Yggdra Union PSP - September 16

Huge week? What else is coming that week?

This looks interesting, though, glad to see them making such a high quality port

You called? :)

Atlus U.S.A., Inc., today announced Yggdra Union, a card-based strategy RPG for the PlayStation®Portable system (PSP). For years, strategy RPG fans have accepted repetitive, non-interactive battle sequences as the genre standard; few games have dared to break the mold. Yggdra Union blows through, shattering the mold into tiny, unrecognizable bits. One reviewer wrote of the game’s ground-breaking mechanics, “It's no easy feat to invigorate a genre that has remained fairly set in its ways for the last few generations, let alone do it with the imagination and energy present here.”* Experience a fresh mix of turn-based strategy and real-time action, constantly engaging the player and providing intense, riveting gameplay combined with tactical card-based combat.

Originally released for Game Boy Advance to warm praise, Yggdra Union is beautifully remade and loaded with enhancements, including fully remastered audio and visuals (featuring the artwork of famed character designer and manga artist Satoko Kiyuzuki), fully-voiced dialogue in both Japanese and English, a widescreen aspect ratio, additional difficulty settings, new unlockable content, and more… all exclusive to the PSP® system!

Yggdra Union is currently scheduled for release on September 16.

Key Features
• Break-the-mold strategy system – Turn-based strategy meets real-time action in this innovative battle mechanic! Build your strongest deck of cards to rain down special attacks, monitor the aggression meter to adjust the power of each hit, and create troop unions that will overwhelm the enemy’s numbers.
• Rebuilt for the PSP® – Yggdra Union is brand new again on the PSP® system, boasting remastered audio and visuals, new playable characters, additional missions, difficulty options, widescreen support, and dual English and Japanese voiceover tracks.
• Unlock even greater rewards – There is more to Yggdra Union than can be revealed in a single game. With 3 different endings plus a hidden ending and secret characters, there’s tons of treasure for a true gamer to uncover.

Yggdra Union has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

Still have yet to play my GBA cart... not sure if I'd be willing to double dip, I didn't for Riviera (but then again I didn't care much for the GBA Riviera).

Don't have my list handy, but off the top of my head...Dragon Quest IV, Bionic Commando, Star Wars: Force Unleashed, etc.

Huge for me at least :P

I was not sure if I should get this, on the one hand it comes with Ethelred's endorsement and I love the art style but on the other hand I already have a number of unfinished SRPGs on PSP (what's with that system and the genre?).

But with this:

and my sworn mission to support dual audio releases on all systems (I don't think I've missed a single one so far) I have no excuse.

I'll stick with the GBA version, it looks better (more charming, at least) in low-resolution but at least they made the effort to redraw the graphics this time and not apply a pudding filter to them ala Riviera PSP.

this is gonna be a very rough september... definitely need to pick this up, and get riviera while i'm at it.

Anyone recommend this for a SRPG lover? I never played the original GBA version, and I want to know how someone would rate it in comparison to games like FFT:WotL and Jeanne.

lol, the same DS fanboys that jizzed over TWEWY's style have the gall to call this game's art hideous? For shame. Game looks awesome.
Hey, I jizzed over TWEWY and I jizz all over this as well! I'm an equal opportunity jizzer.

GBA's best SRPG finally hits the PSP... Which makes it PSP's best SRPG now :D
Is this better than Jeanne D'arc? I found Jeanne a bit more refreshing than FFT:TWOTL.

EDIT: And Disgaea: AOD

The true question is whether it's better than WA:XF if it wants to take the "best PSP SRPG" title.

I don't care for nomura-zipper'd TWEWY art either.

I wonder why they have to make their eyes so huge. It's kinda creepy.

The gameplay better be as good as you say, kiryogi bear!

XF? Really? I would have given it a chance it wasn't so horrendously reviewed...

Indeed. The way I see it really, WA:XF and Yggdra are the kings. WA:XF wins on the traditional side, while Yggdra dominates for being original and different.

Tales of Vesperia was on that day at one point, but that date hasn't been officially announced yet, so it still may be.

Tales of Vesperia and Dragon Quest 4 in the same day... Best day of the year!

It looks interesting but I don't know, I didn't like Riviera and this is by the same devs.
Suppose it depends on why you didn't like Riviera. I suppose there are a good number of similarities particularly on the visual side, but they're pretty different types of games.

I have a feeling I will double-dip when/if I get around to a PSP, though by that time it will be out of print. Looks purty.

Actually it is, and I'm glad this is getting a localised release. They really redrew EVERYTHING to take advantage of the PSP's higher resolution. Hot hot hot.

you know atlus is making such a big fuss (complete with nonsensical trailers) over the smallest game they release that i can't tell anymore which one are supposed to be the good one

I gave you hints, I really did. Go back and look at the last couple Faithful communiques and look at the first letters of some of the words in the final paragraphs. Oh well.
Looking at the end of the June 3rd (Dokapon Kingdom) e-mail:

You're gonna get devilish rivalies, Atlus Faithful, and you'll probably lose a friend or two.
And the May 23rd (Etrian Odyssey II Mega Contest) e-mail:

What's that? Expecting another game announcement? You're getting greedy, dear readers! All we ask is a little patience...
Clever! :lol

holy shit! i cant believe that this actually coming out for psp in the US.

day one!
You couldn't? I saw this a mile away personally.

However, I'm not too interested in this port up, since I already have the GBA cart.

Once again confirms the 14-week rule, that Atlus USA no longer announces games for US release more than 14 weeks in advance. I think their last ten games have fallen with 12-14 weeks, if I'm not mistaken.

Hmmm.... If Persona 4 is not announced by the time Yggdra PSP comes out, no US release this year. Any hidden messages? :D

If I didn't have the GBA one already, I'd definitely pick up the PSP one. The battle system is such a refreshing change to the old SRPG mechanic (which I still love) that it makes it worth having when you're sick of playing all the other SRPGs.

Also, I love the art. I think it's charming.
