonder. Is this your first RgG game?

Thinking about renting this and skipping Y1 and Y2... Don't really care about the missing features, I'll live. How long is the average playthrough?

Depends entirely on how much you get involved with the side stuff. Anywhere from 15 hours to 50 is a fair estimate.

I'll probably end up doing side stuff, but I sure as hell won't 100% it. Should have a gay time playing this beauty!
Okay, you'll probably end up spending about 25 hours on it then. Most people who are at least interested in side content but not obsessed with it usually spend around that amount of time.

Perfect. Now I just have to find a way to send Super Mario Galaxy back to GameFly without crying...

The good thing about the sidestuff in Y3 is, that you can't miss anything (aside from different quest outcomes).
I didn't know this and was trying to do most of the optional stuff when it becomes available or I would search the city randomly for new quests even though I wanted to continue with the story sometimes, kinda OCD.
But you can just do as much sidestuff as you like. There will be a newgame+ mode and even better: an adventure mode that offers all the sidestuff w/o the main plot. You can even change the time of day, your companion and you can import your savegame after you finished the game to just continue with your current progress of side missions.
Furthermore, even if you fail the task of a quest it still counts as "finished" (though I guess you would want to succeed in them for different rewards or dialog).

Thanks to Segata and others, the game is great. I have no experience of Yakuza before playing Yakuza 3 and i was able to pick up the gist of Kiryu Kazama and his world. So for others on the fence dont worry, go ahead and dive straight in, the game comes with summeries of previous games.

I agree for those saying its the closest thing we have to Shenmue, its true. Another great touch is the variety and diversity in each mission.

The bowling in this game is sooo good. My date keeps beating me, will fook her up if she keeps it up.

Im playing on normal, is it possible to switch to hard midway? Im guessing the depth of the fighting system will become more apparent the more i progress.

I randomly decided to start another playthrough of Yakuza 3 a few days ago after speeding through it in March. My goal this time was to actually do side quests, and try and experience Yakuza 3 rather than just race from point A to point B. Holy shit. I liked the game a lot before, but you really can't appreciate Y3 properly until you actually devote some time to exploration. There's an ungodly amount of stuff to do, and it's actually fun. The orphanage bits are still a little slow (not that I particularly mind them), but it really didn't bother me when I was taking the time to find skulls to crack and bitches to procure.

I never got to play Shenmue, so this game will be my Shenmue. Without the heartbreak. And multiple sequels.

As someone who did a significant portion of the translation of part 2 I have to take offense. :lol

The Yakuza 1 localization is apparently famously bad.

I finished it! I give it a 10/10! The story stuff with
the CIA and Black Monday
became stupid but the relationships between Kazuma, his kids, Rikiya and Mikio, and Daigo were really solid and saved it.

Kazuma is such a cool character. He's definitely one of my favorite video game leads. He's the opposite of BADASS TO BE BADASS. He is very human without being too realistic. It makes him seem aspirational while being somewhat supernatural.

Very happy with the game, and glad Sega did bring it over with a high quality translation so I could enjoy it.

edit: I didn't play Yakuza 2, so no comment on your job there. :)

I don't remember having any issues with the Yakuza 2 translation. Just a couple hours into Yakuza 1 and I'm already running into a bunch of unexplained and untranslated Japanese lingo being thrown around almost as much as the unnecessary cursing. I half expected a "Translator's note: Oyabun means godfather" message at some point.

As for Yakuza 3's writing...
I am so sick of Kazuma kicking the crap out of a boss and leaving a gun or knife about a foot away from the boss so the moment Kazuma's back is turned, the boss can attack the person Kazuma (i.e, the player) has been working so hard to protect. Usually someone else dives in and stops the boss at the last second so there's no real harm done from that stupid cliche, but in Yakuza 3 a perfectly good character dies because Kazuma's a fucking idiot.

Other than that, really good game, as usual. Still like Yakuza 2's story a lot more, and I'm pretty sure I'll prefer Yakuza 1's story too if I can survive the translation.

Just spent the last hour trying to find the last keys. So now all I need is the one you find later on in Okinawa. When my son leaves on monday I am going to find the last master.

I haven't played Yakuza 3 in a few months but I think I might go back and try to get the Platinum Trophy (I usually don't do that but I want an excuse to play the game again). Does anyone have a good way to get a hat trick in darts ?

My PS3 is dead! I was about to finish Yakuza 3 (start of chapter 11).
Now I need to buy a new PS3, but I don't want to start Yakuza 3 from the beginning. Is there anybody who has a save file from around chapter 10 or 11?

p.s. I have the PAL version of Yakuza 3.
TIA!

I've heard a lot about how bad it is, but playing it myself at the moment it's quite decent and not bad at all, including the voice acting as well. I think only untranslated words like aniki and oyabun was kinda getting used to and surprised why it didn't get translated but I guess they wanted to keep the authentic meaning behind it or something :lol I think it just pales in comparison to the Japanese VA with well known stars who do an excellent work.

And yes....I've started playing Yakuza 1 a few days ago to start the story from scratch. I have Yakuza 2, 3 (Japanese version) and Kenzan as well. I wanted to start with the ps3 games but it was worth it to start with the original in the end. The story is so exciting and I recognise some faces from Yakuza 3, Kazuki and Yuya, I think those were also in the Yakuza 3 demo including their same host club and I think Fuma was also there on the phone? Man, I shouldn't know all that yet! So far, I'm in chapter 4 of the first Yakuza and am excited to play more of it.

However, I've noticed that Yakuza 1 is very much like Yakuza 3, 4 and even Kenzan judging by the demos. It hasn't changed much throughout those games, it looks prettier so far. It's so surprising to see the Japanese audience being excited for every new Yakuza game even though they're very similar. But I'm not complaining, the story is strong here, gameplay is fine and they're better than many games out there.

I just got a
Royal Joker Card and Lopsider Cigarette from the coin lockers... Haven't played the games they're used for yet, but do you use these items once or is it permanent?
